JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen NY death certificate - 1951

Israel P
Although I am in NY for the Conference, getting to the records offices
is not on my list of things to do. But if someone is there and has the time (and inclination) there is something that I am looking for. There is absolutely no urgency here and I am prepared to assume what it says there even without the certificate. I do not know the borough. But the story itself is interesting, so let me tell it. Friday my son and I were at Beth David Cemetery and quite unintentionally we stopped in front of a large family stome with a collection of small stones in front of it. The stone that caught my eye was for Kopel. As it happens we have a Skalater named Devorah Pikholz bat Haim HaLevi, who married a man named Kopel with this same surname and went to the US. They had a son and a daughter but no grandchildren and no one knows anything further. So next to this Kopel was Devorah Gitel bat Haim HaLevi and next to her a married daughter with the inscription "aunt." Not far away was a son with the inscription "brother." I am prepeared `to invoke "beyond`reasonable doubt" and record this as our missing couple, but the woman's 1951 death record, showing her mother's maiden name would complete the evidence. met with its President, Nahman Salic (Salic is the surname). Nahman does not speak English and relied on a translator. I did not visit either the synagogue or the cemetery in Baia Mare. Nahman's son lives in Cambridge, MA and, only two weeks after my visit to Satu Mare, I was able to visit him and to see Nahman, again, along with his wife (who does speak English quite well and is a Hungarian speaker). They were here for a visit. I can't recall whether Nahman speaks Hungarian, he was not a Baia Mare native, but I'm guessing that he does. It is my understanding that Nahman's organization is responsible for maintenance of all cemeteries in Baia Mare county. My interest was in the cemetery in Seine (Szinervaralja). It's newer section is "not too bad," but the older section--the one I cared about--was horribly overgrown and in poor condition. As for the Baia Mare cemetery, I checked my diary and here is what I wrote: "He (Nahman) did claim that there were no cemetery records, but also indicated that there is a plan to catalog and translate the stones." I believe that this comment applied to the Seine cemetery, however. There are very limited funds available to maintain the Jewish cemeteries in Romania. I was told that all funds for the Jewish Communities are funneled through Bucharest and that distribution to the Transylvania region is not generous. As the Transylvanian Jewish population continues to shrink, I suspect that this will only worsen. The cemetery situation is very sad, but, frankly, "natural." It's one repeated around the world, throughout history. Once the local Jews are gone (in this case), the only people interested in these sites are those of us who still feel a connection to the "old country" of our parents/grandparents. After the passing of one or two generations, that interest will wane, as well. In reality, these cemeteries are now "archealogical sites in the making" for it's hard to believe that either Jewish or Romanian goverment money will be available to care for the dead, as long as the living have needs not fully met. Eventually, even the locations of many of these cemeteries will be forgotten--some of the cemeteries I visited are not visible >from any street and only the caretaker or, perhaps, an old-timer knows where they are. Here, in Massachusetts, at least once or twice a year there's a story in the papers about the discovery of an old burial ground that had been used in the 1700s or 1800s but forgotten, only to be discovered when excavating for a new building. I guess this is part of what Walt Disney's organization calls, "the circle of life." My advice: travel to these regions as quickly as possible. While there may be short-term improvements in the maintenance of these synagogues and cemeteries (this was the case in both Satu Mare and Seine--their cemeteries were being cleaned up during my brief visit!), the long-term trend, is not favorable. One thing that was especially sad, was seeing old prayerbooks, moldy and rotting, stacked up in two or three of the under-utilized synagogues I visited. Unlike the cemeteries, these could be more easily saved and conserved, but there seems to be little interest or resources to do so, and I suspect that it is too late. I had the sense that the Jewish Community in the Romania I visited really has just two missions: facilitate aliyah to Israel for the "young" and care for the aged until they are dead. As with the Yiddish language, the "job" is it's almost finished. It's very sad. Except, perhaps, in the largest cities, these countries have been "cleansed." What condition is it in? Are the cemetery records still extant? Many of the Jewish vital records for this town have been destroyed so I am attempting another angle. Your help would be appreciated.
