Hello,
how does one obtain a record that shows up in JRI searches, but doesn't come with any film number (thus cannot be obtained through the LDS) nor the PSA header information (thus, as far as I understand, cannot be ordered through the given PSA) ? For instance, I have several KANO records that show under the following hea= ding: Lomza 1827-1886 Lomza Gubernia / Bialystok Province Located at 5311' 2205' Last updated June 2001 Is it possible to obtain such records ? Ben Forman <ben.forman@...>
Dear Genners
I'm looking for some advice in taking my FURMAN ancestor search a little further back. Over the last few years I have had real success with the JRI-PL Kaluszyn records and have found records which have led me back to the early 1800s, in particular 4 birth records for my GGGF and his 3 brothers in the 1830s/1840 and a death record for my GGGGF >from 1880 which gives his age and hence an approximate DOB in the first decade of the 1800s. I haven't however been able to find his marriage record which was presumably in the later 1820s and a search of JRI-PL online for further links in other towns has proved fruitless. The names of those I am looking for details of are Kelman FURMAN and his wife Yacheved, and I am wondering if other records exist for this time period/area which might offr further clues - eg. census or tax records? Many thanks as always Ben Ben Forman Manchester UK searching: BERNSTEIN/WEINER: Ylakai, CAHN/WOLF: Koeln; FURMAN: Kaluszyn; GEVER: Daugavpils/Dvinsk, Latvia; SAWADY: Zavadi,Posen; STILLMAN: Pilica/Czestechowa; Zeyder/Zeidler: Kursan, Lithuania

Eliyahu FEINBERG from Vilna (Boston, New Haven, Bronx)
#lithuania
MandJMeyers <mandjmeyers@...>
My great-grandmother Feiga (nee FINBERG) LANDSMAN came >from the Vilna area,
and possibly Podberezhe (Paberze) before that. When her husband Abram died, she emigrated to Boston to be with her children. So far, I have not found any of her FINBERG relatives. Feiga's father was Eliyahu FINBERG and a US census search shows only 3 Elihu FEINBERG in the country, so one (or more) of those may be related. Elihu Feinberg #1: 1930 census in New Haven, CT, parents Samuel and Sadie, siblings Alfred, Jack and Belle, father born in Lithuania, Elihu was 11 in1930 and born in CT. Elihu Feinberg #2: 1930 census in the Bronx, NY, parents Michael and Emma, siblings Rose, Minerva and Dorothy, father born in Lituania, Elihu was 23 in 1930 and born in NY. 1920 census in the Bronx shows other children though hard to read (Julia and 2 others) Elihu Feinberg #3: 1930 census in the Dorchester section of Boston, MA, wife Ida, children David and Pauline, Elihu was 32 in 1930 and was born in NY. If any of this is familiar, please contact me privately at <MandJMeyers@...> Marty Meyers Montclair, NJ

HI, group!
If you're reading this, it means the JewishGen server migration is done and successful! Congratulations to everyone who helped accomplish this wonderful improvement! I live in California, and would love for someone in New York City to check a record for me, at the Municipal Archives. I am researching the Simernitsky branch of my family - my mother's great-grandmother, and have learned that a Scheindel Semernitsky died Oct. 12, 1930 in Brooklyn. Her death certificate is # 19880. If any of you will be going there soon, I'd love to get a copy of the death certificate. I know there's a copy fee of $10 and will gladly pay it. Thanks! Re: 1788 Decree of surnames for Jews

Talila Stan
Dear Genners,
Rivka Schirman wrote on February 4, 2009: "The decree demanding that, beginning with January 1st 1788, each Jew should have a constant surname is online on the website of Shoreshim (http://www.shoreshim.org/en/infoEmperorJoseph.asp)." At first I would like to thank Rivka for this most interesting info, and secondly I have a question: Does anyone know whether the decree demanding that the Jews in the Austrian Empire take German names included Brody as well? I ask because my ancestors who lived in Brody at the time of the decree (before they left for Odessa about 1800), took the name "Pasternak" which is not German but Polish-Russian. So could Galician Jews take also names that were not German? Thank you, Talila Stan
