As Town Leader for the town of Mielec for JRI - Poland (Jewish
Records Indexing-Poland), I am happy to share some good news for Mielec researchers. Approximately 5,000 Mielec records in the Rzeszow branch of the Polish State Archives have been indexed for JRI - Poland, including census listings, army draft entries, and vital records. The Archives also reports the discovery of 3,000-3,500 additional records, which we hope can be indexed in the future. If you would like more information on these records, please let me know, and I will be glad to send details. Renee Renee Stern Steinig rsteinig@... Dear Researchers,
The web site below enables a search of passengers and dutch ships. As many of our ancestors fled Europe by this means you may find it useful source of records. http://d-compu.dyndns.org/Passagiers/default.asp I have recently obtained a list of passengers on the Baloeran that departed from Rotterdam on Feb 18 1939 to various destinations including Port Saidand others on the way to Batavia. My grandparents were on this vessel as the first leg of their escape >from Germany to Australia. I have studied the list and identified what I believe to be other Jewish names. I have listed these below. Anyone with an interest in these names or other aspects of this list are welcome to contact me for more details. It is with deep sorrow that I convey condolences to Dr. Perets (Percy) Mett
and his family of London on the tragic loss of his son Shmuel Eliyahu (Hashem Yinkom Damo) who was murdered by an Arab terrorist in Jerusalem. Dr. Mett is a member of the committee of RavSIG and is known for his genealogical researches, particularly Chassidic families. Those who attended the International Conference on Jewish Genealogy in Jerusalem last year may recall Perets. May the Almighty comfort him and his family together with all the mourners for Tzion and Yerushalayim. Dear Cousins,
Rabbi Ben-Zion Saydman asked: My latest mystery involves a NYC death certficate. Riva MELTSNER died October 17, 1909 at the Montefiore Home for Chronic Invalids. Has anyone ever heard of this institution? If so, do they have records >from 1909? The death certificate states that Riva lived at the Montefiore Home for 8 1/2 months prior to her passing...>>> Not only have I heard of Montefiore, I see its name on my paycheck every two weeks. It still exists, as Montefiore Medical Center. In 1909, it was located in upper Manhattan, but plans were already underway for it to expand and move to the Bronx, which it did in 1912, and since then its address has been 111 East 210th Street. Although it started as a chronic care institution, taking care of patients with tuberculosis, cancer, and other chronic illnesses, it became an acute care hospital decades ago. Back then, patients >from all over New York City were sent there for the "fresh air," which was the main treatment for tuberculosis. This continued even after they moved to the Bronx. They have an Archivist's Office (telephone number 718-920-6149), but nobody picked up the phone today, and she might be on vacation. However, based on my previous attempts, I do not believe that they have any patient records >from that time, other than noteworthy historical items. Please write to me privately with any additional questions about Montefiore. Ira Ira Leviton
