Greetings,
Is anyone still publishing any printed (on paper!) journals with small memoirs and with index data, and articles re geneaology, regarding POLAND? There was the wonderful Kielce-Radom Special Interest Group Journal -- but I think it no longer is being issued. I have an old paper my father (a survivor >from Chmielnik, Poland) wrote on the destruction of the town which might be of interest to people David Ferleger MODERATOR'S NOTE: Please respond privately if you have any publication suggestions. ======================================== David Ferleger 10 Presidential Blvd, Suite 115 Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004 610-668-2221 610-668-3889 fax http://www.summitsolutions.us Innovative Arbitration, Mediation & Alternative Dispute Resolution email mailto:davidferleger@... ======================================== |

My family on both sides have always eaten latkes with sugar but only my
father's father's family came >from Poland (Kalisz) . My father's mother came >from near Minsk, Belarus and my mother's family came >from Riga, Latvia and Russia. So I'm not sure if your Polish theory holds true! I only came across the notion of eating them with sour cream or applesauce when reading American Jewish cookbooks. Happy Chanukah! Enjoy those latkes! Vivienne Fleet Engalns ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: Crzprncess@... Reply-To: Crzprncess@... To: "JRI-Poland" Subject: [jri-pl] Latke tradition Date: Sun, 11 Dec 2005 09:10:23 EST ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hello, Hope this is an appropriate place to ask this question and not considered off topic, but I have a question about latkes and the Jews of Poland. For the most part, my family was >from modern day Poland or the Ukraine. The Polish side of my family always put sugar on their latkes, rather than applesauce or sour cream. The Ukrainian branch of the family would tease us incessantly, but my grandparents proudly told everyone it was a Polish Jewish tradition. Every now and again I come across others who top their latkes with sugar and coincidentally their family of origin has been Polish as well. So, my question to the group: is this a bubba meiser or is there some truth to it? Or perhaps it is more regional. Potato latkes served with the sugar bowl was the norm in our family too.
Our late parents came >from Krakow and Warsaw. The gefilte fish in our home was sweet, and tea was always served with lemon in a glass. The finer and thinner the glass; the better the tea. Barbara Zilber,Montreal, Canada |

Hi: To answer the sugar on latkes tradition, my family came >from Congress
or Russ-Poland.. They put sugar on latkes and also sugared the gefilte fish too. I was once at a Chanukah party where latkes were served. My grandmother was >from Nowy Targ (Krakow region) Poland. I grew up with
applesauce and sour cream on my latkes, and definitely not-sweet gefilte fish. As a child, I can remember putting sour cream on and in many dishes -- including borscht with boiled potatoes, and hot corn meal mush for breakfast. Stephanie Weiner San Diego, CA |

How about not just sugar, but cinnamon sugar on latkes?
That was what we did in our family growing up in Salt Lake city, previously Brooklyn, previously a shtetl south of Bialystock. When the cinnamon got added I cannot say. Susan Rosenthall Portland, Oregon PS My mother said it was only the Romanians who added sugar to their gefilte fish. |

Comments on the Timing of Birth Registrations in Polish Vital Records
#poland
David Ferleger
What a great and timely question. I am sure others are more versed
than me in this, BUT I spent Saturday evening with a Holocaust Survivor, early 80s, who's known me >from birth. He's a close family friend. In response to my describing finding birth dates/information, he said that: 1. Registrations are not necessarily accurate. 2. In small towns, Jews often went and registered births officially in batches, with more than one at a time, and not necessarily at the actual date of the birth. On the other hand, someone has given me family history information based on memories and oral data >from various relatives over the years, and some of it conflicts substantially with the birth/marriage/death town data. In that case, I am more likely to accept the 'official' recorded data as closer to reality. Sadly, we'll never really know a lot of this. David Ferleger |
