The excellent advice below should definitely be followed, with the exception that "College Point" doesn't exist. Look instead for "College Park", which is also the site of the University of Maryland campus.

Barbara Evedon <nurseboo7@...>
My grandfather, Jacob PROPOS came >from Russia. That's all I know about his
place of birth. I have a great deal of information about him. I even have his naturalization papers, his marriage license to my grandmother and all the U.S. census' of all the years. I also found A passinger list record of Jtzig Propisohe, arriving on Aug.8,1888 when my granfather stated the year he arrived. The date of birth is correct, 1868 and he was 20 years old. The ship's name was the State of Georgia. I find this person but not the town. Does anyone have any suggestions? Barbara Evedon nurseboo7@...

No, this does not mean Farkas born Turk. The Hungarian language is a

Dear Language experts, stating that this female is the wife of Farkas Turk? Or would Farkasne be agiven name in its own right? Although Farkas is the accepted Hungarian form of the name Wolfgang, it is a relatively common family name. It actually means wolf. As for the name you have there, the suffix -ne indicates married name, being a derivative of the French _ne'e_, meaning _born_. It is a Hungarian custom for people to use both their married and maiden names the way it appears in your post. So in your case Farkasne Turk means: Farkas, born Turk... her given name should follow after that. Sarah Feuerstein Toronto, Canada

Dear Genners,The name of the place should, according your records, be Nagyhid. Yet my Google search for this exact spelling didn't come up with anything, either. On the other hand I found a Nagyhida being mentioned on this page: http://lexikon.katolikus.hu/LINKEK/LINKGGGY/06GYOGYS.HTML According to the above document Nagyhida was (is?) in Abauj-Torna county. So I checked out on this map: http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/abauj-t.jpg but he closest I found was Nagyida, which can theoretically be the right place, except it is not in Transylvania but Slovakia, and now it goes by the name of Velka Ida. tom klein <h-sig@...>
"Turk Farkasne" literally translates to "mrs. farkas turk" in english. (note that in normal hungarian usage, the surname is given first, as if it were an adjective.) i am more familiar with seeing "farkas" as a surname.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
"farkasne" would no more be used as a given name than would its equivalent "mrs. farkas" (or "mrs. charlie", etc.). ....... tom klein, toronto ps. "turk" seems like an unusual surname, as opposed to the more common version, "torok". (according to the 1891 trade directory at bogardi.com, there were 50 TURKs versus 423 TOROKs listed.)
