I believe the correct name for the street with the synagogue is
Sandy's Row; however Sandys Row is widely used. It is now a quaint historic street; 100 years ago it was regarded as squalid. John Poulton is recorded as POULTON on the GRO marriage index. It was not unusual for couples to give the same address on marriage certificates; I wouldn't draw any conclusion >from this. The family is certainly confusing. On the 1881 census, Harris Holrie is listed as Deaf and Dumb. His wife was recorded as Eva. On the 1891 census there is no record of a handicap for Harris but a daughter Caroline (33) is listed as Deaf and Dumb. Harris's wife is listed as Hannah. Harris Holrie died in the December quarter of 1903 (GRO Index). If Hyman (grandson, 1881 census or son, 1891 census) was born in Warsaw in 1878 and moved to England with the whole family, it would appear they moved to England between 1878 and 1881. The Jewish East End Celebration Society, which can be found at
www.jeecs.org.uk, lists Sandy Row Synagogue as one of the remaining synagogues in the East End. While a number of synagogues have become mosques, Sandys Row is not one of them. My wife's maternal grandparents were married there and her paternal ggf had a pub around the corner at 17 Artillery Street (the address no longer exists). Two of her aunts were married to the sons of the minister of Sandys Row Synagogue, Rev. Bronkhurst. Lewis Stein Boynton Beach, FL

In late May, on a visit to Chernivtsi, Ukraine, I was called out of a meeting
with the words, Someone >from the U.N. wants to speak with you. Wondering what I had done to disturb world peace, I went to the lobby, where I met Doug Hykle. Born in western Canada, Doug has roots in Tluste (now Tovste, Ukraine, 48=B051' 25=B044', about 50 miles south of Ternopil, in what was eastern Galicia) and has been employed for many years by the United Nations in Bangkok, Thailand. Recently he came full circle, when he bought himself a little fixer-upper (in Tovste) a house that has been in his family for 200 years. Thanks to a remarkable coincidence, he learned >from a hotel tour guide of my interest in the village as my husband's grandfather was born there. He came looking for me. Doug, whose family is not Jewish, has been researching the history of Tovste for several years and is about to launch a website for the town. He has studied in depth the town Jewish history and sites, which will be prominently featured on the site, and is familiar with archival sources for the region. Back in May, Doug was interested to hear about the Jewish genealogy conference in New York and picked up the pace of work on his website, in case he could manage to join us and introduce the site here. And he will: Doug wrote last night that he just bought a ticket and is about begin his 8,500-mile flight to New York. Susana Leistner Bloch, coordinator of the Suchostaw Region Research Group, has graciously invited Doug to give a brief presentation about his research at the SRRG meeting -- Wednesday, Aug. 16, 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. in the Herald Room (seventh floor). Members of the SRRG are researching towns in the Austrian administrative districts of Borszczow, Buczacz, Czortkow, Husiatyn, Skala, Skalat, Tarnopol, Trembowla, Zaleszczyki, and Zbaraz. Some of the shtetlach included are Budzanow (Budanov), Chorostkow (Khorostkov), Grzymalow (Grimaylov), Kopyczynce (Kopychintsy), Jablonow (Yablonov), Jagielnica (Yahil'nytsya), Jazlowiec (Pomortsy), Jezerziany (Ozeryany), Mikulince (Mikulintsy), Podwoloczyska (Podvolochisk), Potok Zloty (Zolotyy Potik), Probuzna (Probezhna), Romanowe Siolo (Romanove Selo), Suchostaw (Sukhostav), Tluste (Tovste), Touste (Tolstoye), Ulaszkowce (Ulashkivtsi), and Wygnanka (Gorishnyaya Vygnanka). While Marcia Kaplan, the Galicia list moderator, is attending the conference, I will continue to moderate the list as time permits due to my family responsibilities. I am about to become the grandmother of twins any day! Please do your best to limit your messages to research and families in Galicia. I hope that all going to the conference will have a wonderful and productive time in New York. Pamela Weisberger and Eden Joachim have planned exciting programs for the Galicia luncheon and SIG meeting. Don't forget to wear your Galicia tee shirt on Monday Aug 14 to the luncheon and SIG meeting - a sea of blue shirts will be most impressive! Tee shirts will be available at the luncheon and SIG meeting. Leon Gold, Membership Chair, and Sylvia Gordon, Treasurer, will be on hand to accept new and returning members. Have a great time! Dear Friends,
If you have relatives who are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Queens, New York, in the Chevra Gomle Chesed Ansche Drohobycz & Boryslawer Society plot, you will be happy to learn that the photos of the Matzevot have now been added to the JOWBR data base. This data base is accessible >from the JewishGen site. We are grateful to David Priever for taking all the photos of this landsmanshaft plot. Virtually all photos are easy to read. And, we are grateful to Nolan Altman for doing the behind-the-scenes technical work in order for the photos to be added to JOWBR. Drogobych/Drohobycz and Borislav/Boryslaw are currently part of western Ukraine, formerly eastern Galicia. We welcome all researchers to the BDSandV (Boryslaw, Drohobycz, Dobromil, Sambor, Stary Sambor and Vicinity) Birds of a Feather Meeting in New York City, Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, 1:15 - 2:30 p.m., Brecht Room, Fourth Floor, Marriott Marquis Hotel. Organized Searchers of Mile End/Tower Hamlets?

