Ancestry Magazine's current issue (March-April 2009) which was just released,
has an article by Paul Rawlins, "Wired States of America: A Look at Digital
Records Near You" Starting on page 2 there is a listing of those US states with
their URL's that have some records available. The records listed are those
supported by the state (i.e.not private organizations unless its an official part
of the state as are some historical societies) The records are not only vital
records (birth, marriage and death) but many are historical records or records of
significance. Not all states that are listed have their vital records on line or
digitized, you will have to go to the individual state site to see exactly what
is available.

I had a similar problem for my gGrandmother's documents. I had put in both
a FOIA request with USCIS as well as an online request for documents from
NARA. The USCIS copies were illegible, but the NARA copies were perfectly
readable. However, not all docs were in both sets. My guess is that NARA
got the original typewritten copy and USCIS got a carbon copy (remember that
these were the days of carbon paper; photocopying didn't come along until
the 1960s).

Looking for information on and connections to WIZEL family #general

srhlsr@...

I'm researching the WIZEL family on behalf of someone here in Israel.
(He told me that the surname was originally WIESELTHIER, but JRI-PL
indices have shown members of his family with the surname WIZEL( He
doesn't know when the surname WIESELTHIER was shortened to WIZEL.)

He is interested in information on the family, originally >from Poland,
as far as is known, and in contact with any relatives; he is only aware
of relatives within Israel.

He (and his siblings), and his father (and siblings, I assume) were
born in Israel. His paternal grandfather, Shlomo Menachem, a"h, was
born in Siemiatycze, Grodno, Poland, and passed away in Israel.

His paternal great-grandfather, Chaim Ye-huda, a"h, was born in Lukow
(?), Poland, and moved to Israel in the 1920s.

His paternal great-great-grandfather, Shlomo Mendel WIESELTHIER, a'h,
passed away at a young age in the early 1890s; he was a scribe in
Siedlice, Poland;

Very little is known and it would be appreciated to know more about
this Shlomo Mendel WIESELTHIER, a'h;

His wife was born a GARBOWNIK. (I found the index to their marriage in
JRI-PL.)

His wife's mother's first name was Pessia Ita.

This is basically the furthest back that this family can trace.

There is also the question of a possible relationship to Holocaust
survivor and writer, Elie Wiesel.
Do any of you know where I can find a family tree, and/or family
information re Elie Wiesel and his family?

Please e-mail back to me at : srhlsr@... with any information on
this family and/or any connections/relationships you have with it.

Thank you!

An early Happy Purim!!

Polaroid photo/photography #general

Cindy POTTER Taylor <knife-princess@...>

Genners,

I was recently given a photo of my grandmother and aunt which appears to be
an EARLY Polaroid. It's in a paper matting with the wording, "A Polaroid
Land Picture finished in just 10 seconds. The back side goes into detail
about the process itself. Does anyone have a time line for Edwin Land and
his marvelous invention?
The photo is close to sepia in tone (as opposed to black and white) and I
was wondering if someone could nail down a circa date. I can upload photo
to my website, should you need to see it.

Please respond privately.

It just dawned on me that the two are not necessarily linked, I mean
owning or leasing a tavern/inn is not necessarily linked to selling
alcohol. The law prohibiting alcohol sales by Jews date, so far as I know
1911, but - so far as I know - it does not mention running inns and/or
taverns.
And how should one justify for example two entries in 1891 Galicia
directory in Sanok for:
Brindel ENGLAND - Spiritushandler and Majer ENGLAND - Branntweinhandler

Re: Beer and Jews in Galicia #galicia

Grzegorz Kowalski <gregg@...>

Dear Pamela,

An article about Jewish beer brewers has been already written and
published in "The Galitzianer" a couple of years ago, by myself.

Regards,

Grzegorz Gembala
Krakow, Poland

MODERATOR'S NOTE: Greg's four-page article, "Galician Beer,"
appeared in the May 2003 issue (Vol. 10, No. 3) of The
Galitzianer. It includes a list of Jewish leaseholders and
proprietors of breweries in dozens of Galician towns in the
early 20th century. As Pamela Weisberger recently mentioned,
back copies of The Galitzianer, 1993 to 2007, are available on
CD, http://www.jewishgen.org/galicia/html/FourteenYears.html .
