There was a death notice in the JC archives for John PARKER, 64, the
brother of Isaac, Mark and Solomon Parker, who died on 28 Dec 1896 of
heart disease in Wilmington, DE. The Delaware State Archives have no
record of the death. John was my wife's great uncle and I am trying
to find information about him, why he was in Delaware, how he died
and where he is buried.

Hello John,

I have this kind of theory which I hope might help you. People like to connect
somehow, to *home*. Things that give them a good feeling of some sort.

Let me try to explain. My father, although not a Cohen (actually a Levi) was
born Michael COHEN in Scotland but grew up in Leeds, UK. During WW2 he decided
to change his surname - which some of his 5 brothers had done. Three changed to
Conway, one to Cowan, and because he had been born in Scotland, he changed to
his name Michael CONWAY SCOTT. He still wanted to feel connected to his
brothers (CONWAY), and his *country of birth* (Scotland) was important to him.

Your grandfather also *played* this game. >from Levin he went to LeVinge - the
question is, what does the GE signify??????????? Could it be an abbreviation
of a town in France? Taking a very quick look on Google/France/Hotels, I find
there is a place called Gerardmer. You might want to pose this question to
JewishGen: Is there a town/area in France with the abbreviation GE?; like
WA = Washington.

Regarding 'An old family letter >from an aunt states that my Grandfather used to
say "his family was of Royalty when Peter the Great was a goat herder". " I'm
inclined to believe that this may merely be a Yiddish type _expression; but I
also agree with Ida Schwarz that he was most likely >from the tribe of the Levis.

Hope to have given you some insight and help.

I am engaged in the rather hopeless task of locating my Grandfather in France or
Russia. He used the name Nathan Boris Levin while in NYC, in 1912 added GE to
the name and said he was French? I grew up being told he was French Catholic...
but now my DNA tests point to a Jewish Ashkenazi heritage?

An old family letter >from an aunt states that my Grandfather used to say "his
family was of Royalty when Peter the Great was a goat herder". Assuming there is
some truth here and he was Russian and Jewish, under what circumstances could he
be >from Royalty at the time of Peter the Great?

I've just received information >from the Red Cross concering my
great-grandfather. In their research, they consulted several archival
documents that puzzle me. One is the "Lists of Electors to the Council of
the Jewish Religious Community" in Lviv. Were these religious men? What
was an elector? What was the function of this Council? My g.grandfather is
listed here as a "clerk", but what little family story there is often
described him as an intellectual or a rabbi.

Also, there is mention of the "Metrical Books of the Jewish Community",
documents that were unfortunately not preserved for the village/region where
my g.grandfather lived. What does "Metrical" mean?

Last, the "Ghetto Card Index" for Lwow, was also consulted, although no
listing for my g.grandfather was found. What exactly was this? If he lived
in Slobudka Lesna in the Kolomya region, would he be listed in a ghetto
index for Lwow?

Ultimately, I'm trying to piece together the fate of my g.grandparents and
their daughters. The story goes that they were sent to Auschwitz, but
neither the Red Cross or I can seem to find any trail of them after 1937.

Thanks for any help.

Hello All

I am seeking a volunteer who may already be going to the municipal
archives, in hope that they can do a lookup for me. I am seeking copies
of all said previous forms filled out before a perons got married. I
read an article that said the years before 1929 records of "Affidavits
& Marriage Licenses's" are located in Manhattan.

I am seeking those said records on my great-grandparents, and I would
gladly reimburse you for your time and the cost of the records. I am
trying to find any clues to prove if they were both previously married.

If any one out there can help me please let me know.

Keller. A sister, who I think is still alive, lived in Israel. Her name was
Dr. Judy / Judith Torten. Michael attended U of Wisconsin and U of Arizona.
He taught at the college level. Any help locating a relative or friend who
knew about his family would be greatly appreciated. Please write to me

I am trying to find any Jewish relatives >from the area around Ashton Under

Thomas Green Born about 1854 His son was
John Green Born 1880 Ashton, His son was
Arthur Green Born in New York in 1910

I have some DNA information and will share. Most of the DNA matches were
not carring the Green name and only 25% were Jews. My Grandmother was
(Jewish) Vollenhover, >from England as well. Her Mother was Bertha
(Monis)Vollenhover who was a Mezo Soprano and sang professonally in the UK,
Netherlands, and US. We know they were Spanish Jews who migrated to
Holland and then to UK, then to US in late 1800's. Any inf would be appreciated

I would like to get in touch with Drs. Mike and Judith Torten. They live
somewhere in Israel. She is the sister of my deceased ex-husband Dr. Michael
D Keller of the USA. She is also the aunt of my recently deceased son
David Michael Keller of St. Louis, MO. She does not know that David has
died. I know that she and her husband once worked/ lived in Rehovot ( sp?
).. They were research scientist at one of the universities there. I would
guess that she is about seventy years old now. I do not know her husband's
age. They had two sons who I think were once top-notch sailors-- maybe
almost to the competing level. These sons would now be in their early
forties. Any help contacting them would be greatly appreciated. You can

Thanks for your various private responses.

I emailed the contact address at the National Archives.

The emailed response >from them contained the following:

"Please input any additional information into the white box found below.
Please note. It is _required_ to input what part of the document you would
like copied, otherwise, the system will not allow you to proceed." (my
emphasis)

In fact on the input screen it says Max 1000 chars - it should say Min 1
character!

I added a little comment - as I had already visited the Archive and seen the
documents I knew exactly what I would be getting and I had no additional
requirements.

I have commented to the Archives that they should make it explicit that this
field is mandatory.

Thanks again.

According to Rosenstein's "The Unbroken Chain" (ed. 1990 p.490) the
Admur of Krechnev was R. Meir ROSENBAUM whilst his father,
R. Mordechai Admur of Nadworna had the family name of LEIFER.

As I am trying to confirm a family tradition that my
gggreatgrandfather's family name was ROSENBAUM, and I have heard in
the family that some of my ancestors may have been close to this
chassidut, can anyone inform me how the change in family name came
about? Was the above R. Meir a son-in-law of R. Mordechai of
Nadworna and not a son as could be understood in "The Unbroken
Chain"?

Does anyone have a detailed family tree of this ROSENBAUM family,
specifically of the early 19th cent. and before?
