Dear freinds,
Thank you, good people, for helping me with the issue of Jews deported >from France. I was astonished getting 12 mails only one day after my mail. And to another issue: My grandfather,Julius Hamlet b.1880 served in the German Army in WW1,while living in Hamburg,where my father was born,1914. I never knew my grandfather,who fled to England,1939,and died there 1945. I have only pictures of him as a soldier but know nothing about his service in the German Army. I wrote two days ago: <The first known member of the family was Mousche BUTTGE
of Wetzlar, Germany {1734}. The name was changed to BUDGE in 1815, by Moritz [Henry's father], who was born in Wetzlar on 15 April 1802 to Salomon BUTTGE [Henry's grandfather].> I puzzled about this overnight and have rechecked the data. On the website <http://tinyurl.com/yxrm4z> indeed it says: 1802 Salomon's son Moritz was born on 15 April in Wetzlar 1815 Moritz BUTTGE goes to Frankfurt und changes the writing/spelling of his family name to BUDGE. 1816 Moritz BUDGE starts to work with the company M. B. RINDSKOPF [share dealers/traders]. It does seem strange to me that a young German boy of 13 changes his name from BUTTGE to BUDGE in 1815. This does not seem like a German name or word and most would assume it was an anglicized version of BUTTGE. However, apparently the name change had nothing to do with Henry who travelled to the USA for the first time in 1866. Is possible that this is how the name BUTTGE was pronounced in that region, so that young Moritz thought he would render it into a phonetically correct version? The spelling can be wrong, of course, but I can not imagine any town name in Courland with similar spelling also. Maybe it is a spoiled name of a village or a manor. Courland Jews sometimes lived in such small places. The letter "y" exists in Lithuanian and Polish languages, and the word Nyra sounds slightly Lithuanian, so it would be advisable to check Lithuanian regions, if it seems plausible. Sincerely. I have just receive three certificates >from Beth Hatefutsoth and would be really grateful for any help anyone is able to offer with the translation of them, there are two birth certificates and a marriage certificate. As a good practice, it would be a good idea for the traveling researcher to call ahead to confirm hours of operation and availability of files.
