Hello,
I have the marriage record of Czilli STOSSEL to Israel DRESNER in 1859 >from Eger, Hungary. It is written in German. I would like to have the occupations translated. To my very untrained eye they look something like: Kappel....sor Stushwaye Filsrbadurfliger If anybody can make sense of these, please let me know. I can send a copy of the image if needed. Many thanks!! Judy Petersen Fort Collins, CO Searching: DRES[D]NER, STOSSL, HECHT, DEUTSCH >from Eger

I have finally been able to locate the family name of my grandfater, Fred
Cohen. According to the Ellis Island Passenger List, he came to the United States >from Keshenev in 1906. His passport states he was 28 years old at the time and his name was Fichel Kotischnik. Traveling with him were is wife Suka (Sara) a 3 year old daughter Zelde (Zelda) and a baby boy. There was a brother who paid for his passage. This family settled in Philadelphia and then New York. Is there anyone out there who might identify with this family? Barbara Hoffstetter (nee Friedman)

Missing person? Misread that name!

Zev Griner <zgriner@...>
I recently tried to search for a Lewitta family on a manifest.
I knew the correct name was written, but I couldn't get a hit. When I carefully wrote out the name, I realized the name could be read Leurtta, and, Bingo, there they were, in spite of the dot for the 'i'. Canadian Census Campaign History Written
#general
jan meisels allen <janmallen@...>
This is for those interested the history of the Canadian Census
campaign waged to get the census released and the "compromise" of the "opt-in" question. Canadian Senator Lorna Milne, who spearheaded the long campaign waged to regain the public access to Historic Census records that genealogist and historians believed regulations attached to the Privacy Act already stated that the public could have, has written a book, titled "Deeply Rooted - The story of one Senator's battle to preserve the Historic Census results. It can be found on Senator Milne's website at http://www.sen.parl.gc.ca/lmilne/ There is no cost to download the book. This was announced by Gordon Watts, Co-chair, Canada Census Committee. I have no interest in the book, other than it portrays an interesting "battle" to preserve open census in Canada. Jan Meisels Allen Director, IAJGS and Chairperson, Public Records Access Monitoring Committee

I would like to know if there were many households with the name REICHLINE.Chasing a name like REICHLINE leaves you chasing many variant spellings. An ancestor of mine married a Rakhlin in Nezhin Ukraine in 1886. He was originally registered in Novo-Aleksandrovsk uezd, which is not far >from Vitebsk, and I have seen the name spelled Rakhlin, Raikhlin, Roklin, Roikhlin, Rokhlin. Alexander Beider in his Dictionary of Jewish Surnames >from the Russian Empire points out that this is a matronymic for people who are children of Rakhel, and specifies areas where it is particularly found, but none of them is Vitebsk. Beider does give the spelling Reikhin, but not Reichline. I do not recall seeing many Russian names ending with -line; could that be an American spelling, or did you find it in a Russian document?
