Barbara Zimmer has various STERNGLANZ mysteries to solve. She is particularly
mystified about Elias and Cecilia [variant spellings] STERNGLANZ who are very elusive. I hope this will help. Although I have yet to find Elias STERNGLANZ in Manhattan, I have found him and his brothers at home in Krakow [Galicia]. His parents were: Mojzesz Juda STERNGLANTZ dob {Sep 26, 1809} and Jachetta GOLDBERG/ELIASZOWICZ dob 1811-12 married 1834: Elias STERNGLANTZ [sic] was born in 1834; his brother Marcus in 1836 and Jakob in 1842. There was another brother Isaak born in 1850 who probably died in childhood. The whole family tree can be seen here: http://www.ics.uci.edu/~dan/genealogy/Krakow/Families/Sternglantz.html The tree starts in Krakow with Markus STERNGLANTZ 1754 (son of Abram Ickowicz 1722 + Gitel c 1740). You can also see Elias' birth on Jri-pl: STERNGLANTZ Elias 1834 B 463 718914 Here are more facts, gleaned >from the IGI index, about the three brothers who all emigrated to the USA: 1. Elias STERNGLANZ and Caecilia nee STERNBERG had a daughter Julie/Julia in 1876 in Manhattan; she married Isaac HARRIS on 18 Nov 1902 in Manhattan. The marriage certificate of Julie STERNGLANZ should solve the mystery of her parents' whereabouts. 2. Jacob STERNGLANZ and Rebecca nee BAUMGARTEN were the parents of another Elias STERNGLANZ dob 25 0ct 1881 [Manhattan] who can be seen by googling as an architect or property developer. He travelled on the Ile de France with Ethel in Jan 1956 and died in California in May 1965 {SSDI}. 3. Marcus [Marx] STERNGLANZ was married to Fanny WETTSTEIN. Their daughter Antonie was born on Nov 5 1869. She does not appear in the census of 1880, so sadly she probably died. Daughter Emma was born on 4 March 1875. She can be seen in the the census of 1880 as Emma STERUGLANZ. Her older sister, Henriette, married Joseph VORHAUS in Manhattan on 8 March 1898 There are obviously another STERNGLANTZ family in Krakow as a younger generation Max/Marx STERNGLANZ married Delphine Dey on 15 June 1884 in Manhattan and his father is given as Wolf Mayer STERNGLANZ and his mother as Malka Isaak. His place of birth is given as Frankan, Osterich which must be a transcription error for Krakow/Krakau. On 12 July 1899, Max STERNGLANZ and Delphine DEY had a daughter Malka. This seems an very long gap since their marriage. Note Malka is also the name of Max's mother. There is also Rose STERNGLANZ [born in Austria], daughter of Morris and Anna ANGLER who marries Adolf JUNKER in Manhattan on 3 June 1895. Sadly, there are many STERNGLANZ holocaust victims we remember here today. Many have POTs. Celia Male [U.K.]

More: When the Soviets allowed in tourists from Israel after WWII

HeyJudy123@...
As I said when I posted my first comment to the original query, if I'm wrong
in my theory, some other Digest participant is sure to let me know. Indeed, Peter Zavon has done just that. I had said, incorrectly it turns out, that the Soviets did not permit American tourists into their country during the half-century between their Revolution and 1967. Mr. Zavon points out that Lee Harvey Oswald went there in the early 1960s. According to Wikipedia, this is correct--but Wikipedia also says that Oswald went to the USSR with the desire to renounce his American citizenry and become a Soviet citizen instead. It strikes me that this probably took Oswald's visa application to the Soviets out of the realm of the ordinary tourist. Mr. Zavon mentions that his sister went to the USSR with an official delegation in 1977, which is ten years after the date that I recall tourism to the USSR resuming. This was a personal memory of mine, based on family events, rather than a researched fact; regardless, a trip in 1977 does not disprove my personal theory that tourism to that country >from western nations was not permitted until 1967. Anyway, I'm sorry for any confusion, but none of this discussion addresses the original query, which was whether tourists >from Israel were permitted into the USSR in the years following World War II. Seeking: RIEG Family

Yossi Steinblatt <ysteinblatt@...>
Dear Genners!
My mother's family was REIG. her father Mortko (Mordchai) was born in Chocin Galicia now Golyn in Ukraine. My grandfather and my grandmother were killed by the Nazis. My mother always told me that all her family was killed in the holocaust. When I began to make my genealogy research what I had was only a marriage certificate of my grandparents and I learned >from it where my grandfather was born and the names of his parents Leib-Kalman and Rivkah (Kammer). After making some research in the Jewishgen Databases and other sources I found out that Reig was a unique surname and all the Riegs are from the same origin. They used to live in Kalusz,Ivano-Frankivsk (Stanislawow)' Golyn (Chocin) and Novesiolo, all places are today in Ukraine (East Galicia before). The great surprise that I found out was that some of the Riegs immigrated to the U.S.A. in the beginning of the 20th century. One of them Abraham Rieg >from Chocin (maybe a cousin) immigrated in the year 1902. My question is: Does anyone know anything about the Rieg descendants in the U.S.A.? Please help me to find them. Hanna Steinblatt My E-mail: hanna_st@... MODERATOR NOTE: One of JewishGen's most heavily visited sites is the JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF) and family connections are being made more and more frequently. If you have not already done so, please log onto www.jewishgen.org/jgff and using the ENTER/MODIFY procedure enter and register all the surnames of interest to your family research. US citizens could visit Russia starting around 1952, I believe. PanAm flew
to Moscow in the '50's and an aoutfit called General tours, still in business, ran group tours there. One of my wife's aunts went to Ruissia about 1958 and an old friend went there in 1961. One of my Israeli cousins went, around 1959, when Krushchev was opening things up a bit; when she tried to visit relatives in Moscow she was turned away and told never to come back or contact them again. I'm told that in the early days Americans were a curiosity, and the stories of bugged hotel rooms and beiong followed by the KCB were true for the most part, but people, Jews included, were able to see the high spots even if they were not able to contact ordinary Russians very easily. And politics was never an issue if you kept your mouth shut. Finding an article in the Jewish Forward

I had a similar problem: trying to find an article in the Jewish
Forward about my immigrant grandfather's suicide in Chicago, an event that left his wife and three children penniless in a country they had emigrated to only 6 weeks before (grandfather had arrived a couple of years before). I knew the date of his death, but can not read Yiddish--the language of the Jewish Forward. However, I had heard >from family members that photos of the bereaved family accompanied the article. So I ordered the Jewish Forward microfilm on interlibrary loan through my own library (you can do this too!), identified the article by recognizing the people in the photo, photocopied the article, and--luckily--found someone to translate it >from the Yiddish. The article revealed a wealth of detail about the family's circumstances as well as identifying some relatives who lived in Chicago that I hadn't known about. Since you have a date range, I would urge you to order the microfilm on interlibrary loan and look at it with someone who reads Yiddish. Good luck with your research! --Best wishes, Laura Moss Gottlieb USA Searching for DANKER, Glazmanka/Dankere, Latvia; Liverpool, England; Chicago, Illinois; MOSS/MATKOVICH, Mogilev, Belarus; Liverpool, England; Chicago, Illinois; FRIEDKIN/FRIDKIN, Gomel, Belarus; Liverpool, England; Chicago, Illinois

For those researchers who have over the past weeks been using a site that is offering limited free access, always view the manifest page if you want to know the Nationality.
