SOKOLOV - MALVIDSON

Angie Elfassi
Hi,
Firstly I would like to thank all of those who responded so promptly and with such generous information. In the meantime, I have spoken to my elderly relative and it would appear that I had some incorrect information. My greatgrandmother Freya nee SOKOLOV had family called MALVIDSON/MAELVIDSON who may have been in banking. This is the branch that moved to Sweden. If that family surname rings a bell with anyone of family who moved to Sweden >from Latvia maybe around 1905-1915 (very approximate dates), then please contact me. Regards Angie Elfassi Israel Searching: REICHZELIGMAN/RICHMAN, Stakliskes, Lithuania/Leeds COHEN, Sakiai, Lithuania/Leeds MAGIDOWITZ, Jurbarkas, Lithuania/Leeds KASSIMOFF, Rezekne, Latvia/Leeds __________________________________ Yahoo! Derechin Records Update
#belarus
mjgerver@...
Dave Fox asked me to post a correction to his posting about Kevin
Hanit's project to have the Derechin revision lists translated and uploaded to the Belarus Country Database. The years for which the Derechin revision lists are available are 1806, 1850, and 1858. I hope that everyone here with Derechin ancestors will contact Kevin (klh44@...) about making a donation to help pay for this project, so that it can be completed as soon as possible. Derechin Records Update 1
#belarus
David M. Fox <davefox73@...>
I am pleased to announce that the 1806, 1850, and 1850 Revision Lists for
Derechin are in the process of being translated into English and placed into an Excel spreadsheet for eventual uploading to the Belarus Country Database. A few people responded to my previous message asking who had spoken to me at the IAJGS Conference about getting Derechin records. That person is Kevin Hanit in Canada. Kevin will be the person to contact regarding fundraising to pay for this project. He can be reached at <klh44@...>. The name of the game is patience and persistence. Pinkas Mohel of Alexander Tachauer from Nurenberg
#unitedkingdom
Abuwasta Abuwasta
Dear UK Siggers,
Since quite a number of Jews managed to find their way to the UK in the 1930s,including via the Kindertransport I thought that the following might be of interest. The Pinkas Mohel or Sefer Habritot of the late Alexander Tachauer the Mohel who lived in Nurenberg and performed circumcisions between 1919-1933 was published privately by his children in Israel in 2002.Though he lived in Nurenberg, he performed also in Bamberg,Furth and other cities.I got interested in it because of my family member Shmuel Koenigsbuch who had his Brit in 1920. Alexander Tachauer circumcized also the known designer Otto Treumann and Henry Kissinger. The importance of it is that one may see the Hebrew name of the boy. If you provide me a year of birth I'll be willing to look up. Jacob Rosen Jerusalem

Could "Yitzhak" be translated as "Alexander?"
#general
HeyJudy123@...
I apologize for this question, because I know this type of query sends some
of our participants off on tangents. Nonetheless, there are some scholars on this site, people far more learned than I am. As a result, there probably is someone who may be aware of the definitive answer to the following question without needing to do intensive research. Would anyone know if, back in Czarist Russia, "Alexander" would have been a reasonable interpretation of the Yiddish first name "Yitzhak?" TIA, Judy Segal New York City

#general
Cary Aufseeser <cary@...>
We have an oral family tradition of Scotch descent for my ancestral LONDON
surname. I had assumed these ancestors were Jewish. Would anyone in this forum know if Scot merchants and mercenaries (Jewish or not) settled in the Breslau, Silesia area of what was then Austria, but became Prussia in the 1600s/1700s? Alternatively was there an English migration of merchants and mercenaries to the Breslau area during that time period? Cary Aufseeser Newton, MA cary@...
