German - need translation of hand written document #general

Barry E Chernick

ViewMate still seems to be down. I sent this message at the beginning of
this month but my mailing lists have not been working until this week so
I do not know if this made it to the list. So here it is again.
I received a copy of a hand written document >from the Leo Baeck Institute
of Jerusalem. I would like to get a translation. I was told it was
written in "old" German, I do not know what that means. There are four
pages. I have posted the first page at
http://tinyurl.com/ckhqmb .
If you can help please let me know. I can post the other pages or email them.

Manifest address continued #general

Barbara Zimmer

Dear Genners:
In all immigration records, any of the data is only as good as the
person who provided it, and/or the person who wrote it down for the
immigrant.

If I see a name on a manifest listed as the destination as a cousin,
aunt or uncle and I have never heard ot that person before, I can use
this new name as the jumping-off place into a hitherto unknown branch
of my family, or I may be misled by that name into fruitless research.

Just this week I found a possible relative (born in Canada) who
entered the US in 1942 and stated the name of her cousin in New York.
I had never heard of this cousin before --- but until I find out
whether the Canadian woman is a relative of mine, I hesitate to
ignore that "cousin's" name. In this case both the questioner and
the respondent spoke English, so there would be no confusion about
the data. In earlier cases for my own family, I have been able to
confirm relationships by using the manifest data and have been misled
on several other occasions.

....Gladys said, "IMHO, trying to trace someone listed as the
destination on a manifest as a cousin, uncle, aunt, or i-law may not be the most
constructive use of one's research time, especially when no one in the family has
ever heard of that person or any family member by such name."

Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Galician Programming - IAJGS Conference - August 2009 #ukraine

Pamela Weisberger <pweisberger@...>

Gesher Galicia will be holding our half-day of SIG activities at the
IAJGS conference in Philadelphia this year on Monday, August 3rd.

Our special luncheon and program speaker will be Michael Karpin,
an award-winning filmmaker, television and radio news reporter and
anchor in Israel for more than thirty years.

He will discuss his new book, "Tightrope: Six Centuries of a Galician
Jewish Dynasty," at the Gesher Galicia luncheon:

"Tightrope," is a 650-year epic tale of the extraordinary Backenroth
family, which follows them over six centuries of upheaval, covering
their migration >from western to eastern Europe, the creation of the
Hasidic movement, the birth of Zionism, migration to South America,
the oil boom in Galicia and the loss of many family members during
the Holocaust. It is a stirring, true story, based on diaries, letters,
documents, and oral testimony. The Backenroths were residents of Drohobych,
Schodnica, Boryslaw, Bolechow and other Galician shtetls. Time and time
again they slid >from prosperity and opulence to profound poverty and
distress, and time after time they managed to surmount the crises.

Karpin will also speak on the following topic later that day:

"Writing a Galician Jewish Saga: Research & Methodology"

Karpin spent twenty years researching "Tightrope: Six Centuries of
a Jewish Dynasty," a unique and candid history of the Jews in Galicia,
which interweaves stories of the Backenroth, Kahane, Wieseltier and the
Graubart clans. Beginning >from the 14th century, Karpin documents their
creativity, resourcefulness, deception and courage. He explains how In
the course of his journalistic travels he researched the family?s
rabbinical dynasty and their pioneering development of the Galician oil
belt in the 1800s, hunting down historical records and searching for
family members throughout the world, following a trail through Lvov,
Bolechow, Drohobych, Schodnica and Sanok. That he was able to delve
into archives, historical records, documents, newspaper articles,
diaries, oral histories, and any and every record he could garner
information from, etc., is an incredible feat, in itself which he
will detail in this talk.

Our Gesher Galicia SIG meeting and an All-Galician Birds-of-a-Feather
& Ask the Experts session will also take place on that Monday, so plan
now to join us in Philadelphia.

Remember that the luncheon is open only to those who purchase tickets,
available online through the conference registration site. There will
also be many other Galician-themed talks, films and BOF sessions
occurring throughout the week.

GOLDBERG ADER #general

James Kennedy <j.e.k.genealogy@...>

Greetings,

It's been a long time and so far no major breakthroughs in my research
into my Jewish roots. I started re-researching things in case new
hints or pieces of information may come about that will help lead me
to something new. In my research I found notes about a family member
and after speaking with others in my family we are beginning to wonder
if my grandmother (88 and in NY) has a first cousin that she has never
met.

I found a marriage record using Shoreshim several months ago of my
grandmother's aunt, Neche ADER to a man named Adolf GOLDBERG in 1919
in Tarnow. Somebody suggested that there may have been cousins in
Tarnow and it seems the only possibility would be through this aunt.

In my research, I have been unable to find anything else and I know
it's hard with a common surname like Goldberg. Plus, the time frame
is near impossible to find anything for.

So I guess in my quest for assistance, I am wondering if anybody who
has come across the name Necha has any suggestions for variants of it
to search on. Any other ideas?

Best
