Ela, you'll need to find a male >from your father's surname line --
an uncle, male cousin, or if none are available, a more distant
cousin, descended in the surname line >from your paternal
great-grandfather. Many of us have gone that route. I've found
appropriate male or female cousins to provide samples representative
of six of my eight great-grandparents, but the other male and female
line died out before my time.

And my father Abe Kalman was married to Ruth
on June 6 1943, one year before D day!. But
they were married 54 years.

re-partitioned into the modern FSU country of Belarus--which had been known
as the region of "Byelorussia" during the Imperial era.

Therefore, there are many of us today in the Diaspora, third or fourth
generation descendants of Jews who had considered themselves to be
"Litvaks," c. 1900, who now are discovering that our ancestral shtetlach
no longer lie within the borders of Lithuania.

Depending on where the shtetl of Rishy's family is located, the proper
archive could be either in modern "Vilnius" ("Vilna") or in Minsk,
Belarus.

Robert Treuhaft was a well-known Oakland attorney who died several
years ago. He was born in New York City in 1912 to Hungarian
immigrants. I don't know where they came from. Treuhaft was married
to author Jessica Mitford. I believe that they had two sons. I
think that Benjamin lives in NYC. Contact me off-list for his e-mail address. Their son Noah is a computer scientist who may still
be at UC Berkeley.

There was a Treuhaft family living in Kalamazoo, Michigan at least as

Vasarosnameny is still in Hungary. I visited a few years ago as my paternal
grandfather was born there. Not much remains of the Jewish cemetery. While I
never looked for records >from that town (since the family has roots
elsewhere) I do have a copy of my grandfather's 1917 birth record that was
certified in Vasarosnameny in 1947.
