Kalmen KAPLANSKY - Canadian politican/human rights activist
Alyssa Freeman
Hi, all -
Does anyone have any information on the parents of Kalmen Kaplansky, the human rights activist? All the biographical information on him says he was born in Poland and immigrated to Canada when he was 18. I have him in my family tree because at least a half dozen other people do, as well, yet his parents in these trees are Abraham and Mollie KAPLINSKY from Minsk who came to the US before Kalmen was born. I can't find anything on who his parents were and he seems to be the only one in the family with the surname Kaplansky instead of Kaplinsky. This is all a red flag to me, suggesting that he's not related to me and all the others who've done the research before me were wrong. I can't find any historical records that mention his parents' names and he doesn't appear to be on JewishGen or Family Search. Can anyone help me out? Thanks. Re: Family name and town
#lithuania
Hi Marilyn,
Konigsberg (today called Kaliningrad) has a seaport that does not ice over in winter. So, the story of Dovid bringing groceries from Kovno to Konigsberg makes sense, if they were goods being shipped out.
Port of Kaliningrad
You may want to research what records exist for Kaliningrad, and see if you can find anything on Max or Dovid.
Also, did Dovid stay there, or did he emigrate? For instance, if he came to the U.S. you can search for naturalization, passenger manifest, and other records which may lead you to an answer.
best regards,
Sherri Bobish

Re: Online Meetings
Zoom works surprisingly well, though if
you've got 100 people that might be an issue. I haven't been in a
meeting with more than about 12 people. They also have a payment
option integrated via PayPal so groups can continue to charge, and
meeting recording is an option.
It is a trying time for all of us and I appreciate your sentiments about staying at home to work on our genealogy. The idea poses a number of different questions as to how this would work. I would think, though, that the decision to make a meeting available to the wider genealogy community would be one made by each individual group in consultation with the guest speaker. Many groups use the speaker's presentation and access to a subsequent recording as a benefit of membership in that group. Also, many speakers, myself included, do not agree to recordings of any kind, for legal purposes. We are offered the opportunity to opt out of recording at the annual IAJGS conferences. There is a company that handles the recordings and there is a charge to purchase the recordings after the conference. I'm not a technical wizard but I would think that there would have to be someone willing to contact the various different groups and speakers and organize the presentations that are recorded or somehow be able to invite the wider genealogy community worldwide to participate in each virtual presentation at the time of the presentation. Seems like a large job to me. Perhaps I'm missing something here, but what would be the benefit to the JGS groups themselves if anyone could have access to the speaker's presentation for which the hosting group pays an honorarium? Would this be time limited or would it start a precedent that would continue beyond the pandemic quarantine?

FWIW, these cards do expire. As I am now outside of the state, I guess I'm out of luck.

There is a book for kids about a friend of my family who was transported when he was a kid. It's called "I Remember Singing" by Arielle Aaron. It is probably available on Amazon--it used to be, anyway. --

He lived in Israel (address in Hebrew script in picture, which I cannot read) Maybe he is still around or I can contact with descendants. Family in Argentina would like to be in touch. Re: Political Geography Question...
#israel
The designation "Jerusalem, Israel" has a geographic term "Jerusalem," and a political term "Israel." This form is widely used and appropriate historically for Jerusalem from 1948 to the present.
But if we want to strictly follow this geo plus political pattern in our genealogical database records, is the following accurate for other periods of Jerusalem's history?
Jerusalem, Mamluk Sultanate (for 1260-1516)
Jerusalem, Ottoman Empire (for 1516-1916)
Jerusalem, British Mandatory Palestine (for 1916-1948)
Jerusalem, Israel (for 1948-present)
I note that when entering a place name in a person's record in a Family Tree on the familysearch.org, the only valid form for "Jerusalem" is "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, Israel," which doesn't seem to be widely used outside of their database.
If there is no standard to this, then perhaps it would be acceptable to use just "Jerusalem" for all periods before 1948-.

Hello John,
Have you searched the National Archive Discovery Channel, there is a Naturalisation Certificate and the Application Papers for a for a Louis Bing from Hungary. The Application Papers will usually contain the names of his mother and father. Are you related to the Actor Douglas Byng who has a Wikipedia entry which says that he had an elder brother who had a lace factory in Germany. Regards, Michael Hoffman Borehamwood HERTS UK

Carol Skydell z"l
#JewishGenUpdates
I received a message this morning on the death of Carol Skydell, who passed away in hospice in Camarillo, CA on March 4. Along with Susan King, the founder of JewishGen, and Joyce Field, Carol was the third part of the early leadership of JewishGen as it moved from a bulletin board service to a mailing list, and ultimately to a full internet presence. Carol was VP of Communications and the first moderator of the JewishGen Mailing List. I worked closely with Carol when I started my long affiliation with JewishGen, first as a moderator in 1996. She will be missed. May her memory be for a blessing.
