Hi!

I want to correct about Rabbi Aryeh Leib know as the Shaggas Aryeh,
his family name was never Gunzburg, this error was made by the
author of "Toldos Mishpechos Gunzburg", even he corrected himself in
the second part of his book, the mistake stayed for generations till
the present. The Shaggas Aryey gave numerous approbations. He never
signed as Gunzburg, in none of his seforim, and none of the places
were he is mentioned [till 1897 when "Toldos Mishpechos Gunzburg"
appeared in print], his father was R. Osher, but not R. Osher

Seeking Info: Guido JACHCEL 1904 (Czech) -1994 Rhuddlan, Clwyd (Walse) #austria-czech

Eli Rohn (Yahoo) <elirohn@...>

Guido (also may have been spelled Quido) JACHCEL born in Czechoslovakia
(town unknown) on 14 Apr 1904 is listed as a Czech refugee in the UK in
1942. He passed on May 1994 in Rhuddlan, Clwyd, (Walse) UK. Per Ancestry.com
database his name appears in the British Phone Books 1880-1984 (I have no
access to that record)

Can anyone in Wales or elsewhere in the UK look up a current phone book and
see if there is any JACHCEL (or JACHZEL with a z) listed? If so, details
are appreciated.

Would someone with access to the ancestry.co.uk database look up the phone
record for me? (FYI - I have access to the death record). A print screen or
an image of the page would be nice to have.

Is there a way to find an obituary for Guido? It may have names of interest.

Is there a Wales or UK census between 1945 and 1994 that I could access
online to find out more?

Thank you,
Eli Rohn

How to Research in Grodno #belarus

didamike@...

Dear Belarus SIG,

I am confused about Grodno.
It has been a long time since I started research and I have been away >from
it for awhile. My ggrandfather Morris SMASON (could have been
SMASONOWITZ -or VITCH) was >from Grodno, b. 1862- 1913. I was told he was a
Polish Jew .

I once found some internet information about this and even a list of
possible matching ancestors. But those records are lost in a crashed
computer. Recently, when I searched online, I couldn't figure out where
Grodno is or was: Poland, Ukraine, Belarus or all of them? What is the best
way to do research online for Grodno? Where is this place of family origin
now? Are there different possibilities? Is there an online resource that
gives a historic timeline for the changes of nations?

Also, did this area have any connection at all with Prussia? The reason I
ask this last question is because my ggrandmother was born in Berlin, came
to US at age 18 & her native tongue was German, her English was almost
without an accent. Her family members all claimed different nationalities
on US census, including Russia. Though she may have been married a few
years after she came to US, I find it odd that in the late 1800's there
would be a union between a Polish and Prussian Jew. I could be wrong, but I
wondered if there were some cultural ties in Europe between Berlin, Prussia
and Poland. Anyone have some knowlege of this?

Thanks and best wishes,

Devick Surname #belarus

I am researching my husband's father's family. HIs grandfather and great grandparents immigrated to the US >from Bobruisk in 1895. I cannot find any record of them entering the US. I have tried passenger lists >from Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, Canada, and Ellis Island. They resided in NY so I don't think they arrived >from the west coast. I have found records of them in New York, but I cannot find their name in any of the databases in the jewish gen sites. It is very probable that Devick was not their name in Russia, but I cannot figure out what it might have been. I have tried so many soundex deriviatives, but none have worked in any of the US passenger lists. I am at a brick wall with this. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do at this juncture? I am a novice at genealogy research, so I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Victoria Reed <researchtoldot@...>

Hello Genners:

Well, there is something to be said for the "old days" when we were forced to
physically look through the census records for our families.

About ten years ago I somehow managed to find my grandparents and their
firstborn child in Queens in 1900. Joseph and Mary Rabinowitz (and he sometimes
went by Joe or John) were living there, perhaps for the summer, and although I
did not record it I seem to remember they were living out in Rockaway. I would
have thought this was odd except for having found Joseph's cousin in Corona
briefly several years before.

Their daughter Ethel, was written in as "Yetti" or "Zetti" and I finally
discovered her true birth year (as we all know, Jewish women seem to fudge their
ages by at least two years).

The point that I'm trying to make, albeit with all these details, is that try as
I might, I cannot rediscover the listing using the online index provided by the
company to which we all subscribe. I think I foolishly discarded ED numbers and
the other data that directed me to the specific page in the census for my family
members, thinking this information was no longer necessary with the advent of
the online indexes.

However, using the same index I recently looked up another family and I
miraculously discovered Ruben Israel indexed under the name

Robin BRAET

When I looked at the actual census, it clearly looks like Israel.

The moral of the story? Sometimes using the online index we have to be very
creative and check out listings that seem absurd; on the other hand, perhaps
we ought to make a list of people we can't find and make the trip to NARA.

Regards >from Folsom, California
