Date

South Africa SIG #SouthAfrica 1924 F.A. Cup Final Date #southafrica

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

I want to thanks the hordes of people who responded to my inquiry regarding
the date for this match which turned out to be April 27, 1924 which was
played during the Empire Exhibition at Wembley Stadium. Several of the
people who responded found some match memorabilia which I hadn't thought to
look for which gave the date.

http://www.nufc.com/2005-06html/fac1924.html

I am still a bit puzzled as the date of my record in London is September so
it can't be for the relative who said he went to the game, but has to be for
his brother who is known to have arrived in South Africa in October, 1924,
from London.
Thanks again to all my great responders.

1924 FA Cup Soccer Final #general

HPOLLINS@...

The Cup Final was held on 27th April 1924.

Harold Pollins
---
Based on a family story, one of our relatives, Israel CHORITZ, attended the
1924 F.A. Cup Final Soccer Match at Wembly in London on his way from
Lithuania to South Africa. As this seemed unlikely as the Poor Jews'
Temporary Shelter Record states that he only stayed one day before
proceeding to South Africa, I wouldl like to confirm when the match occurred
exactly.

Does anyone know how to determine when that match occurred? The record I
have states that he was in London on September 24-25, 1924.

It is possible that once I learn the date of the match that it may turn out
that the record was actually for Israel's brother Samuel who travelled
around the same time.

MODERATOR NOTE: Thanks to Keith Martin, who also submitted the date
of the match.

Hello,

I am in need of help >from all of you. I am searching for a family with the
last name RUBIN. They immigrated >from Shedrin, Russia (now Belarus) about
1908 and settled in Boston, Mass. I have been told that later they might have
lived in Brighton, Mass but am unsure. Aaron, the father, died in the 1920s
and his wife, Bessie (Basse in Yiddish), was the head of the household.
Bessie's maiden name was WERTKIN. Her children's names were Elizabeth, Gussie
(Ausgusta), Thomas, Rosie and Anna (twins) and Philip. They were born between
1905 and 1919. I can not find any of them. They seem to have vanished. If
anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. I have hit a wall.

Thank you.

City Directories #general

Joseph Fibel <JFibel@...>

Dear J Genners

One of posters today asked for a researcher to do some look ups in another
city's City Directories. This is completely unnecessary.

There are three separate possibilities for such research.

1.) Look in the local phone book for the local church (stake) of the
Church of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons or LDS). Look for a listing
for their Family History Library. Check in the the FHL Index and find
the microfilm roll or rolls for the dates and community you are looking
for, and put in your order for them. It is only a few bucks per roll.
You'll have them in 10 days.

2.) Call any close by large city public library and see if they have the
City Directories you need.

3.) For smaller community look ups, call the
local public library and ask the Information or Reference Librarian if they
have the City Directories you are looking for and if they would be good
enough to do a look up for you. They probably would do it for you if you ask
nicely.

State Libraries also might be able to help you in the same way.

All of the above have Microfilm Readers and Printers.

I live in New Rochelle, NY and have used the N R Public Library set several
times but they don't have a complete set. Several years are open without
books but there are enough so that you can get the information you need.

The NY Public Library has a very large collection and I would guess that
they add to the collection all the time but when I needed the Easton, PA
C.D.'s they did not have them. Of course, the Easton, PA Public Library
did have a complete set for the years I needed for their community.

relatives in Augusta, GA; Polish name #general

Sharon R. Korn <s.r.korn@...>

I am seeking information about Simon BROWN of Augusta, GA, who was born in
Warszawa, Poland, in 1829 with the last name of BRAUN. I have found a
record in the All-Poland Database for a Szayne Braun born in 1829 in Warsaw.
Before I go to the expense of ordering the record, I would like to know if
this could be a male name or if it is the equivalent of the Yiddish female
name of Scheine. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Recently I asked if there was anyone living in Augusta who would be willing
to take cemetery photographs of my husband's ancestors' graves, because I
had been told that at least one of the tombstones had Hebrew lettering. I
wish to thank the reader >from Charleston, SC, who forwarded my query to one
of his relatives >from Augusta who does not participate in the discussion
group but very graciously offered to help me.

I was able to obtain burial information about 8 ancestors and various other
relatives who lived and died in Augusta because the municipal cemeteries
there have put a huge amount of information into an online database. It is
a remarkable resource. If anyone is looking for relatives buried in
Augusta, I would be happy to tell you how to locate and use this database.

On 2005.11.29, Ruben Weiser <weiser@...> enquired:

I am looking for any genealogical information about Rabbi Yoel Tzvi
ROTH of Khust. Specialy his ancestors. He wrotte the book Beith Ha
Yotzer.
Rabbi Yoel Zvi ROTH of Chust, author of Beis Hayotzer (Muncasz 1896)
died in 1891.

He was the son-in-law of R' Yaakov GOTTLIEB, who preceded him as Rav
in that Kehillo

There are several references to him in Chachmei Hungaria by
Y.Y. Cohen, (Mechon Yerushlaim 1997).

This latter work says that there are biographical details of R' ROTH
in the preface of the Beis Hayotzer and also in a work by his
grandson, R' Ephraim Fischel ROTH, entitled "Yotzer Oir", published
in Miscols in 1944.
