Russian Empire/USSR official residence #general

My great-grandparents lived in Odessa and raised their family there.
However, the official place of residence for them and their Odessa-born
children was Wengrow, Poland.

What would have been the change in their official place of residence
after the Russian Revolution?

Thanks in advance,

that was probably using the name HARMAN for GERMAN an consisted of mother
and 4 children. They were headed for Chicago via Canada.
The maiden voyage of the renamed ship,
ex Auguste-Victoria, was on Jan 22, 1922 to New York.
Hamburg - Quebec was only later that year probably.

Identification of Picture-Rabbi They Dolgin ?? #general

yoni ben-ari <yrcdi@...>

We are in possession of a picture which potrays a group of young men , ages
seem varaious >from teens to 20s, on the back of the picture are scribbled
various words which are not clear but seem to be: Rabbi They Dolgin(os), 875
Lafairs, also 4th street is noted. The rabbinical family DOLGIN is well
known to me but the spelling adding OS seems strange (presuming I am
reading the scribble correctly).

There is a tall portly gentleman with a moustache in the back middle row
whom we presume may be the above Dolgin(os). In the middle of the middle
row is my father-in-law , Rabbi Morris (Moshe) Jerushalmi , (who passed away
25 years ago as did his wife). We presume he was the teacher of the group.

In the front of the group is the youngest member of the group holding a sign
in hebrew reading "Talmidei hashiur haivri" (students of the hebrew class).

I can not decipher >from the picture if the location is in the States or in
Europe but I presume it is in the States since the scribbling on the back
seems to be in english.
We know that my father-in- law had "stops" as an educator in Connecticut, in
L.A and New York. Not being a big "maven" on dating pictures my guess is
that the picture is taken during the 1930s (I believe my father-in-law
arrived in the States during that decade).

Do the above details "ring a bell" with anyone in this group, especially to
any DOLGIN family members?

TIA

Yoni Ben-Ari, Efrat, Israel

Re: Holocaust "Victims' in Teheran #general

Paul & Irene Berman <ikpjb@...>

Thank you for this information.
I know a lady here in Israel who was exiled >from Poland along with her
family to Siberia just before the invasion of Poland. They had been
suspected of "Zionist" activity. At the time, she said they thought of
themselves as terribly unfortunate. In spite of the horrific conditions in
Siberia, after they learned of the fates of those who had remained in
Poland, they thought of themselves as very lucky.
Irene Berman

It's ironic
that what seemed to be their great misfortune of arrest by the Soviets
turned out for most to be their blessing in disguise, as they were not in
Poland when the Germans invaded in June of 1941. Many went on to fight in
Israel's War of Independence. A relative few remain alive today in Israel,
and of course there are many descendants, including relatives of mine in
Har Adar and elsewhere.

"illegitimate" on birth record #general

Lisa

I am struggling to remember this but somehow I recall researching an old
birth record >from Galicia where I questioned the term "illegitimate." I believe
that someone told me that one explanation could be that the parents or even the
grandparents of the newborn failed to pay a certain tax (or fee)? and
therefore the child was not legally registered as legitimate. However, I'm
not certain of this. Has anyone else in the group heard such a theory?
