According to EIDB my grandmother, and one sister are listed as coming fromSheila, Chraplice are not identified through the ShtetlSeeker (USBGN database) but there are several methods to pinpoit its location 1. Chraplice are listed in 1929 Poland Business Directory, direct link to page #637: http://data.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/1929/loadtop.htm?0637 The entry for Chraplice indicates that this was parish in Przemysl district with the tiny population of 195 people, and with all the civilized facilities (phone, telegraph, post office) located in Medyka and Przemysl. Count Stanislaw Studnicki is listed as the landowner of Chraplice. BTW, count Studnicki family were the owners of several land and forest properties in Sambor and Przemysl regions. 2. Review of Himmels records indicate that all of them have listed their town of origin as Chraplice or Sambor with the notable exception of Bertha Himmel (arr. 1905), since next to her name town "Raplicz" is listed. Raplicz" appears to be Ellis Island clerk's lingusitic interpretation since Chraplice, pron. Village at this time was owned by countess Luidegarda Stadnicki, and it had 162 residents - 140 Rusins (Ukrainins), 6 Poles and 16 Jews. It has also identify that nearest Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic churches were located in Hussakow and Chodnowice. Since Chodnowice, currently known as Khodnovichi at 4943 2257 and nearby Hussakow, currently known as Gusakov at 4943 2300, are both located in western Ukraine just south of Polish town Medyka, you can now use ShtetlSeeker to see close proximity (2-to 4 miles distance) of the vicinity where Chraplice used to be located. Unfortunatelly radius search does not reveal Chraplice either. 4. Chraplice can be pinponted by using on - line pre WWI Austrian Army map at: http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/digkonyv/topo/3felmeres.htm Click on a quadrant located east >from Przemysl (long 49.5 - lat. 41 identified with red circle "Szambor" You will locate Chraplice on the map at 4944 4039 ccordinates. Finally, using Lviv Province Soviet era map on line at: http://www.infoukes.com/ua-maps/oblasts/oblast02/ one can identify in B5 quadrant tiny place "Kreptichi" this is what used to be known as Chraplice. Re: NYC death certificates
#general
Sharon R. Korn <s.r.korn@...>
NYC records death certificates for everyone, including stillborn infants. I
have found various errors in spelling, and many people (not just suicides) are listed as unknown. Using the search engine at www.stevemorse.org helps, but it hasn't let me search for "unknown" (which was a suggestion I found in the discussion group earlier this week). However, if you go directly to the death index at www.italiangen.org, you can enter the last name "unknown." With both of these websites, you can use different wildcards to try to find the last name you are seeking. You can also enter just a first name, which may not have been given in the case of a stillborn infant. Actually, there was a case in my husband's family where an infant who died right after birth was given a name but we didn't know that until I started doing genealogy research, as it was not on the tombstone. Codes on NYC death certificates?
#general
Hilary Henkin <hilary@...>
Dear group,
I've noticed some interesting codes on two NYC death certificates I have. Perhaps someone here knows their meaning? The two certificates are >from 1936 and 1943. On the left side of each certificate, is a column of boxes. Each box is labelled (as best I can read): Boro-Coats Institution Boro Resid. Area Dist. Occupation Nativ. Dec. Citiz. Dec. Nativ. Mother Cause 1 Cause 2 Operation Type Accid. O.T. Accid. Att. Autop. Com. Some of these boxes have numerical codes within, and some are blank. I can certainly guess what each abbreviation means, but I'm interested in the meanings of the codes I'm particularly interested in the three boxes, labeled "Nativ. Dec.", "Citiz. Dec.", and "Nativ. Mother". On one certificate, all three boxes have the number "16" written in. since I'm not sure if one of these individuals ever became a citizen, perhaps this code might give me a clue. Does anyone know anything bout these codes?
