Departure from the U.S. #general

Crivorot, Sergio

My grandfather emigrated from Opatow, Poland (Russia at that time) to Brazil in 1914. We knew that he had arrived at the very beginning of the First World War. recently I got some documents and a copy of passengers manifest of the vessel that brought him to Brazil, in August 1914.

To my surprise, he came on the British vessel Vauban that sailed from New York approximately on July 25, 1914. Other members of the family that came in other dates all sailed from some European port. So I am wondering about a few things that maybe you would like to speculate or answer affirmatively for me:
  • Was this a usual route - sailing from Europe to the US and then to South America ? Sounds expensive for a third class passenger
  •
  • Would have he lived in the US for a while ? Did he need a visa to arrive to the US in 1914 from Russian Poland ? Maybe this was just a case of immediate connection (the boat sailed Europe - NY - Rio) and he didn't even leave the boat
  •
  • What is the best way to find traces of his stay in or transit through NY ? I have always read several of you discussing US arrivals, but I never paid much attention as it didn't relate to my family history, but now I am curious about what happened

Any speculation is welcome.

Shapsei, Szabsie often in Polish, is a nickname for Shabatai, like Shabatai Zvi. Nothing special about it, other than that.

Sarah Greenberg,
I have not been researching that spelling but of that of MENDELEWICZ, MENDELOVICH and MENDELEWITZ in Belarus. They all mean the same: son of Mendel. The family has roots in Belarus that supposedly go back to 1650. Perhaps we should talk

It may be a variant of Saul or Sol, according to the research I've done..the general meaning of the name refers to forests, and is found in the state's name, PennSYlVANIA, which had lots of forests...janefoss

specific lamdsmannschaft but they have only information linking the Plot
to Mount Sinai Synagogue

Unfortunately no time frame is mentioned but in the 1930s there was a survey of sorts done of all the religious institutions and it is now on microfilm at the NYC City Hall Library .... same building at the Archives but different room in the back of the first floor,

I have not done too much work with the file but when I tried one of the staff in the room helped.  On their computer they had a finding aid with permitted them to search by name and then they can ID the reel and file number.  Some of the surveys were multiple pages with the history of the organization and some were one page and very basic.

Also I believe it is possibly to look at the original incorporation papers to see how they described the organization.  The burial societies, if they were incorporated, worked like an insurance company with that level of regulation by the state so there's a paper trail.  I think the same is true if it was an established shul versus something that operated out of someone's basement or such.

But all of that will only tell you about the organization.  Some had fairly strict rules about maintaining their geographic heritage or such but a lot of them took in outsiders so to speak.  Relatives by marriage or even friends seemed to be able to buy plots. Personally I have family by marriage in a Warsaw plot who had no known connection to Warsaw or even Poland.  The man killed himself and the distraught wife might have turned to a friend or something to help make the arrangements for his burial or since most burial societies shunned a suicide they might have had to hunt around to find one that did not know him or did not care that he killed himself.

Long way of saying you can find information on the organizations but that does not certainly confirm the personal information.

My great great grandfather was known in Romania as Shapsie, but when he came to America (1889), he Americanized it to Saul.  His Hebrew name was Shabtai (or Shabsai in Ashkenazic pronunciation).

My religious school students copied the names and dates on the memorial plaques in the synagogue.  I remember that there is a push to record this information somewhere.  Can somebody tell me what group collects that information and how I should send the data to them.

·       Miguel Levinoff, married, coppersmith, 27 years old, from Vakum, Russia, resident at calle de Guajardo 37 (or something similar)

·       Birth on November 4 of a girl, Margarita Levinoff

·       Mother Aida Bosques, 17 years old, from Cuba,

·       The baby is a granddaughter of Jorge Levinoff and Ana Kuik (?) , deceased and of Juan Bosques (40 years old) and Ana Bosques , 35

Hi Leya,

This is the birth certificate registration for Margarita Levinoff, born on Nov 4, 1938 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to Miguel Levinoff, 27, originally from Vakum (?), Russia and his wife, Aida Bosques, originally from Cuba, married, 17 years old.
Miguel's parents, both deceased, were Jorge Levinoff and Ana Kuik.
(On the left side, is written Miguel's immigration file number: 82113.
Miguel & Aida's address was: Calle de Guajardo 37, if I can understand correctly the handwriting.
Not a literally translation, but the main points.
I hope it helps you in your research.

Census records show Louis is from Austria.  Citizenship application indicates from Germany - although records indicate Mamie was from Germany.

Suggestions - try to get actual Death Certificate

Did Louis have siblings? Did his parents come to US?  You can try searching records for those relatives - passenger manifests, marriage & death certificates. Marriage certificates give place of birth information, citizenship records

Hope this helps

I also am researching Pinkus ancestry. Grandfather Harry (Pinchos)  Pinkus born possibly in Sochachev Poland (near Warsaw) about 1888 and immigrated to US in 1912.. Brother Maier Pinkus was given as contact for a sister Esther Pinkus who immigrated to US in 1923. Father;s name was Wolf/Zev Pinkus. I know nothing about the family prior to immigration or what happened to Maier. Harry Pinkus married Helen Flam from Warsaw in US. Also looking for information on Flam's.

Re: The male name Shapsei #names #lithuania

Adam Turner

Shapsei (Shopsy, Shepsel, etc.) is a Yiddish form of the Hebrew name Shabbatai.

I have at least four Shabbatai/Shepsels on my tree. The generation they were born in probably influenced the names they went by in English.

The two born before 1880 both went by the name Samuel or Sam.
Another, born in 1903, was a Sidney.
The fourth was born in 1929 and at various times went by the names Salven, Selwyn, or Shep.

My father's Hebrew name was Shapsei, or Shopsy (after a great-grandfather named Shabbetai).  His given name was Charles but for almost his whole life he went by Shep.

Re: Why the name "Sylvester"? #names

BRENERDA@...

I can't tell you way but Sylvester in  my Levy family dates back to the early 1800 with a family from Koschmin, Pleschen, Posen, Prussia . Now, I believe is Kroroszyn, Powiat krotoszyfiski, Welkoposkie, Poland.  The Hebrew on the tombstone states birth at "Kashfein". It is Sylvester Louis Levy 1808 circa-1868 who is buried in Memphis. He, wife and 4 children arrived in NYC in 1857. Slyvester was used in three generations of his two sons. Its use died out with the last male in each brother's line.
