Your family and most of mine are considered Litvak which usually preferred sweet to savory. Litvak is based on the Polish term for the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Litwe which is pronounced as Litva. Also included is the eastern most part of Poland including Bialystok which was switched from the Grand Duchy part of the Commonwealth to the Polish Kingdom part by Stefan Bathory as Lithuania weakened.

Hi there,

Trying to find out in which cemetery in London are buried Rabbi Judah
(Yidele) Horowitz, Admur Dzikov-Jerusalem, who died in London in 1989
and R. Shalom (Schulim) Moskowitz, who died in London in 1958.
Buried near or next to them are the couple, Hentche (nee Rubin of
Ropshitz) and husband Naftali Zvi Parnes. Is the couple buried in the
ohel (mausoleum) of the rabbis or just nearby or in their own
mausoleum?

For collaborative purposes, I am researching descendants of Phillip and Leah WALTER, both of whom where married in or near Warsaw, Poland around 1903 and immigrated to the US in 1804 and 1905, respectively. Phillip and Leah had seven children all born in Newark, New Jersey. More information is available on request. One of the children, Max was a nationally known commercial artist.

 

Phillip Walter was the oldest sibling of the family of Israel and Sarah Walter who lived in or near Warsaw Poland. My wife’s grandfather, David Walter was the second oldest.

One my interests is to elaborate upon the possible connection of Phillip and David Walter's mother Sarah and Leah Walter's father, Jacob. Both Sarah and Jacob shared the surname which sounded like Filo.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Lodz was a large industrial and modern city mostly involved in textile manufacturing to Russian market.

This market was lost after WWI (due to German occupation, 1916, then Bolshevik Revolution, 1917, and last but not the least, by Soviet-Polish war, 1919-121).

In 30', one third of Jewish population was living on welfare.

 

Due to its size, Lodz' "yellow pages" directories (of course whithout phone) were edited as early as 1900 to help people to find who and where they could contact for business.

Lists are sorted by kind of activity, then names.

You can find some shops & business ads within these directories.

Last directory was 1937-1939.

Enter your parents' name and place of Lodz to focus your search.

You download full scan (all pages) of these books, then look at indexed page with your "names".

 

Another important data is available in Lodz, as this city hadn't been destroyed during WWII and all archives (including vital records, ..) are available.

 

During interwar period, each shop, each company had to be registered to get authorization to do business.

So you could get copy of business registration file of your GGF.

To get mine (an Irish pub in main street), I was lucky to be connected to a local genealogist specialized in Jewish genealogy.

She could find these copies ... and all my vital records from 1850 to 1939.

 

An astonishing conclusion: these companies had not been closed by Shoah and were still registered after WWII.

In early 70's, Polish administration sent official letter to their address: as nobody replied (...), they closed the registration!

Hi   I am a descendent of Jacob Siedner abt 1810-1870 from the Upper Silesia area, probably around Bytom.
I have come across several names that I am trying to connect.
Lobel Siedner born 1779 and Bernhard Siedner born 1797.  I was wondering if they may be brothers.
Also Simon Siedner 1750 ? father.

Good Afternoon,

I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I've discovered some family immigration records from the turn of the 20th century. I know who the family members are and can figure out their names. However, I have run into a slight issue - the immigration paperwork says they're from the town of Radomyshl. However, in my research, I've discovered that there are several towns called Radomyshl, one in Ukraine and one in Poland. They're about 700 km apart.  I doubt the early 20th century American immigration officials really knew which Radomyshl my ancestors were coming from, but I am trying determine which one - my  (now deceased) family members listed Russia as the country of origin, which leads me to believe they are from the Ukrainian one. But I am not sure, because we've always heard that we were Galitzianers, which would lead me to think Poland. 

Any tips or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

While researching my paternal forefathers I came across on FTJP a
Isaac KATZOFF-KATSOF who I believe may be connected to our family.
Interestingly he is listed with the same exact spelling as our family
,KATZOFF, though his descendants spell it KATSOF. The data I saw was
from 2000 so possibly the contact person is not the same person today.

He had a son Joe (died 1984) whose wife, Rose died in 1981 . They may
have spent some time in Montreal.

If anyone is doing research on this family I would like very much to
share information.

Has anyone researched the early Jewish settlers in North Adams, Massachusetts? It is a small city in far northwestern Massachusetts, in northern Berkshire County among the Berkshire Mountains. My relatives (from Orsha, in what was then Mogilev guberniya Russia, and now is in Belarus) arrived in North Adams certainly by the late 1890s and probably by the early 1890s.

Congregation Beth Israel in North Adams maintains a web page about its history (http://www.cbiweb.org/History.html) which says "An unsigned history found in the synagogue indicates that the first Jews arrived in North Adams in 1867...we've discovered newspaper accounts of their High Holiday services in 1888." If it's true that Jews first arrived in 1867, then I assume a systematic review of US census records from 1870 and 1880 is likely to find them (presumably other records would be of use as well, such as vital records, town census books, etc).
