Rav Mordechai JAFFE and DNA testing.
#rabbinic
James Bennett <Bennett@...>
I'm seeking a comprehensive descendant tree of the Rav. Mordechai JAFFE,
"Ba'alei HaLevushim" [~1530-1612]--especially in digital format: FTW or at least in GEDCOM. For years I have been trying to link my JAFFE family in Rawitsch, Posen Province to the Ba'alei HaLevushim, with no success. My oldest ancestor was Avraham Jaffe, b.~1680. >son Moshe> grandsons Shmuel and Avraham, > great grandsons Avraham Shmuel, Shimshon, Meir, Hirsch and Moshe. The name pattern is similar to that of the rabbinical family -- but I haven't found any Mordechai's in my family. I have living JAFFE male relatives--direct-line descendants of my earliest ancestor. Has any of you JAFFE's >from the Levushim family taken a DNA test? If so I will get one of my cousins to do the same and we will see if there is a genetic similarity. Jim Bennett Haifa, Israel |

Aryeh Leib "Harif" HALPERN
#rabbinic
Steven Bloom
I was interested to see if anyone had information on the descendants
of Aryeh Leib "Harif" HALPERN, who lived in the 18th century and was a Rabbi of Opatow and then Sochaczew. I believe he was also briefly the rabbi of Przedborz, probably in the 1770's. Additional he was a mentor to The Przedborzer Rebbe (WELTFRAJD) and the "Holy Jew". There is a lot of information on his direct ancestors, as well as his cousins, but I have found nothing on his descendants. Having lived a long life as a rabbi in several towns, it would have been unusual for him to not have had children, though perhaps he only had daughters who did not marry rabbis or only had sons, none of which became rabbis. I have been looking for a connection between my Halpern family of Piontek, Poland and this extended Halpern (Heilprin, etc.) family. My family claimed a connection to the Seder Hadorot, Jehiel Heilprin, in particular, but due to the proximity of time and place between Aryeh Leib Halpern and my earliest known family members, I think he or others in his immediate family might be the true direct link between my family and this large rabbinic family. I believe Aryeh Leib may also have connections to Yaakov of Widoma (probably surnamed BLUMENSON) , who was a student of Yeshayahu WELTFRAJD, and married his niece (and then later in life became a Hassidic leader in Widoma). Yaakov was most likely my 4th great grandfather. Steve Bloom Farmville, VA |

Rabbi Itche Meir (JARMUK?) of Rechitsa?

Itzhak Epstein
According to an article by Akiva Kostrometzky in the Horodetz yizkor
book, my greatgreatgrandfather, Yermiyah Zerah JARMUK, had a son, Itche Meir, who became a Hasid in the mid 19th century and eventually [the] Rabbi in Rechitsa (Minsk Gub.). My research, so far, has yielded no information about the Rabbi. Does anybody on this list you know anything about him? Itzhak Epstein New York, NY <mailto:iegen@...> |

Hello to the group,
In the scope of a research work I am trying to identify living persons who could be direct descendants, in the paternal line, of the MaHaRaL of Prague or >from his relative Rav Gabriel ESKELES. If someone is such a descendant or knows such a descendant, could he be so kind to let me know. Thanks in advance for your help. Gilbert HENDLISZ (Brussels) |

Rabbi Ahron of Karlin the Great

Gilbert Hendlisz <gilbert.hendlisz@...>
Hello to the group,
I have seen lots of references about the descendants of Rabbi Ahron PERLOW of Karlin the great but nothing about his ancestors. I think he was born around 1736 and that he was a disciple of Rav Dov Ber of Mezerich. His father's name was Yakov who seemed also to have been a rabbi. Are there any sources about the ancestors of Rabbi Ahron Perlow? Thanks in advance for your answer. Gilbert HENDLISZ (Brussels) |

HEILPERIN Trees
#rabbinic
Steven Bloom
There is a genealogical tree chart for Eliezer Lipman Heilprin in
Rosenstein and Weber's "Avnei Zikaron." This tree indicates two sons, Israel (d.1689) and Joseph (1619-1690). Both men had sons Shmuel. Joseph's son was nicknamed "Pulvermacher" and Israel's son was called Shmuel Helman. I can't seem to match him conclusively to any of the Eliezer Lipman Heilperin's in the charts of Meorei Galicia (by Meir Wunder). According to his charts the best bet is Eliezer Lipman of Lublin who had a son Israel of Krotoschin, who had a son Samuel Helman of Mannheim and Metz. This appears to be the match, but this Eliezer doesn't seem to have a son Joseph. Also, no further line >from Samuel Helman is mentioned in Meorei Galicia (at least not in the chart). I'd be interested in a knowledgable opinion on whether these are the same Eliezer Lipman Heilperin. If so, Rosenstein and Weber extend this tree quite a bit. Also, curiously, this tree of Meorei Galicia also shows this particular Heilperin family to be cousins of Jehiel Heilperin of Minsk( "Seder Hadorot")--something like a 3rd cousin to this Eliezer Lipman. I haven't see any other source mention this particular connection. Thoughts? I am a descendant of Rabbi Elyiahu Nachum (probably ben Ruven of Glowno) HALPERN of Piontek (1789-1869). His family later claimed he was a descendant of the Seder Hadorot. I have yet to find the connection, but I am trying to be a collector of all things Halpern, Heilperin, etc. Steve Bloom Central Virginia |

I agree with Celia. It is always good practice to get whatever exists. You never
know what it will say until you see what it says. That goes for passenger lists and every other document. For example, my great grandmother came to the US as a little girl. I had her death certificate with her parents names, and I had found her origin on the Hamburg Passenger lists - and her birth record >from there. But what did she do in the US by herself; obviously somebody met her at the ship? I had ordered birth records for her kids, a few at a time, some >from Missouri, some >from NYC - and there weren't any. I finally ordered the last one, thinking 'what is the point, I know who she is and who the kid is'. Well, it actually existed and had another maiden name on it! I knew the surname of her US family. If I hadn't bothered to try to get that birth record (I was short of money at the time), I would not have found out what I didn't know was there. Bottom line is 'You never know'. Searching ZAJDMAN descendants.

Sheila Lanch <robinsmead@...>
Dear Genners,
I am searching for descendants of my paternal g. grandfather Izrael ZAJDMAN ( who was born around 1826) and lived in Pilica, Poland, in the late 1860s. His second wife was Frajdla Laja LENCZNER ( my g. grandmother), whom he married in 1868 in Pilica. (I have no knowledge of any children of Izrael and his first wife) My grandfather Icyk ZAJDMAN (son of Izrael and Frajdla) had a niece whose name was, possibly, DORFMAJER or DORFBERGER. Also, he talked about a brother, and I am interested to know if this brother had children. Grandfather came to the U.K. in the mid 1880s to live with his uncle Abram Maier LENCZNER. Any information about my family would be gratefully appreciated. Many thanks, Sheila R. Lanch (nee Sideman). Leicestershire U.K. robinsmead@...
