Recently I made a special trip to the federal archives at College Point, Md.
from New York City to search for the visa applications that are part of
Record Group 84. My understanding >from articles and >from JewishGen Discussion
Group Archives is that these records are organized by consular post, by year,
and by topic indexed under the State Department' s decimal system.
To my chagrin, the archivist who is supposed to be knowledgeable about RG 84
told me that since this record group was new, he was not familiar with it
and did not realize that it contained visa applications. He had no idea how to
locate the visa applications that I wanted to research. As the archivist
had no idea how to locate these records under the State Department's indexing
system, I had no other choice but to return to New York City empty-handed,
having experienced a nice, 24-hour railroad, Metro, and bus trip.
Genealogists who plan to travel any distance in order to research this
record group ought to make absolutely sure, before-hand, that the archivist at
College Point knows how to find the section of Record Group 84 that you are
interested in. You might not find the specific records you are researching, but
be sure that you have records to review. JewishGen does have a partial online
index of Record Group 59 which might help in researching RG 84.

I am trying to find testimonies, sources and /or pictures on Adas Ysroel
School in Berlin in the 30's. I have a short witness sketch >from a Shoah
survivor who was with his siblings a student in Adas Ysroel before 1939
(Dates of birth were: 1920, 1921, 1923 and 1929) All the siblings were
murdered in the Shoah, deported >from France.

My grandfather, Jacob PROPOS came >from Russia. That's all I know about his
place of birth. I have a great deal of information about him. I even have
his naturalization papers, his marriage license to my grandmother and all
the U.S. census' of all the years. I also found A passinger list record of
Jtzig Propisohe, arriving on Aug.8,1888 when my granfather stated the year
he arrived. The date of birth is correct, 1868 and he was 20 years old. The
ship's name was the State of Georgia. I find this person but not the town.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

No, this does not mean Farkas born Turk. The Hungarian language is a
Finno-Ugric language that has nothing whatsoever to do with French
and is not related to any central European languages. (It is,
however, related to Finnish and Turkish.) Turk Farkasne means Mrs.
Farkas Turk. Hungarians state surname first and then given name.
The suffix "ne" after a given name means Mrs. XX.

follow after that.

The name of the place should, according your records,
be Nagyhid. Yet my Google search for this exact
spelling didn't come up with anything, either. On the
other hand I found a Nagyhida being mentioned on this
page:

According to the above document Nagyhida was (is?) in
Abauj-Torna county. So I checked out on this map:

Transylvania but Slovakia, and now it goes by the name
of Velka Ida.

"farkasne" would no more be used as a given name than would its equivalent "mrs. farkas" (or "mrs. charlie", etc.).
