Concerning Names #lithuania

When our son was born in 1956 he was named Louis. His father was Louis.
Beforehand we consulted with our Conservative Rabbi and he said it was
perfectly allright as long as the Hebrew names were different.

In my immediate family my daughter was named after her grandfather
(Eliahu=feminine Ayula) and her great grandfather (Mordechai=feminine
Miriam). When my son was born my inlaws felt the name after the great
grandfather should be held by a male. The rabbi (conservative) said you
could have as many names after the deceased as you wished even in the
same family so my son was named Mordechai. To be fair and not to be
outdone, my next son was named after Eliahu.

Thank you for asking - I'll check it out. The family is >from Latvia
and Belarus,so I actually not considered any Sephardic heritage.

However, family lore in one PAIKIN-branch and a recent Y-DNA test
hints at a possible Sephardic heritage - as does (maybe!) also some
names in the family. Although I didn't think of it as anything but
family lore and perhaps incorrect origin provided by one Y-DNA testee!

Your question has now made me think twice and I will go through my
data once more with that in mind.

Best regards
Elsebeth Paikin

Dear Fellow Litvaks,

Sefardim named children after their living grandparents but not after
living parents.

Pinsk #poland

Hi

I have already found a town called Piñsk. I know that is difficult to look
for towns and people names that have local spelling.

This address below links you to Piñsk. Piñsk is Polish spelled name of
the town that now belongs to Belarus. It has number 9.

I'm afraid but you don't have English version of this page.

On a recent trip to Philadelphia, I was able to locate and copy the
naturalization papers of my grandfather. His birth place as shown on his
grave stone was Bialystok. However, on the naturalization papers, it is
listed as Pinsk-Karolinsk, Russia. I have not been able to locate this
town. Can anyone make some suggestions ?

Re: Synagogue Records in S.A.

On our very extensive Synagogue site i.e.

http://www.jewishgen.org/SAfrica/synagogues/index.htm

we have interesting information on Synagogues past and
present.

However, who does one contact if one needs information >from a
specific Synagogue's Records, especially if that Synagogue no
longer exists?

The United Orthodox Synagogues to whom I have
written on a number of occasions do not reply to messages - I
presume due to the fact that they are short staffed.

Must one engage a Researcher to go to the Offices of
the United Orthodox Synagogues in the various towns, and will
these Researchers be allowed to go through records to find what
is required?

Of course this is taking into account that I do not live in South
Africa and am unable to attend to this personally.

Thanks.

Kitty Levy #southafrica

Richard Gilbert

I am interested in finding out information about my great grandmother's
sister, Kitty Levy.

Kitty was living at 3 Yalford Street, Mile End Old Town, London England on
5th April 1891 she was born in Poland (possibly Yanova) between 1867 and
1871, but by 20th March 1905 she was living in Johannesburg

Kitty was one of 6 children, Milly (Woolf), Fanny (Newman), Isaac Levy,
Esther (Lustig) and Julia (Lustig). They were the children of Levy Jacobs
and Deborah Jacobs. By the end of the 19th Century the children were using
the surname of Levy.

Levy Jacobs died on 23rd May 1913. His wife Deborah predeceased him on 20th
March 1905. By 1905 Kitty was living in South Africa. According to the
obituary that appeared in the Jewish Chronicle for Deborah, Kitty was
married to someone by the surname of Levy and was living in Johannesburg.

According to my late grandfather, all he knew of his aunt was that she lived
in Bloemfontein and was married to a tailor. They are supposed to have had
2 sons - one a rugby player and the other was associated with race courses.

I would like to be able to trace Kitty's family. If anyone recognises any
of the details or can put me on track for tracing them I would appreciate
hearing >from you.
