Liwinzie? #general

Greetings,
First I'd like to thank whoever posted the information about obtaining
arrival cards >from the HIAS. I received the copies of the cards for several
of my family. I have one question that I'm hoping someone can shed some
light on. The last residence in Russia is listed as Liwinzie. I can't seem
to find anything about this location. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you.

South Nyack, NY. Jewish Cemeteries #general

I am looking for an uncle's burial site. I believe he lived in South
Nyack, N.Y. in 1951. Does anyone know of the name of a Jewish cemetery
in or around South Nyack. Please answer privately. Thank you. Carol
Streem Cleveland, Ohio

MODERATOR NOTE: The JewishGen website contains resources that go a
long way toward answering this question. Look at the IAJGS International
Jewish Cemetery Project at <http://www.jewishgen.org/cemetery/>, and
find your way to New York State. Once you have found the county where
South Nyack is located (using, for example, Google or Wikipedia), look
for references to this county. You will find a link to the cemetery
list of the county historical society, and contact information for
questions about Jewish burials.

It's usually a good idea to explore the JewishGen website first. Given
the right resources, you are probably the best person to find the answer
to your own questions.

Re: MOSIER #general

Roger Lustig

Dear Deborah:
Welcome! I'm glad you've taken a look around JewishGen.org. Have you
registered your interest with the JewishGen Family Finder?
http://www.jewishgen.org/JGFF will let others know of your interests,
and will allow you to contact others who have listed a particular surname.

Questions like yours actually come up a lot here. With no disrespect
intended: Surnames aren't Jewish. People are Jewish. There are very,
very few surnames that have been held *only* by Jews, and the reasons
for this are many and varied.

Can you tell us a little about your great-grandmother? Where did she
come from? Where did she live? Have you found other MOSIERs in that
vicinity?

The surname MOSIER may look like "Moses", but it also looks like the
German surname MOSER, which is very common. Check out an on-line German
phone book--you'll find thousands. That doesn't mean that there are no
Jewish MOSERs, nor does it rule out that *they* adopted the surname
because it sounded like "Moses."

According to Lars Menk's _A Dictionary of German-Jewish Surnames_, there
were several Jewish MOSER families in Germany in the 19thC, but none
named MOSIER. But that's only Germany. Alexander Beider has published
several volumes on Jewish surnames >from Eastern Europe; you might check
those.

Trying a few other on-line phone directories could give you an idea of
where MOSIERs live today, and that could give you a clue as to where to
look next.

Good luck, and let us know what you find!

All I came onto the site to do was to find out if my

of the family name. Does this mean that the name Mosier is actually
Jewish (sounds and looks like it could come >from Moses/Moishe) or is
it just that there have been some people on the list happen to have
similar sounding names to that?

Re: Falkenau Family - Prague #austria-czech

David & Diana Laufer <dlaufer@...>

Guy,

A search in the indexes of the National Archives of Australia
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch.aspx for FALKENAU showed three
records, two of which could be of interest to you.

One record was for an application for naturalisation for a Walter FALCON , also
known as FALKENAU, born 6 November 1901.

The other was a Walter FALCOM who in 1946 sponsored George FALKENAU, Marjorie
FALKENAU and Jennifer FALKENAU, all of whom then had Czechoslovakian nationality.
Presumably that sponsorship was for immigration into Australia.

By entering the above website and repeating the index search you would then be
able to order copies of the actual records.

For your information, numerous FALCONs and FALKs can be found in the online
Australian White Pages telephone directory

Meaning of Private or External Student #poland

Alan Weiser <alanboy@...>

In preparing a database of students at a Kolomyya secondary school I
have noticed the following entries. In some cases a student's name is
affixed with the word "private" and in other cases with the word
"external".

I have been told that "external" means the student did not live at the
boarding school/lived elsewhere, and the "private" meant the student
did not attend the school but had home-tutoring and just came into the
school for exams. The word "private" was only found with students
that were listed in either Class 1 through VIII. The word "external"
was only found in the list of students that passed the graduation exam
(Matura). Can anyone confirm these or offer other explanations for
these terms?

Please respond directly to me at alanboy@starpower.net.
