1891 NYC synagogue #general

Dear Genners,
I found the marriage record of Abraham HERMAN, son of Benjamen and Ester
MUNTAG and Tobe JOCHMEWITZ, daughter of Salem(?) and Ruda DIENSTAG on 31 January
1891. It lists them as both being >from Austria. They were married in
Manhattan (New York City on the certificate.)

The person performing the ceremony was Elias BISGEIER, Cantor. The "official
station" or congregation is a long name crammed into a small space. I was
wondering of anyone could shed some light on the name.

It reads: 1st Chevra(?) Bnei David Ansche Radomysh
75 Pitt Street
Date of Record: February 7, 1891

Also, because this congregation married them, does that shed any light on
where in Austria they might be from. Family lore says it was an arranged
marriage.

Thank you in advance,

Judi Gyori Missel

EHRLICH of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico #latinamerica

Jane Reifer <cluttercontrol@...>

Hello,

I'm new to the list and would like to ask if any one knows of a Julius
EHRLICH who immigrated to Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico in the early 20th
century (I think) >from Moravia or Hungary. Julius' father was Josef and his
mother was Anna ARNSTEIN of Moravia or Bohemia. He was one of 11 siblings,
but I think he is the only one who settled in Mexico. One of his brothers
(we think his name was Isaac) was Provost or Rektor at the University of
Vienna. Two of his brothers, Morris and Emil, settled in the United States
(Kankakee, Illinois and Tampa, Florida) and may have visited him.

Perhaps some of this sounds familiar?

Thanks for your time,

Solly ZUCKERMAN was knighted in 1956 by Queen Elizabeth, thus becoming Sir
Solly. It's rumored that Prince Philip asked at the ceremony "Why is this
knight different >from all other knights?"

Solly Zuckerman, became a Baron Zuckerman (1904-1993).
In World War II, his research for the British government included the impact
of bombing on people and buildings. Post-war he was professor of anatomy at
Birmingham University (1946-68). He was chief scientific adviser to the
Ministry of Defence (1960), and subsequently chief scientific adviser to the
British government (1964 to 1971).

Re: BONDI as a translation of YOM TOV (in Italy)? #general

Stan Klaff <stanklaff@...>

Bondi is not uncommon - a search of the White Pages in Italy reveal at least
at 50

Also Bondi Beach in Australia

BONDI is a not entirely uncommon surname in Europe among Jews, both Sfardim
and Ashkenazim. In Romance languages it means "good day," and was used by
Jews who were named YomTov

I just read that one Sandro BONDI, is the national coordinator for the
Forza Italia Party headed by recently defeated Italian prime minister Silvio
Berlusconi. Is BONDI a known name among Italian gentiles?

I am descended >from a line of YomTovs. There are many traces of names
similar to my family name, BERNET, that are associated with YomTovs in the
Middle Ages, in Provence, Spain and Italy and whenever there is a prompt, like
this, my quixotic heart muscle twinges a little.

Information on Italian Jewish Bondis, anyone?.
