With the help of the head of the Bielefeld City Archives, Dr. Jochen
Rath, ID card applications >from the Bielefeld district Gadderbaum were
recently discovered there, among them also the application forms of 14
Jews. Gadderbaum is the home of the famous hospital Bethel, which has
always had specialized departments for the residential care of mentally
handicapped patients. It provides them with activities and productive
work they are able to do in spite of their limitations. The hospital is
closely associated with the Protestant (Lutheran) church.

In the History of the institution it says (in German) for September 5, 1940:

"The institution receives a letter >from the Minister for the Interior
with the request to prepare the Jewish residential patients for a
transfer into another institution. Bethel informs their families and
asks them to take them home. There are 13 Jewish inmates. Six are taken
home by their families, seven are taken into a collecting camp in
Wunstorf and >from there to the Euthanasia Institution."

The seven deported patients ended up in the the former prison in
Brandenburg/Havel, where >from January to October 1940 about 9000
patients >from various institution were murdered. Subsequently, the mass
murders in these institutions were stopped in response to protests >from
the churches and family members, who had started to realize what was
going on in the midst of Germany, but small-scale euthanasia in some
mental institutions continued. All the other later extermination camps
were situated on Polish territory or further East. These murders did not
provoke any protests in Germany. The seven Jewish patients were the only
ones taken >from Bethel. The English-language Wikipedia says about the
Brandenburg/Havel institution:

(There the) "Nazis killed people with mental diseases, including
children. They called this action "T4" because of the Berlin address
Tiergartenstraße 4, the HQ of this planned and well-organized killing
"Euthanasia" organization. Brandenburg an der Havel was one of the very
first locations in the Third Reich where the Nazis experimented with
killing their victims by gas. Here they prepared the mass killings in
Auschwitz and other devastation camps."

The application forms in the size = A4 ( similar to 8 1/2 x 11) for the
Bielefeld district of Gadderbaum, which in the forties was still an
independent administrative community, number several hundreds, among
them 14 Jews whose forms are marked by "Jude" in red handwriting.

Of these 14 names, exactly seven are listed in the German Memorial Book
as having been murdered in Brandenburg/Havel on September 27, 1940, most
of the others, who - as the Bethel history says - were taken home by
their relatives, were later deported with the regular transports >from
their home towns.

The application forms contain all the usual data, a passport photograph
and finger prints. "Aryan" applicants for the ID cards had to hand in
four photographs (after 1942 only three), one for the original ID Card,
one for the application form and three for the "doubles", i.e.
light-brownish light copies meant for archive purposes, one of which was
sent to the local police headquarters. One of the three doubles of Jews
was sent to the "Reichsstelle für Sippenforschung" in Berlin, later
called "Reichssippenamt", which was in charge of determining whether somebody
was of of "Aryan" or "Jewish" descent, if there was any doubt about it.

On the forms there is one line with the question "Jude: ja - nein".
Being Jewish was determined by the "Nuremberg laws" and also applied to
citizens who had long been baptized, but had Jewish parents or grandparents.

Wiesbaden in Hesse Nassau.

A search of my personal archives turned up a 2001 email message from
Joseph FALK, born in Wallau, who was a friend of my late father and uncle.
(Ernst and Hans Lowenstein o umlaut) in Wallau.

The letter was sent by Joseph FALK's daughter Loretta nee FALK who
married Arthur HELMAN and was living in Toronto in 2001.

Arthur and Loretta HELMAN had three sons, names not known.
The youngest HELMAN son was a doctor in Toronto in 2001.
The oldest HELMAN son was living in Australia with his wife and two
children in 2001.
The middle son "has his own web side (sic) company", probably in
Toronto as of 2001.

We are seeking contact information for any of the HELMAN family and for
Joseph FALK if he is still living in Toronto.

It will help me and be useful in our archives if a kind member could
remind us how to look up telephone numbers in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

I am trying to locate a family that traveled >from New York/Newark through the
Panama Canal and wound up in Los Angeles. The travel took place sometime between
1927 and 1929. I have reviewed the "California Passenger and Crew Lists 1893-1957"
online for all ports of California arrival during that time without any success.
I have also reviewed the microfilm index for "California Passenger and Crew Lists
1893-1957." Also nothing.

The only other option I can imagine is going through the manifests for all ships
that arrived in Southern California ports for 1927-1929, quite a task.

Does anyone know if there is a list of ships (either online or in a book) that

lists their permanent residence as Rostov na Donu; it lists Rostov na
Donu as a city where they were during the war, it says they perished,
they are on a "List of the Persecuted," the original language of the
document is in Russian (though I read an English translation), and
under the category of "Related Item" it says "List of murdered people

from Rostov na Donu, 1942-1943."

My FRUTKO family is >from Lithuania; one branch moved to Riga. FRUTKO
is an unusual name and I suspect Grigori FRUTKO was a relative. Does
anyone know if there is more information about those killed >from or in
Rostov na Donu or where I should look?

Elinor graduated there in 29 and her sister 3-4 years later,
but the Dalton School have no yearbooks for 1929 or later. Eleanore
doctorated >from Columbia University in Psycology.
Barbara and Eleanores parents were Dr. Israel Carl GRUSHLAW and Isabella
(FEINBERG) GRUSHLAW.
If anyone have pictures of them or have an idea where I should seek to find
pictures and pnformation please tell me.
