During my professional lifetime I attended many conferences in many places,
of the American Chemical Society, Plastics Engneering Society, and others. Some of the confereences had thousands of participants. The organizers attached to the invitation to the conference a map of the area with several hotels marked on it. The marking indicated the category or price range and addresses of the hotels. The organizers of our conference could do the same. They could include the area of New Jersey and other areas accessible to the Marriott. Dr. Joseph M. I am looking for information concerning the famous russian composer Anton I believe that this is rather a family legend since Anton Rubinstein family is >from the small settlement Vykhvatintsy situated in the Podolia region of Ukraine where Anton was born in 1829. Village Vykhvatintsy is located in the vicinity of the known larger Jewish Pale territory towns of Khmelnitsky (ex Proskurov), Satanov, Gorodok and Yarmolintsy. This is far away >from the Eastern Prussia. Rubinstein family was converted in Anton's yearly age, it is known that his six years younger brother Nikolai (a founder of Russian Musical Society and St. Petersburg Conservatory) was already born in Moscow in 1835 which was normally off limits for the Jews. Little is known about Anton Rubinstein parents - his father name was Grigory (presumably originally it was known as Gershon), he was an industrialist who opened factory in Moscow in 1835, the year when his younger son, Nikolai was born. I could not locate even the first name of Anton's mother - it is known that she was German and Anton's first piano instructor till the professional piano teacher A.I. Villoing took care of young Anton. Villoing took Anton for the European tour (1840-1843) when he was just 11 - this tour has introduced young prodigy to the Russian Imperial family members during his visit to Netherlands which was important for his future since the Russian Emperor's Nicholas I sister - in law, The Grand Duchess Yelena Pavlovna (formerly Princess of Saxe-Altenhurg) took young Anton under her wings. Only known to me Anton's relation to Prussia was his touring of the Prussian Empire in his very young age and two years of his family residency in Berlin (1844-1846) where Anton took piano lessons >from Siegfried Dehn and met another famous (and also converted) Jewish musicians Mendelssohn and Meyerbeer. Although his was as famous pianist, his compositions have suffered neglect since his death for several reasons. One of the reason was his Jewish background at a time when anti-Semitism was prevalent in musical circles in Europe. He was also a throw-back as far as musical taste and form are concerned, being influenced by Mendelssohn, Schumann and Chopin, and little else after them. Another reason was that Rubinstein was also constantly at odds with the famous Russian Five (Cui, Mussogrsky, Borodin, Glinka, Tchaikovsky) because of his disdain for nationalism and because his compositional style was very cosmopolitan. The famous Rubinstein's quote: "To the Germans I am a Russian, to the Russians a German; to the Christian I am a Jew, to the Jews a Christians; to the Classicist I am a Wagnerite, to the Wagnerites a reactionary; I am neither fish nor fowl - I am an unfinished man". BTW, there is no relation between born in Lodz, Polish Jewish pianist Artur Rubinstein and Anton Rubinstein. Alexander Sharon Calgary, Ab, Canada |

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Conference venue

Martha LEV-ZION <martha@...>
While I can appreciate the complaints - and even feel the pinch
myself - I don't think that those writing to complain about the venue are aware of what it takes to set up a conference of this sort. There are few hotels that have the number and proper sized halls available for multisession talks every hour. When a conference group makes a deal with a hotel, they have to take into account the cost of the halls, the cost of the rooms, the cost of the food, the convenience of proximity to local archives, the ability to house at least 1,000 guests, the number of free room nights they can obtain per number of beds ordered; and more and more. It isn't just a simple matter of how much a room will cost the attendees, although that is certainly a factor. It is also the number of rooms and halls available; the ability to have enough rooms to host SIGs for lunches and meetings; available security and logistics. A million things go into choosing the right hotel for the Conference. That probably is the hardest thing for the committee to finally decide. If NYC has decided on the Marriott, you can be sure that they have checked out all possible alternatives and received the best deal available >from the Marriott. After all, it is in the interests of the JGSNYC to have as many of us attend as possible! So try to cut them some slack about the cost of the rooms. They did the best by us that was possible, taking all the requirements of the conference into consideration. I know what goes into this choice because of our Conference arrangements in Jerusalem in 2004. So thank you, JGSNYC, for making the best arrangements you could for us! Re: Rozdol records

Further to Israel Pickholtz's response about further Rozdol records
becoming available for indexing by JRI-Poland. This response applies to ALL Jewish administrative towns with records at the AGAD Archives in Warsaw and also towns with records at other Polish State Archive regional branches in Poland (e.g. Krakow, Przemysl, Rzeszow). First, you can establish whether vital records for your town exist and where they can be found at Miriam Weiner's Routes to Roots Foundation website at http://www.rtrfoundation.org/search.asp. To find out more about vital records of Poland, read the JewishGen Infofile at < http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/polandv.html >. Vital Records registers with records that are 100 years old or less are maintained by local civil records offices in Poland. Those records for eastern Galicia are maintained at the civil records office in Warsaw. Periodically (in the case of the Warsaw civil records office, every two years), vital records registers that contain records that are ALL over 100 years old are transferred >from the civil records office to the Polish State Archive regional branch. After the transfer, these records are then available to JRI-Poland for indexing and ordering of the underlying records. The key point here is that ALL the entries in the register book MUST BE over 100 years old to be transferred and then indexed. For large towns like Lwow, Stanislawow, Kolomyja, and Tarnopol, register books usually contain only one year of records. We expect (and hope) that 1904-05 vital records for these towns will be transferred to the AGAD Archives sometime in 2006. For smaller towns, multiple years of records are contained in the vital record registers and these books will not be transferred until all the records are over 100 years old. For example the following records were transferred in recent years and contained many years of records. Jagielnica 1896-1902 Births Trembowla 1892-1903 Births Borszczow 1877-1900 Marriages Tartakow 1877-1903 Marriages Skala 1893-1900 Deaths Borszczow 1899-1902 Deaths You can readily see that multiple years are transferred and this is most prevalent when dealing with marriages, where examples show 25 years of marriage records in one register book. There is no way to estimate when new volumes for Rozdol or any town will become available for indexing. When JRI-Poland is notified of a transfer from the Warsaw USC to AGAD, we will announce the contents of thistransfer.
