Finding The Correct Record #general

Hi Cousins,

I'm having trouble figuring out which image is the one I need. I'm
hoping someone here has done this before and can help me. This whole
numbering system has me confused.

I'm looking for the birth record of Movsha-Meer MAJZLIN. The listing is
as follows:

I have been there many times. Initially I tried taking photos, but the staff is fairly alert and will reprimand you. Recently much of the microfilm has been indexed and you can see images online rather than using a microfilm reader (which are usually 50% out of commission and out of focus). The place is run on a shoestring clearly, and I have sympathy for the obvious fact they have no funding. At least the staff is helpful. My solution is to make up in advance a spreadsheet with identifiers for all the records I want to look up, and then when I have the image, enter the information in columns prepared for the data I need. The value to genealogists of marriage documents is to be able to decipher the names of the parents of both parties, addresses that help verify identities, and sometimes the officiant and witness names can be helpful as well. Birth and death record images can also contain unindexed information. Beware that this office has only the archived records that NYC allows to be public, and that NYC is very recalcitrant about liberating records that should be public by now (e.g. births only available to 1909). This office is separate from the Health Dept, which has later records and is much less public-friendly.

A female Losche Tobias emigrated to the States, arriving in 1914 from Swerzhen, now Belarus.  What might her American name be?
This is not a very common name.  I have checked Jewish given name websites.  I cannot find her in the 1915 NYS Census even though she went to an uncle in Brooklyn in 1914.

Thank you for your quick response to my question, Sherri!  I’ve already researched Familysearch.com & other websites.  I have almost reached the conclusion that my grandfather never was naturalized although I just received a very specific link within the NARA.  I will try this link before I put this question to rest.

Years ago I got LDS microfilm sent to a local Family History Library where they had a USB writer and I copied an entire film or two to USB and then created an indexing project and shared the index with JewishGen. I don’t know if NYC Municipal Archives has similar equipment.

"Alternate asset manager" is a broad and loose term that includes venture capitalists and private equity fund managers. Imprecisely, it means managing money in ways other than buying and selling publicly traded stocks and bonds. 

(Tiny anecdote unrelated to your question, but my own name basically translates as "Black Stone". In the early days of the internet I tried to register "blackstone.com" but "some company or other" that I'd not heard of at the time beat me to it.)

My father’s name was Usher Harast/Arost, becoming Oscar in the U.S. He had an uncle in Philadelphia also named Usher, and I have found several Jarast relatives in South America named Uscher. I have never found the spellings you posted. My father was from Dumbraveni, Soroki, Bessarabia. HOWEVER, I have recently discovered a large branch from Piotrkow, Poland with that name, spelled Jarost. I’m not an expert on Polish, but since your names include the letter J, perhaps that’s something you might pursue. Happy hunting,

Officially, this is not permitted. My first time there I discovered I could not copy with my phone. Since I was interested in the data and not the certificate, I just wrote down info. In the NYC Municipal Building, if you need a Naturalization done through their Supreme Court, you can photograph everything including the valuable Petition.

This might be a silly question but I’m curious. I’ve several instances where Jews can apply for foreign citizenship while retaining US citizenship. My question is what would be the benefit of having a foreign citizenship?  Taxes?  Foreign Travel?

Do you know where in Galicia?  I'm searching for a Sperber family from Sieniawa, Galicia (now Poland).  There was a very large Sperber family in and near Zablotow and Ivano-Frankivsk (now Ukraine), although I can't yet find any connection to my Sieniawa family.

You don't actually need to go to the NYC Municipal Archives to get a
copy of those records. FamilySearch has them digitized, and while you
do need to visit a Family History Center to access the digitized
images, once you're there you can freely print or download the
records. FamilySearch specifically has birth records up to 1909,
one-page marriage certificates up to 1937, and death records up to
1948. The Archives alone have the three-page marriage licenses up to
1949.

As for the legality of prohibiting taking a picture of a public
record, that is a very good question I hope a more legal-literate
person can answer. Is it in fact legal for them to prohibit taking
pictures of public records?

My Heritage - Theory of Family Relativity #general

Has anyone had any luck with this facility on My Heritage?  MH says:
 
Family Theories of Relativity will be generated between you and a match based off of common information in your family trees. The more information you add to your tree, whether it be manually added or confirming accurate matches, can trigger future theories.  
 
I have over 14,000 DNA matches on MH, and over 2,200 people on my family trees, but not a single match has ever activated the Theory of Family Relativity.
 
I asked MH Support about this and they said:
 
'As there are no theories there at this time, it simply means none have been generated based off of the information currently in your tree and the trees of your DNA matches. The information in your tree is the only information at your disposal to add to or edit that can trigger a theory.
 
This is why I would recommend continuing to build on your tree in any way possible, as any piece of information can trigger a theory. Note that it would also be imperative for your DNA matches to be working on their own trees for theories to be generated.
 
For some more information on the feature itself, theories always begin in your tree and end in the family tree of your DNA Match. The traversal of the path may include other family trees on MyHeritage, Geni, FamilySearch or historical records on the tree.'
 
Doesn't make much sense to me.  14,000 people out there matching my dna and not even my 2 closest dna matches, who I know are my 2nd cousin once removed and my 3rd cousin, attract the Theory.  
 
Am I missing something?
