Zalman GUREVIC in Israel #belarus

MavAlan Shaffer <mavalan_shaffer@...>

Dear JGenners,

We are trying to trace our cousin Zalman GUREVIC and
his family in Israel.
The last address we have is:

Z. Gurevitch
Visotsky St., Tel Aviv

We believe the connection is that he is the nephew of
Simon Gurevitz(sp?) who emigrated to London >from Minsk
early in the 20th Century.

Visits and correspondence were exchanged with my
cousin Lou Gordon (son of Simon) and his family (of
Brighton, Sussex) in the latter part of the 1900s.

Any information would be very much appreciated.
With thanks.

Shalom,

I am doing research for a friend whose LERNER family came >from Briceni, Moldova.
125 miles/200 kilometers NW of Chisinau

His father was Chaim LERNER (born circa 1880's) ben Nachum. I believe Nachum's
father was a Rabbi in Briceni. The Rabbi's other children include, Mordechai,
Leizer, Rose and Mary. I do not know the Yiddish names of Nachum's sisters.

Nachum eventually settled in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Rabbi may have also had a niece named Sarah, who married George
HANDELMAN. They lived in New York.

If anyone is familiar with this family, please email me privately.

Thank you,

Dear Genners,

Any suggestions on how to enlarge the document found on the left side of the
information. I click "enlarge on Photo" and I all I see and can print is a
1/2" "swiggle".

I have successful enlarged and printed the Information Sheet in the past.
The information is a link to our past. I contacted another person who has
the same problem.

Could you email me privately with any suggestions as to how to correct this.

Thanks so much,

I am working on a Solomon LEWIS family tree that has only recently been
handed on. There is very little to guide the reader.

However, a recent email says:

"The person Mum thinks might help you is Wiggs ( nickname obviously) Hill. She
has a daughter called Rosemary who I believe worked for the BBC". This dates
from a meeting in London in 1970's
If this email makes any sense to listers, please make direct contact with
me. My GGM Matilda Lewis was born in London in 1845 and travelled to New
Zealand where she married Henry Solomon Meyers in November 1867.

Hope someone can help, please?

1) We shouldn't discount the ability of phenotypic selection to influence
such things. If Jews, adopting the aesthetic values of their milieu,
prefer taller, paler, and straighter hair in mate selection, even if this
amounted to less than 1% per generation, in 10 generations,
400 years, there would be some affect on the appearance of [some of] the
population.
2) Given all the pressures for conversion in the community, I would
expect to see more evidence of 'Jewish' genes in the gentile community
than the opposite. I think the story of Oskar Milasz, the French poet,
cousin of Nobel Prize-winner Czeslaw Milasz, is more typical than
gentile-sired babies in the Jewish community. Oskar's mother was the
daughter of a rabbi in a Lithuanian village. His father was a Polish
cavalry officer
in the Russian army. Riding through the village, their eyes met, he swept
her up on his horse, and rode off with her to marriage. It is possible
that she, like the Rothschild daughters married to English nobles,
privately
practiced Judaism on their estate, but their descendents are good
Catholics, no doubt.
Stephen Pinker, the psychologist had a long article in this Jewish New
Year's edition of the London Jewish Chronicle which was a wide-ranging look
at the psychology of being Jewish (very crudely as I don't have a copy to
hand).

He briefly touched on the subject of the difference between European Jews
and Gentiles - and as I recall he said that with a small amount of
intermarriage over the centuries there was very little difference between
the two groups genetically.

Maybe someone else has a copy of this recent edition and would have a look
at it for me?

Yiddish Theatre and Vadeville #YiddishTheatre David Pinski, Yiddish playwright and novelist #yiddish

Steven Lasky <steve725@...>

Greetings,

I would like to announce that I have put online a small exhibition about
David Pinski, one of the world's foremost Yiddish playwrights and novelists.
Included is a short biography of his life and work and two group
photographs, one in which he is seated next to Albert Einstein at the
Histadrut Third Seder in New York City in 1934. As a reminder, there is also
a page that I have previously published on my site that features the
translation of a prose poem written by David Pinski for the "American
Mercury" magazine in 1943 regarding the plight of the Jews in Europe.
The new exhibition, "Lives in the Yiddish Theatre: David Pinski" can be
found at www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/y-lyt-pinski.htm . There is also a
link to the prose poem on that page.

Lenin Belarus Yizkor Book and Cemetery Projects

LENIN YIZKOR BOOK PROJECT
I am kicking off a campaign to raise money to translate the remainder of the
Lenin, Belarus Yizkor Book. To date we have put on line under the auspices
of JewishGen's Yizkor Book Project English translations of the Hebrew and
Yiddish Tables of Contents as well as 4 articles, photos and their captions, and
the community register, a listing of those lost in the Holocaust. This work
has been done by volunteers. If you would like to see this work, go to the
following URL; http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/lenin/lenin.html .
If you are fluent (native) in Hebrew or Yiddish, have good English and MSWord
skills and would like to donate translation of one or more articles please
email me.
However if we are to get the remaining 225 pages translated in a timely
fashion we will need to hire professional translators through the Yizkor Book
Project. The total estimated cost is $8514. To get the project in motion I have
donated $500.00. If you would like to participate with a donation, the
procedure will be as follows:
If you would like to donate to this project and would like to have specific
articles translated, email me privately and I will send you by attachment a
schedule listing the articles in the Tables of Contents together with their
page locations as well as the number of pages to be translated and the cost of
translation for each article. Depending on the size of the article the costs start
at $20.00. You can then list the articles you would like to have translated,
total the cost and using the donation form linked to the Lenin URL above make
the donation of at least that amount of money to the JewishGen Yizkor Book
project. BE SURE YOU CLICK THE LENIN DONATION BUTTON TO ENSURE THAT THE MONEY
GETS ALLOCATED TO THE LENIN YB PROJECT. The Yizkor Book Project form states
that donations are tax deductible for American and Canadian citizens.
Once you have made your donation, email me with the amount of your donation
and the list of articles you want translated. Any money donated above the
amount to cover your articles will be used to translate any remaining articles.
We will translate articles in the order that donations are received. We may
accumulate articles to be translated to make it worthwhile for the translator.

LENIN CEMETERY TOMBSTONE TRANSLATION PROJECT

During the Belarus SIG meeting at the IAJGS conference in August it
was announced that a Lenin Belarus cemetery project was being started. This
project will photograph and translate 431 legible tombstones and wooden grave
markers and put the information on line. Some of these tombstones and markers
may be quite old and may yield significant information.
The initial proposals for four cemeteries were posted at
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?
so that funds could be raised. These projects are for the cemeteries
in Lenin, Novogrudok, Oshmyany, and Volozhin.
Read about the individual Lenin project by clicking on Belarus Cemetery-Lenin
where the scope of the project is described and the budget details are provided.
$1457 is needed for the Lenin cemetery project. This total must first be
raised for the project to move forward. To get the fundraising started I have
donated $200.00 (tax deductible). They need only $1257 more to unlock this
treasure trove!!
Please read the description of the Lenin Project and then contribute at
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=1.
The Cemetery Project and the Yizkor Book Project will extend our knowledge of
our roots
