I would like some clues on immigration records. I have tracked down some of
my connections through census, bmd's and naturalisation in the UK, but I have not made the links to their villages in Bohemia through immigration records. I have searched lots of the German sources, without luck. What next? Ann Jensen Hnilicek, Hnilicek-Warner, Lazarsfeld and Lazarsfeld-Warner, Lazarsfelt, Von Gerlach, Seligman (Leopold), Pinsenstein.

I will be traveling to Vilnius in May. I want to do some research on family members one generation earlier than those we currently have on the family tree. for those who have done this in Vilnius, do you reccomend hiring someone to do the work prior to arrival, or is it possible to just show up at the archive and be able to get some significant work done with a translator to help? >> Just walking into the archive, and expecting to obtain results, very rarely works. The records you need may not be available for a week or two. It is not like a library where you can go to the shelf and select a book to look at. You have to request specific records, and in time, those records will be brought to you in the archive reading room. There is very little time left before you arrive at the archive in May. Contact a researcher in Vilnius NOW, give them the information you already have, and tell them what you hope to accomplish. Be sure and tell them the date you will visit the archive. If all else fails, go to the archive anyway. You may get lucky. If nothing else, you can make arrangements for the research to be done and the results sent to you later. JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Correcting transcription errors on the Ellis Island Database
#general
D. Abrams <dabrams1@...>
In case you don't know, the Ellis Island database has a user-friendly
feature that allows you to notify them when you believe a name or other passenger information has been transcribed incorrectly. Not only is it simple, but I've learned >from other Genners who used this feature that corrections were made within a reasonable period of time. When you find that a name of a passenger, town etc. was misread or mistyped, go to the Passenger Record page of the passenger in question and click on the box indicating : "If you believe there are transcription errors in this data, please send us your suggested corrections." This creates an email addressed to contactus@... prefilled with the current passenger data. All you need do is add the data you believe to be correct and it's ready to go. According to the EIDB, they will "check [your suggestions] against the original manifest and change only those that resulted >from errors in transcription. No changes can be made to the information contained in the original ship manifest which is a historical document and part of the federal historic record." So here's your chance to correct those vexing typos and other mistakes we've all encountered. I just sent off a batch of requests (BOBKSR to BOBKER and several others). D. Abrams

Lisa Lepore <llepore@...>
I received a personal message, suggesting I might provide some
technical help to people who are having problems with blocked mail. I know this board is not the place to discuss technical and software issues, but sometimes the 2 go hand in hand, so I will offer this information anyway because I have no idea how to reach the affected people and provide any further help. I wrote my initial message because there seems to be an underlying negative tone to some of the messages on this topic implying that the people who are blocking messages are doing this on purpose, and they are just wasting everyone's time. I disagree. I think the reason this happens is because these people do not understand the technical aspects of the spam filters on their systems. I'm not a technology wiz, but I do try to keep up on developments which effect my own computer and the programs I use, and I have learned the following - Probably one of the better resources for people who are not knowledgeable about computers, but would like to take advantage of the enormous amount of information out there is http://www.rootsweb.com/~newbie/ That is the web page for the gennewbie list at rootsweb.com There is an associated mailing list where people can freely ask their computer questions and get answers without feeling foolish that they that they had to ask in the first place. The Newbies are both people who are new to genealogy, and people who are new to computers. Each internet service provider has its own version of a spam blocker, so the important point is this - Whenever the internet provider offers a new service, please read the technical information and the instructions on how to use it. Especially when this service involves blocking mail. Also, go to the website of the internet service provider, and access your email account >from there. When you do, you will likely see a mailbox called spam, or blocked mail or junk mail or something similar. Take a look in there to see what the service provider considers spam. **Do not** just empty this mailbox. Follow the instructions to remove those messages >from the junk email folder. Otherwise you will never receive mail >from those people, and possibly from anyone else using those service providers. If you do not understand the instructions or the service, call the technical help line of the company and ask someone there to explain it. That's what you pay for. If you joined an email list, and now want to unsubscribe - follow the instructions you received when you joined to properly unsubscribe. **Do not** report these messages as spam in your email program. Doing this causes the mail list server to be recognized as spam by your ISP and their messages will not be delivered to anyone who uses the same ISP as you. Read the Jewishgen faq page http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/faq.html there is a section there on computers and genealogy as well. Hope this helps someone, Lisa Lepore llepore@... Mendon, MA

Searching for Jacob JACOBSON

Sharon R. Korn <s.r.korn@...>
My great-grandfather Jacob JACOBSON immigrated to Brooklyn, NY, >from
Gargzdai, Lithuania, around 1899 and died between 1920 and 1930. Unfortunately for my efforts to identify his death record, he chose a very common name when he Americanized his original name of Jokel JANKEL or JANKELOWITZ. I have used the NYC Death Index and obtained death certificates of four different people who I thought were he. If anyone is interested in these, please contact me privately. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can identify his death record and place of burial? I have also called a couple of cemeteries which I have learned hold the remains of other family members. Sharon Korn San Diego, CA
