The inquiry seems to be a wild goose chase since no specific information is
provided and the death occurred in the 1920's. Probably the person representing the deceased's estate contacted the family for instructions on what to do with the property which had been willed to them. I am assuming that when the family refused to collect anything that the property was disposed of as is usually the case. The family could have asked for the book to be sent to them by mail, but it seems that they did not do that. The book in question would probably have been sold or something similar and is untraceable at this point, especially since no family name is known. If specific information were available, I would have suggested looking for the deceased's estate (will) record in the SA National Archives. Then, if it were available, getting a copy to see what property was mentioned. My great uncle's estate mentioned specific things including a gold watch, amounts of coinage, etc., and who they were to go to. Also, Dr. Gold can always look for the records of his known family who lived in SA and died during the 1920's if he has that information in both the SA National Archives and the RootsWeb sites. It's possible that the title of the group is somewhat off-putting. Many of
us have relatives who were active in theatre but were better known (even to their descendants) for their work in mainstream theatre. For example, my g-uncle Joseph Lance (Lewin) was active on B'way for many years and I'm sure got his start in Yiddish theatre, but it's all but impossible to find any record of his work there so far. Hank Levine Boynton beach fl Moderator's Note: 1. Messages are posted for any member seeking information about people "possibly" associated with the Yiddish entertainment medium, even if their fame came >from non-Yiddish endeavors. 2. Jonina Duker, the founder and coordinator of the group, noted that the YT&V was founded to help people seeking individuals and doing research on the not-as-well documented Yiddish entertainment field. Both Broadway and Hollywood seem better documented and more accesible given English as the source language rather than Hebrew or Yiddish. That's why we need to connect with each other more and help more so that fewer of us can say as Hank Levine just did "all but impossible to find any record of his work there [Yiddish theater]" |

Ben Forman <ben.forman@...>
Hi Genners
I am looking for the DASSA family >from Bat Yam in relation to a memorial notice in the Jewish Chronicle in October 1988 relating to their friend Olive GOULD ne STILLMAN originally >from Merseyside. Olive was married to Philip GOULD in 1947, and had children Susan and Miles. She passed away unfortunately in 1988. According to the notice in the JC her daughter Susan may have been married to Albert and their children are Regine and Mandy. If anyone is familiar with this family I would be grateful if they could contact me, as I believe that Olive would have been my grandfathers first cousin. Re: Family Bibles

Wegner, Peter
Dear Carole and Maury,
The phenomenon of old family siddurim, etc. inadvertently donated to synagogue libraries by owners who did not realize that invaluable family information was listed therein is probably widespread. Some years ago I tried to track down an 18th-century Haggadah in which my mid-19th-century ancestors had recorded the names of their nine children and also those of six of their Australian-born grandchildren. I contacted in London the branch of the family believed to be currently in possession of this book, only to learn that an aunt had donated all the Hebrew books some years before to a local synagogue. But inquiries there failed to track down the Haggadah (which was almost certainly taken by synagogue authorities to the cemetery for burial); and I fear this will have been the fate of almost every old prayer-book that Jgenners may be seeking today. I was luckier than most, however, in that the existence of this Haggadah (and more importantly the list of family names contained therein) came to my attention through a 1945 letter written by an early Anglo-Jewish genealogist, which was published in 1950 in the Australian Jewish Historical Society Journal. Without that piece of good fortune, I would have got absolutely nowhere in tracking down my forebears -- especially those who emigrated Down Under in the mid-19th century. But thanks to the serendipitous publication of the names listed in that old Haggadah, I was able to identify and trace in detail the antipodean wanderings of my great-grandfather John MARKS, his siblings and their COLLINS cousins (whose histories I have documented in an article to be published next month in the forthcoming issue of the AJHS Journal). Re Maury's point about the Cairo Geniza (Genizah being Hebrew for "cache"), this treasure trove of old Hebrew books and letters includes both Hebrew and Arabic- language documents (many letters were written in Arabic language but customarily rendered in Hebrew alphabet letters -- which explains why they were stored in the store-room of the old Fustat synagogue near Cairo for some five centuries instead of being thrown out. After 1400, the cache seems to have been forgotten for 500 years until its discovery by Solomon Schechter in 1898; so even though many of the documents had remained in place for 1,000 years, the actual period covered was only about 500 years (though at least one document was later identified as a medieval copy of a previously unknown ancient document that remained unidentified until the mid-20th century discovery and decipherment of the Dead Sea Scrolls!) Kewell JACOBS - Hanley, UK - Update
#general
Nick Rich
Many thanks to everyone who kindly replied to my question, I received many
different ideas, and one or two which really helped me to find some more information. I have now carried out some extensive searches based on the help given to me, and have found Kewell Jacobs, in 1875 marrying Sophia Cohen, in Prestwich, Lancashire, and this time he calls himself Kevald Jacobs. Although I'm not quite certain as to the origin of Kevald, I can try my good friend Google, and now send for the marriage certificate, which will hopefully take me a bit further back. I note that the oldest son is called Benjamin, so hopefully that is a clue for perhaps Kevald's fathers or Grandfathers name. Again, thanks to all.
