Henry BUDGE family history {was Hamburg Obituary of 1928}

Celia Male <celiamale@...>
Dr Neil Rosenstein [N.J.] asks: <Looking to obtain the Obituary of Henry BUDGE
who died in Hamburg Oct. 20, 1928. He was a member of the New York Stock Exchange for over 40 years and left in his will $1 million. Did he have issue?> If you can read German, you will find a complete timeline and genealogical details of Henry BUDGE here: http://tinyurl.com/yxrm4z The first known member of the family was Mousche BUTTGE of Wetzlar, Germany. [1734]. The name was changed to BUDGE in 1815, by Moritz {Henry's father}, who was born in Wetzlar on 15 April 1802 to Salomon BUTTGE [Henry's grandfather]. Heinrich [Henry] was born on 20 November 1840 - he was one of seven siblings, the son of Moritz BUDGE and Henriette ADLER [daughter of a rabbi]. Henry and his wife Emma Ranette LAZARUS, born 17. Feb. 1852, married in 1879. "Die Ehe bleibt kinderlos" ie they had no children. Emma LAZARUS came >from Hamburg, whereas Henry was >from Frankfurt. The couple eventually retired to Hamburg. They had an opulent house there [Budge Palais]. In 1909 Henry built a room of mirrors for his wife's birthday present in which many famous performers appeared inc. Enrico Caruso and Paul Hindemith. Henry's first trip to the USA took place in 1866. Henry and Emma Budge were great philanthropists [to Jewish as well as Christian charities] and academic institutions. Prof. Peter KAHN, USA, provided biographical details in 1986/87. He is a great- nephew of Henry BUDGE. I presume there is a large family tree - perhaps in the Leo Baeck Institute? Celia Male [U.K.] Footnote: see also [in German] http://tinyurl.com/y23rqd and http://tinyurl.com/y3cpvx for an extended history of the Musikhochschule in the Alstervilla {History of Budge Palais} by Zenon Mojzysz. In 1959, the Hochschule fur Musik Hamburg officially moved into the Budge-Palais. |

I have a question about 2 tombstones. The husband and wife died in the very
early 20th century and are buried in Esztergom (now western Slovakia, then Hungary). The tombstones read for both - hebrew name of deceased and then son of (or daughter of) with the MOTHER's hebrew name. The father's hebrew name is totally omitted. These two people were blood related. The wife's father was the half brother of the husband. Both were >from legally married unions. Even if nobody knew the husband's father's name at the time of his death, the husband would have had that information for the wife who predeceased him. Someone suggested that putting the mother's name on the tombstone instead of the father is a Sephardic custom. Any thoughts? Thank you Debbi Korman Portland OR korman3@... |

The story behind 520 lecturers and 2,430 lectures in KZ Theresienstadt 1942-1944 Verba Publishers Ltd. Jerusalem, Israel, 2004. Hard-cover. 560 pp., 320 illustrations. ISBN 965-424-049-1. http://www.sharat.co.il/lel/terezin/first.htm The list of lecturers is given here: http://www.sharat.co.il/lel/terezin/list.htm On the home page, you will see the programme for 12-18 June 1944. I could comment, but any comment is superfluous and too painful. Celia Male [U.K.] Footnote: this is a one-time mention. I have no interest in this book, other than an academic one [statement to conform to Jewishgen rules]. I am sure, however, I/we will consult the list of lecturers again in our Austria-Czech research work. |

Tomer Brunner told us about this website: www.pheip.org/search.asp
and suggested contacting Generali in Israel. I contacted Generali in Trieste re my Viennese uncle's confirmed insurance policy. At first they denied any evidence of relationship and then they wrote that as he was married to my mother's sister who predeceased him, I was not eligible as I was not in the direct line according to Austrian law. So there you are. The money remains where it is, as there are no direct descendants - my uncle and aunt were childless. If ever there was a case for latitude, this is it. By the way these problems are best aired on a dedicated discussion group: Holocaust Era Restitutions Discussion Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/h-justice The founder and Moderator is none other than Austria-Czech and Hungarian Sigger Tom Venetianer [Brazil] who has worked very hard for many aspects of Jewishgen. I doubt there is much in this insurance policy [my uncle was a junior doctor in Vienna at the time, who then started again in the USA], but it was a matter of principle. I also found my great-uncle's name on the Austrian Postsparkasse account list [PSK]. I got a token 100 Euro for that plundered account. When it was handed over to me in person, I burst into tears - Leo WOTTITZ had died in Theresienstadt and although I never had the pleasure of meeting him, I could "hear" his sarcastic comments. I recently found his brother Ernst had another obscure Austrian Postsparkasse Overseas account. I expect I will get enough for "wurstl", when that finally is settled. The link to these archived PSK accounts is on our own website: Beginners Guide to Austrian-Jewish genealogy: http://www.jewishgen.org/austriaczech/ausguide.htm#Postsparkasse H. Postsparkasse Report The Austrian Postsparkasse bank has published a report on assets held by Jewish Austrians that were taken by the Nazis. The entire list of account-holders is available on the web at http://www.psk.co.at/pskgruppe/report/index.html (archived version). BTW I know of others who have received unexpected *large* windfalls - so don't give up, but join h-justice for advice >from those who have first-hand experience. Celia Male [U.K.] |

As a result, all orders from these indices must be submitted before that date.Contact me ASAP for more information about this file.
