My family came >from seduve(shadova) in the 1880,s
and settled in Clocolon,Excelsior but mainly Winburg (Free State). there were in all about 25 Jewish Families .Most of the services were held in my Grandfathers House and at the Town Hall for High Holy days. In 1920 a suitable stand was found given by the Municipal Council.. The Synagogue was built with the financial help of the 25 families and some Afrikaner Families. The last Jewish Family left in the 1980,s and the Shul fell into disrepair and was finally demolished in 1998. I have visited South Africa many times and searched for information but have never been able to discover what happened to the Community or Shul Records although I have found some snippets of information in the Zionist Record Journal. Families with Winburg connections are. Richter,Rieck,Rosettenstein,Sack,Shapiro,Shulman,Siew,Sorsky,Walt,Zimmerman, Anziska,Glaser , Miller,Lintoph,Minsker,Kaplan etc. Can anyone help? best wishes David Isaac Pincus |

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>
Since Meyer HASENFUS may have been murdered wouldn't there be references to
him in the newspapers of the time, both the Jewish and the Johannesburg papers? Also, wouldn't there be police records of the murder investigation and subsequent court proceedings if the murderer were found? Police records would usually have quite a bit of information regarding the deceased and his family and the circumstances of his death. The court records would also be probably quite voluminous and informative. I know that in the United States police records are kept for long periods of time, although I once looked for some that were 75 years old and found that the police had just thrown them out. Actually, I thought that perhaps they really hadn't thrown them out, but did not want to go and look for them in storage. Ann Rabinowitz annrab@... |

Is there any database or listing of Jewish soldiers who fought in the
Crimean War (1854-56) or of soldiers who trained at military academies or institutes in Ukraine (Russia at the time) during the latter part of the 19th century? I'm looking for an ancestor, Joseph (last name unknown), who was a captain in the army and his son Nathan YESOWITZ (which means son of Joseph) who subsequently trained in a military academy. They were possibly >from Wolna (now Belarus) or Kovel (now Ukraine). Gene Alpert Arlington, VA |

you know what additional information the records would contain? Also, the link to re-sort the list or to order records did not work for me.
