A friend asked me to pose this question to the group - she travels
through Cotopaxi, CO several times a year and has visited a cemetery
there which houses what appears to be a mass grave and is labeled "Jews

from Russia" or something similar. Does anyone know what happened

here? Cotopaxi I think is near Leadville.

Town was also known by its other names: Pruzana, Pruzin, Pruzhani and a few
other Yiddish?Rusian and Polish spelling variations. Pruzhany was Russian
and Belarussian town name. Polish town name was Pruzana in Polesie Province,
and it was known as this during the interwar period.

Poland did not exist as the political entity till 1918. This region was part
of Russian Empire, but historically it was part of Poland, and became again

I commissioned Aleksandrys Feigmanis (a few years ago) to take
photos of the cemetery stones in the Jekabpils cemetery. I am happy
to report that I have scanned all the photos and they can now be
viewed online at

All you need to do is put in either a first name or surname and the
search engine will find the record. You will get hits in all
the cemeteries where the name appears.You need to click the hit that
brings up Courland because Jekabpils was in Courland.
If you then click "see full burial record" you will see the tombstone
and can zoom in and out and pan the stone. Some of the stones may not
be in a good condition but I am pleased that the majority have
writing that can be read.
We are very grateful to Aleks for doing the photography and to
Jewishgen for giving you the opportunity to view your ancestors
tombstones online.

interest to Austria-Czech members in the UK.

There will be a Seminar on Czech Jewish history at 2-4
followed by a workshop. The speakers will be Frank
Reiss, a Theresienstadt survivor, and Michael Heppner,
Research Director of the Memorial Scrolls Trust at the
Westminster Synagogue.

The day will end with a piano recital at 7.30 pm by
Bozena Steinerova; her concert is in memory of Erwin
Schulhof [see footnote] and includes works by
Schubert, Schumann, Janacek and Liszt.
