Unfortunately, Temple Street Synagogue was built over when Victoria Street was
built to connect Bristol with the new station at Temple Meads. I know of no records earlier than those of the Park Row synagogue, in the 1850's. These include the burial of a Sarah BALLON buried 17 Jan 1849 in the Jewish community Burial Ground at St Phillips. She died on 14 January 1849, and her Hebrew name is given as Sarah bat Avraham Avinu (Sarah, daughter of Abraham our father), which is the term usually used for a convert. Tony Reese tony.reese@...

Hidden Children in France - found after the Holocaust
I am looking for people that were hidden children in France during the Holocaust and were found after the war by an English woman named Evelyn FREEDMAN (now Evelyn CHENKIN) and returned to their family or to Jewish organisations. Between 1946-48 Evelyn, who was working at the London Beth Din, was sent from England to France to find and retrieve Jewish hidden children. Thesechildren, like many other Jewish children, had been placed in convents or with Catholic families for safekeeping during World War Two. Some however, were now being refused return to their family or to the Jewish organisations that had placed them there. Some of the names of people that I am looking for are: Henri GABES Lily SAMUELS (possibly now lives in Australia) Bernard KOHN I have been documenting Evelyn's story for some years now. Her book, "Gathering the Remnants" details her journey in France over those two years. If anyone has any leads as to where these people are now or knows of a similar story of someone who was a hidden child in France and was discovered after the war by an English woman, please contact me. There were 60 children on Evelyn's list. Many thanks, Miriam Hechtman Sydney, Australia miriamhechtman@... skype: miriamhechtman

Philpot Street Synagogue
#unitedkingdom
Myra & Peter Waddell <mpwaddell@...>
I have been told that my maternal grandparents - Henoch/Hyman/Henry and
Ester Osner/Ouzner were members of one of the Philpot Street Synagogues at the beginning of the 20th century. They were Sephardic Jews. I was wondering whether there is such a thing as a list of the membership of either or both at that time and, if so, what other information might be with the names. My grandpa also had two brothers, Yossel/Joseph (married to Sarah) and Yankel/Jacob married to Reyzla (this latter couple is believed to have changed their name to Posner. They also lived nearby and might have attended the same Shul. Is there anyone who might have access to such a list? Myra Waddell (Adelaide, South Australia) GOLDENBERG, SAMUELS, Romania. France - Paris. England - London and Liverpool. BORKOVSKY/BORKOWSKY, Poland - Kolno, Lomza Gubernia. Siberia - Irkutsk. France. England - London and Liverpool. OUZNER, OSNER, POSNER, Romania - Khotin. England - London. POSNER also America. BORZIANSKY, Ukraine - Kamenets-Podolskiy and Winnitza.

Finding death certificate in NJ
#general
Mjn519@...
How does one find someone who may have died in New Jersey?
Received word >from NY Dept of Health this week that they have no record of my gggrandfather's death in all of New York. So now I am looking at nearby states, starting with New Jersey first. I only have his name and time frame of years (1900-1907). Looking online, the New Jersey Dept of Health and Senior Services requires city or county of death, also the year. I have no idea. I would like to look at the whole state (like they do in New York). Is there a way to get around having to provide the above information but just the name and time frame? Thank you. ~Marie Lubman Chino Hills, CA Reserching: AUGUST, ADELSON, ZACHER, GUTERMAN, GREENSTONE, FISCHER, LUBMAN, RIVIN

Seeking Albert SIEGEL
#general
Sharon R. Korn <s.r.korn@...>
I am seeking Albert SIEGEL or information about him. This is a common name,
but the person I am looking for was listed in the 1954 obituary of Juanita PIERS SIMMONS as a cousin living in Miami, Florida. I believe his mother's maiden name was Anna KORN SIEGEL. Please respond privately. Thank you. Sharon Block Korn San Diego, CA

