You don't mention about how your descent is Jewish.
Someone is only Jewish if they have maternal Jewish descent i.e. your mother's mother's mother etc. was Jewish. Otherwise you may have Jewish blood, but not actually be Jewish. Surnames often help show if someone was Jewish, but not always. As one example, someone with a Jewish mother but a non-Jewish father might have a non-Jewish name (or the reverse). Aside from that names were sometimes misspelled or Anglicized to fit in better with society. Miriam Deutscher

The Denenberg my mother's side of the family. They all originated from Biaylstok and immigrated to the USA. Except for one who bastardized his way around Europe and has left our family with a legacy of newly discovered Sophia Sherman

I've also seen such inscriptions on a few tombstones I translated on JewishGen's Viewmate. Yitschok Margareten

Need help locating orphanage records from the ISRAEL ORPHAN ASYLUM

My mother was an orphan as an infant in the Israel Orphan Asylum in Manhattan per the 1930 census. I had requested her records from the JCCA, but nothing was found. Is there any other place I can look? I would like intake information. She was also in another orphanage in Manhattan when she was a bit older before being placed in foster care. She doesn't remember the name.

Dear Yale- I have also sent my trees to cousins, printed out and mailed, and I maintain a list of interested parties for each branch. Updated trees were sent in .pdf but I doubt that a single one of those got printed as each is over 100 pages, including my source copies of original documents. I will leave a printed copy of each tree with each of my children (though no one has asked 😢.) Reba Harris Solomon, New York

My story the same. The family arrived in 1856 in NY departing from Hamburg. Both manifests found after months of searching on a family unit of parents and 4 children. Found using ages and many variations of given names. The surname in what was then Kosmin, Krotoszyn County (kreis), Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland was LEVY or a variation of that. The family sailed out of Hamburg as LAPSAK and arrived in NYC as LAPSER. By the 1860 NYC census it was back to LEVI/LEVY. The surname they sailed under is extremely rare. Back in the 1970s when I went on line to see if others had an idea why, no one knew. If anyone now has an idea, please share David Brener, Lancaster County, PA

FamilySearch Update: I have been following up on the suggestion to put my trees in Family Search‘s special Archival area. As far as I can determine, this area is called IGI-International Genealogical Index. In the past, it accepted LDS and other family trees for archiving. It has NOT ACCEPTED NEW TREES since 2010 when the entire index was assembled and became part of Legacy’s collections.

I am also using FamilyTreeMkaker and regularly make an Outline Descendant report on paper. But there is a possibility to add or create new fields on the report. With the facts windows. I have not done it yet with the 2017 version, but on older versions it worked properly.

The records that have been uploaded to jewishgen, certainly to JRI-PL, have usually been rudimetarily translated by poeple working for the archives. They are not in depth and names are sometimes not recognized correctly because the translators often are not familiar with Yiddish names. There are jewishgen volunteers who take on the task to go deeper into the record, and the results are uploaded. However, there could be errors at both levels. I have a situation like this with the name of a paternal great aunt, who is listed as Caim, but who was actually Chaia. The fact that this changes the sex of the person listed could have confusing ramifications to a researcher. Luckily, I know the history of this lady. This information was relayed to the moderator for the town for correction. I suggest this is the best solution.

One matseva in the cemetery in Jodłowa, Poland (southeast of Tarnów) bears in small Hebrew letters the inscribed name and town of the stonecutter, H. Hojfmeister, Tarnow. He is listed in the Tarnów business directory of that time period (approximately 1930). It can be seen in the attached photo.

I have a number of family members buried in a cemetery in Hungary and several of them had the stone cutter's name at the bottom of the stone. These were from the early to mid 1800s.

External CD/DVD drives for laptops and desktops remain an option. Plus most desktops still have 5.25” bays, plus SATA power and data connectors, so internal drives are easily added.
If the day arrives when you need to move to a system without these options, then it’s time to copy data to some other medium.
Meanwhile, I would certainly want long-lived storage that I can retain (several copies) and easily distribute additional copies, that does not heavily depend on “the kindness of strangers”. Neither magnetic nor “flash” media are reliable enough for the long haul.
Archival paper -- printed with toner rather than ink – is another option, but it isn’t reliably machine-readable. I have used OCR for both English and Russian text. The output has ALWAYS needed careful proofing and correction.

A new initiative: Coalition of Guardians of Jewish Cemeteries in Poland was announced by Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland. It includes a map with all the Jewish cemeteries located in Poland. Each cemetery has its own subpage where one can check who looks after the place. https://cmentarzezydowskie.org/
Note: I am taking the word of “all” from their website. I was not able to find my ancestral towns’ cemeteries listed.
