Family trees online #general

Trudy Barch

I have just read the Discussion Group Archives and am still very confused
about security. It seems like most people are saying dates of deceased
people are OK but *not* on living people.

But my relatives would like all the information (deceased and living).

Any suggestions how I can solve my personal dilemma.

Thank you, Trudy Barch,

"Helen's Story" A Holocaust Memoir by Helen Rothstein #poland

Howard Orenstein

Today, the web site, "Explore Your Jewish Heritage in Wyszkow, Poland,"
begins serializing a Holocaust memoir called, "Helen's Story," written
by Helen ROTHSTEIN (nee ROSENBERG).

Helen, a distant relative of mine [her great grandparents, Zysman and
Ruchel BLUM (BLOOM) were my great great great grandparents], graciously
permitted me to do this with her copyrighted manuscript hoping that it
could it bring her tragic yet triumphant and heartfelt story to a much
wider audience.

In her introduction to Chapter 1, Helen writes:

"Before I was born {circa 1930} my father had tried to come into the
United States >from Poland. He got as far as Mexico but no farther. He said
that Mexico was hot and he didn't know the language and with the quotas he
wasn't allowed into the States. My father thought that with the business
that he had back in Wyszkow, that he might as well go back to Poland . . .
But this was all before I was born and . . ."

Helen continues with "her earliest memories of her happy life in the
small Polish town of Wyszkow. She is bold, mischievous and sometimes a
rebellious child. She recounts her vivid memories of the dynamic, loving
and close-knit life she had in pre-war Poland: Her father's and mother's
business, the joys of Shabbos, visits to the Yiddish theater in Warsaw,
being one of the first households to have a telephone, and her brother's
Bar Mitzvah as the clouds of war and destruction gather.

Against this backdrop was the pervasive anti-Semitism that seemed a
normal part of life: Polish laws that clashed with Jewish holiday
celebrations that fell on a Sunday, the requirement that Jews have
Christian business partners, the taunts of the Christians that Jews were
Christ killers.

As the Germans advance on Helen's small town, the decision on how to
live through the terror surrounding the family is made. Helen's uncle
wanted the family to flee toward the Russian lines. But her father,
remembering as a young boy in the First World War that the Germans were
kinder than the Russians, decided against leaving."

Yiddish Theatre and Vadeville #YiddishTheatre Phil BERNSTEIN - Violinist to Yiddish theatre, London - Obituary 6 June 1996 #yiddish

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

There has been a call for more activity on this list. With only 80 members,
that is rather optimistic. Even SIGs with over 900 members, find it hard to get
many to contribute! Two recent postings to this group were called "RE: ytandv
digest: October 10, 2007". Please, do not hit the return button when you reply
otherwise you get this *meaningless* subject line. A good subject line can make
a posting.

There is little I can contribute to this forum "de novo" apart >from items I
come across serendipitously whilst scouring the internet for something totally
different. Here is one such item I found today and enjoyed reading. It appears
not to have been reported before:

Obituary: Phil BERNSTEIN - Independent, The (London), Jun 6, 1996 by
Rosalind GOLD ... "For over 60 years Phil Bernstein provided the tragedies,
comedies and romances of the Yiddish Theatre in Britain with their common and
essential element: the distinctive music."

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4158/is_19960606/ai_n14048206

Names in the article include Yidel GOLDBERG; S.J. HARENDORF; Ferdinand STAUB [I
will write about him next]; Isidore BERMAN; Madame Fanny WAXMAN, Meier
TZELNIKER; Maurice SCHWARTZ and Richard TAUBER. Leading British comedian
feature also.

Phil BERNSTEIN married the daughter of Meier TZELNIKER in 1941. According to
the obituary, Phil BERNSTEIN practiced his violin every day till shortly before
his death. Did he really get his permanent job because of an overcoat borrowed
in a hurry? I am sure his excellent violin playing must have helped him too!

I suggest a letter to the Academy Library could help to resolve the

Barbara Rubinstein is searching for information about Dorothy
(Rubenstein) Raymond, an actress >from the 1920's and 1930's. The NY
Times carried at least two articles mentioning Ms. Raymond.
The 1928 article about Chicago Theater events tells of her joining
with the Goodman Memorial Company in performing some Ibsen plays and
makes mention of her performance as the cantor's wife in the 1925-26
NY run of the Jazz Singer.
The second article >from 1934 discusses her performance in a play
titled, "Dodsworth".
David Harris

I wonder if anybody has any information on my father's cousin,
Dorothy Raymond nee
Rubinstein, actress and librarian, born around 1900, daughter of
Avrum Juda and
Golda, widow since around 1948, sister of Jeanette, Sarah, Gertrude, Max,
Maurice and Arthur....

Hi, Trudy

There is a great difference between a public and private family tree.

Anything you publish on the Internet that is available to anyone to
see must be censored so that as little information about living people
is shown because of identity theft concerns. In fact, sites like
JewishGen and Rootsweb will automatically hide information about
anyone who is or may be alive. If you create and publish your own web
pages, you must make sure do the same. Be wary of the family-oriented
social network websites that use family trees as the hook. Anyone can
be invited to join these sites so that your in-laws can invite their
in-laws, etc. and you have no idea who is looking at the information.
