Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Yiddish spelling of shtetl Zvil (Novohrad-Volynskij)

Marc L. Greenberg <marek4@...>
Could someone confirm or correct the spelling of the
Yiddish shtetl name Zvil (= Russ. Zviagel', Ukr. Zviahel')? I have seen transliterations as both Zvil and Zvihl, which imply zayin-tsvey_vovn-yud-lamed or zayin-tsvey_vovn-yud-hay-lamed. Unfortunately, I haven't encountered a source actually written in Yiddish. Thanks, Marc L. Uncle Marci

Vivian Kahn
Thanks to everyone who helped to translate the information on the back
of the picture that I uploaded to ViewMate. The consensus is that this is a picture of a fellow named Marci, which is often a nickname for Marton but could possibly also be a nickname for Markus, the name of one of my paternal grandfather's younger brothers. Appears that three different people wrote on the back of the picture. The inscription on the bottom says: To my dear sister-in-law Hermina and To my dear older brother Victor with love Marci Hermina and Viktor Neumann were my paternal grandparents. I haven't identified a great-uncle named Marton but know that my grandfather did have a younger brother named Markus who was born in 1883. The entry on the top says: Uncle Marci died at home December 3, 1912 (the "3" is apparently written rather unconventionally) I have to find a sample of my Aunt Blanche's handwriting to see if she added this information to the picture, which was found among her belongings. Someone else also wrotethe name "Gabor " in a different handwriting. Never heard of Gabor but he might have been one of my father's cousins. If Marci and Markus are the same person, he was 29 when he died so Gabor could have been Marci's son. Thanks again to everyone who helped with this effort. I have just received a photocopy of a 60 page name listing of the jewish
community of Levice published shortly after the war. The names are ocasionally in alphabetical order. Some of the names contain death dates/places, but most simply state "unknown" or "did not return". For example, here is an entry for my grandfather's stepmother and his half-brother: vd. Erdos Berta nezvestna (unknown) Erdos Imrich 16.XII.1944, Osw. If your family is >from Levice, please contact me offlist and I will try to locate your relatives' names. List of Archive Holdings for Transcarpathian Archives!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
I took a look at the Hungarian genealogy website produced by Janos Bogardi, and much to my surprise found the announcement to a link for a list of archival holdings for the Transcarpathian archives. You can find the link below. http://www.radixlog.com/ Sadly, the whole report is written only in Ukrainian! http://www.archives.gov.ua/Publicat/Guidebooks/Putivnyk-Zak-obl.php The file is in PDF format, and appears to contain mostly lists of towns with the years available for certain records. If someone is able to convert the file >from PDF format into word format, I think it would then be possible to use software to transliterate the Cyrillic into the Latin alphabet so it may be more useful for the rest of us. Please share your thoughts and ideas! Sincerely, Adam Smith New York, NY Searching: OBERLANDER: Bereg region, and eastern Hungary SAPSOVICS/SAPSOWITZ: Mainly Maramaros TAMBOR: All |

Family Tree of a Town
#germany
Steve Orlen
Dear Folks,
After joining my wife's cousin in working on the family tree, I noted how many Buttenhauser families are represented on the Family Tree of the Jewish People at JewishGen, & another on the xxxxx genealogy site, each of them interrelated by marriage. I wonder if any of the Buttenhauser researchers have ever considered joining forces to create one tree for the town? If anyone else has done this for their town, please contact me and talk about the practical issues of doing such a project. The two surnames >from which my wife comes are MARX & LIEBMAN. The surnames that married in are as follows (some came >from other nearby cities): OETTINGER, LANDAUER, TANNHAUSER, LEVI, EINSTEIN, LOEWENTHAL, HOFFHEIMER, HIRSCH, HILB, FLEGENHEIMER, DEGGINGER, STERN, BERLINGER, KELLER, SPIRO, ROTHSCHILD, BLOCH, ROHRBACHER, BAER... Best, Steve Orlen Tucson, AZ <sorlen@...> MODERATOR NOTE to *** all members ***: It will encourage other listmembers to take inquiries seriously if you provide complete and accurate information about the town(s) you mention in messages sent to the GerSIG Forum. The JewishGen town finder (Shtetl Seeker) does not recognize the town name given in the message above. It does report the following: Buttenhausen 48°22' 09°29' Germany 334.2 miles SSW of Berlin which is on a small river called the Große Lauter. The town is almose due west of Munich in the Schwaebische Albe (Alps). Please identify towns clearly when you write to this list. MODERATOR |
