Searching for family BITTER / BITER.
Yisrael and his wife Chaya Sara b. c. 1860's/early 70's had the following children - Yona Leib, Bluma, Aharon Josef, Pnina and Yaakov. Pnina and Yaakov survived the Shoah, both re-married and moved to Israel. Pages of Testimony for the family give either Slobozia Banila, Storojinet, Bukovina, Romania or purely Banila, Storojinet, Bukovina, Romania - I am confused as are both places one and the same? Banila is now called Banilov and is in the Ukraine. If anyone has knowledge of another branch of the Bitter family >from Slobozia Banila please contact me. Thank you. Patricia Wilson (Israel)

Philpot Street Synagogue - Members List
#unitedkingdom
DAVID CANTOR <de.cantor@...>
There is a list of members of Philpot Street Synagogue although I cannot
remember the date it was prepared. It contained the name of my great grandmother and that dates it prior to 1939. It was posted 31 May 2001 by Cyril Fox. Unfortunately, I cannot trace the list but there may be others whose filing system is rather better than mine. I do however, have the message that Cyril sent to me in reply to a question; it is as follows. "The point that struck me was that the shul was called Philpot St S'fardish but all the seatholders names were Ashkenazi. It transpired that it was a very "frum" shul which used the "sephardic nusah" ; ie the service was based on the old Sephardic liturgy. This form of service was originally introduced by Isaac Luria (1534-1572), known as Ari (The Lion) and King of the Cabbalists. His followers, Ashkenazi Cabbalists preserved this form of service. The synagogue was affiliated to the Federation of Synagogues." End of message David Cantor

Mrs Shulamit B Spain-Gayer <castaneye@...>
Below you will find the flickr link to photos >from two visits to
Kiripolcz/Kostoliste, Gajari and Malacka/Malacky. I post the pictures of the memorials in Gajari and Malacka because of the Jewish names. As I understood >from an elderly man at the Jewish Museum in Bratislava, Malacka had the Shul and a Rabbi, Gajari had just a Rabbi and Kiripolcz in between these two places with only a few Jewish families had no Jewish institutions. The distance between Malacky and Gajari is about 5 km. Kiripolcz is in between these two places. In 2006 the Shul in Malacka was pictured on the cover of the town's map. It was marked as music Academy, but at the end of August the place was not accessible. We assumed that this was because the academic year had not yet started. On our second visit in 2008, the Shul had become a place for art classes. One can easily see the beauty of the place. In my opinion it is a great pity that this beautiful Shul is not preserved. Because Shuls which are not used have no importance in Jewish thought, the Rabbi in Bratislava showed no interest when I told him about the Shul.It seems that the Malacka had been a particularely bad place in WWII. If any of you has an interest in this area and wants to do something about the Shul, please let me know. http://www.flickr.com/photos/castaneye/ Shulamit Spain, Scotland

GLOGAU - CZUCZKA Family

GLOTAAS-GLOGAU <glotaas@...>
Shalom,
I am again making attempts to find out more about my family which is originally >from Vienna, Austria. My great grandfather was Pinkus FRANKFURTHER who married Cecilia KOLBER. Their daughter Hedwig FRANKFURTHER married Hermann GLOGAU - they are my grandparents - Hermann GLOGAU 1864 - 1903. They had a son Artur GLOGAU who married Grete CZUCZKA = my parents - Artur Glogau 1896 - 1932. We know that my father was a commercial man, it is not known in which trade, or what he studied. My late father was also very involved in the business community and student organizations, such as Jordania, Mirjam, Chevrusa and Bund Zion Ingenieure & Techniker. Together with three of his friends they joined together to form a group called Haboneh - Association of Zionist Engineers & Technicians. I would appreciate hearing any stories concerning my family or get information where and how I could get more information, who else could I contact? Many thanks in advance. Passengers Missing from Manifest
#general
Irwin B. Margiloff
On March 4, 1900 my grandfather Isaac Bodenstein arrived in New York on the
"New York". He was listed alone in the Ellis Island manifest. Yet he had a 15-month old son Louis and a wife Rose who delivered another son in New York five months later. Little Louis and Rose almost surely would have accompanied Isaac, but they are not listed on that manifest or any other, including the outgoing UK manifest that also shows no one travelling with Isaac. During that particular brief period of time apparently, cabin-class passengers weren't fully listed, or listed at all in the U. S. manifests, and were treated differently upon arrival >from steerage class passengers. So could Louis and Rose have made the same trip on the "New York" but not have been recorded? Are there demonstrated cases where passengers known to have been travelling together were not all listed, based on differences in accommodations? Irwin Margiloff

Immigration to Palestine (approx. 1926 - 1930s?)
#general
Casey Ashe <caseyashe@...>
All,
I am looking for information on Meyer Ast >from Berezhany, Galicia (Ukraine), who lived in Galveston and then Houston in 1890's to around 1915. Subsequent to this, he, his wife and daughter moved to New York (Bronx). His wife, Anna (Annie on her death certificate), died in 1924. Anna and the daughter, Esther, are buried in Riverside Cemetery in Saddlebrook, New Jersey on the grounds of Khal Adath Yeshurun Bronx. However, Meyer is not buried here. Information >from a relative states that Esther lived in Palestine in the 1930s, returning to the United States sometime later. Meyer may have immigrated to Palestine with Esther and died there. I am trying to locate information about Esther and possibly Meyer in Palestine during this time period. This would be immigration, residences, and possible death information for Meyer. from what I understand, I would need to contact the US Departmentof State for passport information since the date of emigration is after 1925. However, I also understand that passports were recommended, but not required for travel oversees at this time. Recently, I have discovered that Esther was married at one time. I have an obituary >from 1932 for her half-brother, Charles Streusand of Houston. The copy is not very good, but it indicates to the best of my ability to read it that her married name was Jourovska and she was living in Jerusalem at this time. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Please reply to me personally and thanks in advance.
