In my research into my great-grandfathers family and their emigration to
Philadelphia >from Manchester, I am becoming more and more baffled with each
day. I sure hope someone out there can help...

As far as my family knows and remembers, my great grandfather Wolf
EISENSTEIN was married to Fanny nee MALICKSON. They emigrated to
Philadelphia in 1896 >from Manchester (originally >from Bessarabia). According
to the 1900 Census, they had 5 children and had previously had 2 others that
didn't survive. Apart >from them being referred to in the Census as
Isenstein, all the facts confirm what my family has told me.

Now the fun part...

On the arrival record >from 1896 for Fanny (aged 31) and her 5 children,
there are two other persons listed - one a Married woman of 25 named "Sara
Eisenstein" and one another child named "Mohtel". At first I thought that
Mohtel was one of Fanny's two children who passed away, but I cannot confirm
this, nor can I rule out that he was the son of the mysterious Sara. I have
searched high and low in Census records to try and identify what happened to
Sara and Mohtel after arriving in the US, but I cannot find anything.

Now for the really confusing part..

I have managed to get a number of census/birth/death certificates from
Manchester UK - and despite the apparent difficulty that the UK registrars
had with spelling, the records still throw me for a loop due to the names of
the mothers shown:

1891 Death of Jacob
Father: Woolf Eisenstein
Mother: Sara Eisenstein
1892 Birth of Reuben (my grandfather)
Father: Woolf Ichinstein
Mother: Sara Ichinstein (formerly Melason)
1895 Birth of Solomon
Father: Woolf Isenstein
Mother: Fanny Eisenstein (formerly Levenstein)

1891 Census shows Wolf and Fanny (Chai Feige) with the same 5 children
shown in the Philadelphia 1900 Census as well as the Jacob that died
the same year.

OK, so how do I interpret this? All my US records show clearly that Fanny
Eisenstein (Hebrew Chai Feige) is my grandfather Reuben's mother - and that
her maiden name was in fact Malickson not Levenstein. Perhaps someone has
some thoughts..

Were the British clerks simply confused/misled and recorded incorrect info?

Could my ggf have had two wives - at the same time?

I have just been on a trip to Latvia, Lithuania and Belarus and during that
trip I had the possibility to do a lot of successful researches in the State
Historical Archive in Latvia. As I can read Russian Cyrillic handscript I
had no problems finding and reading records relating to my family. Among the
records I went through were the 1893, 1902 and 1909 family lists >from Cesis
(Venden), Latvia. These lists is supposed to list all the Jewish inhabitants
in Cesis in those years, even though I have figured out some people are
missing. The oldest ones of those lists, the one >from 1893, I got a full

that list so that others might find interesting information relating to

Finally I would like to comment the list a bit:

As you see the first Jew in Cesis seems to have been Shmuel Lipmanov
ROZENTAL who came there >from Kurlyand in 1840. In most places where I have
read about the Jews in Cesis it's always said the first ones settled there
in the late 19th century. Now I know that several families came there in the
mid 19th century.

Most of the Jews in Cesis originated in today's Lithuania, mostly in the
northwestern area, back then part of Kovno guberniya. Many families seems to
have originated in one certain shtetl, Okmyany (Akmene).

Not all the Jews of Cesis lived in the town of Cesis, some lived in smaller
villages and other settlements in the district of Venden (Vendenskiy uyezd).
I haven't tried to identify those smaller villages or the volosts
(communities of several small villages), but perhaps some of you know the
names of the places today!

Surprisingly many of the Jews in Cesis worked as glaziers. I wonder what
business they worked in. Perhaps they came to Cesis just to work in a
certain glass industry?

Finally I would like to comment the list a bit:

As you see the first Jew in Cesis seems to have been Shmuel Lipmanov
ROZENTAL who came there >from Kurlyand in 1840. In most places where I have
read about the Jews in Cesis it's always said the first ones settled there
in the late 19th century. Now I know that several families came there in the
mid 19th century.

Most of the Jews in Cesis originated in today's Lithuania, mostly in the
northwestern area, back then part of Kovno guberniya. Many families seems to
have originated in one certain shtetl, Okmyany (Akmene).

Not all the Jews of Cesis lived in the town of Cesis, some lived in smaller
villages and other settlements in the district of Venden (Vendenskiy uyezd).
I haven't tried to identify those smaller villages or the volosts
(communities of several small villages), but perhaps some of you know the
names of the places today!

Surprisingly many of the Jews in Cesis worked as glaziers. I wonder what
business they worked in. Perhaps they came to Cesis just to work in a
certain glass industry?

in German "Dubinsky". This is located in the Wenden areas, in the
Cesis greater borders.

Project. A few days ago I contributed the $100 that made the Keidan
birth records translated so far available to me. Olga Zabudoff
immediately sent me the records. I found new data about several
relatives I had known about and discovered the births of hitherto
unknown relatives. The birth records often include the first and last
name of the maternal grandfather - an invaluble information.

Using these, I was able to confirm the name of a gggf of mine, Pesach Levin,
which so far I only had an hypothesis about, based on the name of two of
his grandsons. This discovery is especially meaningful, as I know now
the names of all my eight Litvak great-great-grandparents, much of it
thanks to the All Lithuania Database.

By the way, contributing >from Israel is a bit complicated [due to the
high bank commission for a $ check, and the lack of a secure way to
contribute online by credit card]. Israelis who would like to contribute
securly by credit card are invited to contact me privately.

journaled extracts of vital records.

1. Does anyone have advice/experience with obtaining reliable honest
research >from someone on the ground in Poland who can examine/copy
registers/indexes for vital records for our family (3 surnames, plus
spelling variations, would be researched)? This would be for the pre-
War period for Warsaw perhaps back to 1900, and for the Kielce/Radom
area (Chmielnik) back to the early 1800s, and for Szczekociny (what
gub?) to the late 1700s and early 1800s?

2. Same question re LDS microfilm records? (Not sure how far back LDS
records go)

3. What web-available or other resource is there to show what of such
registers/indexes are available for what time periods for what towns/
areas?

Since research/transcription/translation involves Polish/Russian and
Cyrillic characters, etc., and experience doing this, I would like to
know how/where to find someone who is honest and with integrity, has
references, and can do the work quickly and reliably.