Eliyahu FEINBERG from Vilna (Boston, New Haven, Bronx)
#general
MandJMeyers <mandjmeyers@...>
My great-grandmother Feiga (nee FINBERG) LANDSMAN came >from the Vilna area,
and possibly Podberezhe (Paberze) before that. When her husband Abram died, she emigrated to Boston to be with her children. So far, I have not found any of her FINBERG relatives. Feiga's father was Eliyahu FINBERG and a census search shows only 3 Elihu FEINBERG in the country, so one (or more) of those may be related. Elihu Feinberg #1: 1930 census in New Haven, CT, parents Samuel and Sadie, siblings Alfred, Jack and Belle, father born in Lithuania, Elihu was 11 in1930 and born in CT. Elihu Feinberg #2: 1930 census in the Bronx, NY, parents Michael and Emma, siblings Rose, Minerva and Dorothy, father born in Lituania, Elihu was 23 in 1930 and born in NY. 1920 census in the Bronx shows other children though hard to read (Julia and 2 others) Elihu Feinberg #3: 1930 census in the Dorchester section of Boston, MA, wife Ida, children David and Pauline, Elihu was 32 in 1930 and was born in NY. If any of this is familiar, please contact me privately at <MandJMeyers@...> Marty Meyers Montclair, NJ

Help with Possible Passport Number

Michael Knox <deputydog232@...>
I would like to extend my sincere appreciation and thanks to all
the "JewishGenners" who responded to my request for assistance with attempting to determine what the information on a passenger manifest from 1932 "really" meant. The responses were thoughtful and extremely informative. I plan on using them to map out my next avenue of investigation in this wonderful hobby called Genealogy!! I have participated in JewishGen almost since it began. This venue of collective reasoning and thinking is truly awesome and I continue to marvel at it's value and the co-operative spirit of the participants. Again......thanks for all the assistance! I'm sorry, but your assumption re cabin class passenger names missing >from manifests is another genealogical myth which has joined the myth of "names changed at Ellis Island". The topic was completely covered on the JewishGen Discussion Group in December and January. Looking for Ester nee KOENIGSBUCH in the USA 1926

Abuwasta Abuwasta
Dear Genners and Siggers,
I need a lucky strike. I recently received a copy of the 1926 French naturalization application of the brother of my maternal ggrandmother, Aron KOENIGSBUCH. In his application he had to name his siblings, their ages and the place of their residence. One of the siblings he mentioned was Ester whose age he quoted 62 (I know from the LDS documents that she was actually born in 1866 inBrzesko nearby Krakow ). The new detail which he disclosed is that she lived in "America". I presume that she was married. I looked at EIDB for any Ester born in Krakow or Brzesko bertween 1864-6 and came only with one possibility of Ester Ataslander (Atteslander) who came with 2 boys in 1906. I understand >from a family tree in ancestry.com that her maiden name was Landau. I am trying to contact the person who prepared the family tree and also some other ATTESLANDERs in the USA and Canada in order to verify whether Landau is based on solid documentation or some logical deduction or lore.If this path is blocked I am stuck with Ester XXXXX born in 1864/6 who reached the USA but not via Ellis Island or not in the years covered by the EIDB. Any suggestions how to continue excluding the ATTESLANDER route. Thanks. Jacob Rosen Amman, Jordan

Google Books - Jahrbuch für jüdische Geschichte und Literatur 1906

Geoff Kaiser <geoff.kaiser@...>
Fellow researchers,
I recently did a GoogleBook search using the terms "Unruhstadt and Jewish". Unruhstadt is small town, now Kargowa in Poland where many of my ancestors originated. One of the results was "Jahrbuch für jüdische Geschichte und Literatur 1906". When I did a search within this book for "Josef Kaiser", my great grandfather, it came up with two hits - supposedly on pages 20 and 34. My problem is that this book is written in German and I can not locate the reference to Josef Kaiser on those pages. Perhaps someone that is fluent in german can have a look for me and help me with this problem. The following link will take you to the book. http://www.compactmemory.de/index_p.aspx?tzpid=5&ID_0=5&ID_1=126&ID_2=3231&ID_3=12559 Many thanks Geoff Kaiser Melbourne - Australia MODERATOR'S NOTE: Please respond privately.