Dear Moderator: I am sorry to have caused the staff any time or problem in regard to my email re Mile End/Tower Hamlet searchers. As sometimes happens with the selective nature of 82-year-old-eyes I had not read the Moderator notice attached to the email, warning of the consequence of incorrect subject matter and doodads at the bottom which should be erased. (I still don't know what the "doodads at the bottom of the email page" are.) But I think I get the gist of your request and it certainly is reasonable considering the volume of emails you must receive. I will try to read more comprehensively in the future. And I do appreciate the service that JCR-UK provides to all of us hungry amateur genealogists out here in cyberspace. skylark2000@... = 8-8-06 =2E...Has there ever been -or is there currently -- any organized group = of "searchers" in the JCR-UK that are descendants of the Mile End/Tower Hamlets? My father was born there together with his 5 brothers and at least 1 sister, and my grandfather lived there with two minor children after my grandmother died, according to the census of 1901. But to date I have no information other than the brief information in the 1871 and 1901 censuses. I know there were many many relatives who left for other areas and it would seem reasonable that they would have information to fill in the terrible gaps in my family history. I know that 4 of the brothers and 1 sister all migrated to Canada and the United States early in the 1900's. I also have family history in Gravesend, Kent that goes back to the late 1700's. And possibly there are still two remaining Eversfields still living in Gravesend. I have now reached my 80's and am becoming increasing frustrated by my inability to complete my family history for my great great grandchidren. Thanks for any information "out there." skylark2000@... Having spent many years trawling through handwritten documents such
as censuses and wills, I have found it is easy to mis-read the given name 'Morris' as 'Harris'. Even when I know the name should be Morris I have often seen it transcribed as Harris. It might be as well to remember this important point. I wonder how many Harrises there are whose Hebrew name was Mordecai. June Solntseff, in Canada. HART, WOOLF, JOEL

In the June 2005 issue of the Latvia SIG newsletter, we published an article
by Evelyn Waldstein about the Bauska Holocaust Memorial and the plans to make the memorial a reality. I am happy to report that the plans to build the memorial have now moved forward, and I'd like to share with all of you Evelyn's description of the progress made. "Last summer the Latvia SIG published our article about our intention to erect a Memorial in Bauska to commemorate the 1942 annihilated Jewish community of this city. It was designed to be erected at the empty plot of the former Bauska synagogue which belonged to the Jewish community of Bauska. We described difficulties unexpectedly encountered >from the side of a Riga Duma member who as leaser of this plot insisted on his rights. We are happy to inform you and those who read our article that at the end of July we were informed that under heavy pressure the leaser gave in. We expect in few weeks the deed to be registered in the Land Registry. >from this point on we intend to accelerate our activities in order to meet the summer 2007 deadline. The Bauska memorial, designed by the well known Riga architect S. Rizh, is to have the form of a large broken Magen David with a number of black marble stones nearby with names of Jewish families who lived in Bauska before WW2. The bilingual headings are going to be in English and Latvian plus a short inscription in Hebrew. We lost more than three years in fighting for the plot and need to spread the good news among people of general interest in commemoration of holocaust victims and especially among those with specific genealogical links to Bauska and its surroundings. With many thanks for your interest and help, Jehuda Feitelson (jehudaf@...) Evelyn Waldstein (evewa@...) Miryam Yankelowitch (miryamya@...)
