I am trying to apply for the Award of the Siberian Exiles Cross for my late mother-in-law and father-in-law, both of whom survived the horrible conditions in a Siberian logging camp.  It says it must be applied for only in Polish.  Is there anyone familiar with this application who might be able to help? I have documents that show my mother-in-law and father-in-law (Israel and Anna (Chana) Rzezak coming through Vienna in November of 1945, with their infant daughter Rosalia Rzezak. Only Israel and Anna boarded the Marine Perch to U.S. in May of 1946.  Anna told us before she died that she had a baby girl with a mastoid in her ear who died in great pain in a hospital.  She revealed that she herslef, having endured horrors in the years and months before this (in Lodz Ghetto, in Auschwitz, and in Siberian logging camp -- the through Uzbekistan areas trying to survive but very ill, spend time in a sanitarium after the death of her baby girl.  Anna lost most of her family, murdered in Lodz or other locations.  Israel lost a wife and two children in Lodz or other areas before meeting and helping Anna later in the war.

Anna told us that sanitarium she was in was a former vacation home of Hitler, surrounded by mountains and had gold fixtures inside.  She thinks maybe the Alps area.

I've been trying to find hospital name/records for Rosalia Rzezak.  I've been trying to find the sanitarium  name and records.

Have you considere searching Home - Israel Genealogy Research Association for those peoples marriage certificates? If they married in Israel, before 1948, you could find info about the parents, and their professions.  All you need is the names.

The forms in both Hebrew and English seem to require the national ID number (מספר זהות).  Has anyone here succeeded in obtaining a death certificate without one, and have any advice?

My sole interest in going through this process is to discover the name of the deceased's mother.  The death occurred in 2002 and I have visited and photographed his grave in Ha'Yarkon.  His only son is also deceased (not in Israel), so I would front-end his grandchild who doesn't have the Hebrew skills to apply if I knew this would succeed, but am concerned this is a bureaucratic minefield without the ID number.

Cohen.  If you look at Abraham, the bride's father's name,  it ends with the same kind of hill and valley letter formation, but the "m" is one bit longer than the "n" .

I assume your Wolk family immigrated to Canada, so here are some avenues to explore –

The six siblings who are the children of Leba Volk will have left numerous records that would contain the name of their father. These would be their death certificates and their gravestones (for Hebrew name of father). From the Hebrew name, the most likely Yiddish name(s) that the father used in everyday life in Lithuania can be figured out. Their death certificates should also list where each sibling is buried.

I seem to recall reading here on the discussion board that someone was cataloging the gravestones in Jewish cemeteries in Toronto. Perhaps someone else here has information about that effort.

If you aren’t sure of the death dates of some of these siblings, you could look for newspaper obituaries. Also, check out family trees on Ancestry.com, to find those that contain any of these siblings. Those might have information about death dates, or even info about the siblings’ father.

Another source of information might be your second cousins (grandchildren of the six Volk siblings). I’ve found that second and even third cousins often have family stories or old family trees, that are really indispensable in learning about forebears from 2-3 generations ago.

With regard to Jewishgen records – In looking for my Leybman and Lak forebears in Kovna gubernia, I found it useful to search across an entire uyezd (district), rather than focusing on records from one town at a time. My forebears moved around more than I realized. I also was able to locate records for married daughters this way.

You can check on the Routes to Roots website (https://www.rtrfoundation.org/index.shtml), for which Jewish records have survived for individual towns. For some Lithuanian towns, the records can be rather sparse.

And lastly – in the late 1800s, there was some movement of Jews from northern Lithuania to the city of Riga, Latvia. I have found Lak forebears there, who lived in the city for some time prior to immigrating to the US. You might locate some Volk family members there.

I want to thank everyone that posted here and sent me private messages with kind words about this story and my cousin Leo.

That email from Professor Czech is really something that I need to digest. My thinking now is that it  is most likely that Leo was murdered but I will never be able to confirm it. The fact of who signed the report and that pneumonia was usually used as the cause of death in these cases is extremely suspicious along with the fact that when my father went to visit Leo in the group home and he was not there nobody knew what happened to him. If it was a natural death they would have known and told the family.

I think what I need to turn to next is the group home and try to find out what kind of institution that was. If it was a Jewish home I would want to know what happened to it on Kristallnacht. The address of the home was  Seitenberggasse 12. If anyone here can help me find out what kind of institution was at this address in 1939 I would be most appreciative.. 

The most disturbing part of the story to me is that the pathologist who signed the report, Barbara Uiberak, was a known Nazi and was part of the large program of forced euthanasia yet she was allowed to stay in practice at Steinhof well in the 1960's. Did people just not care. To me this is a severe indictment of the postwar community and government there.

If I learn anything significant I will post it here. Thank your you interest in this story.

I want a translation of the attached 1916 Caplan's Department Store ad from Di Yidishe Velt.  The store was at 4th & South and was owned by my great-uncle, Mayer Caplan.  Mayer's brother, my great-grandfather Morris Caplin (sic), worked in the store.The language of the 10-line ad seems to be a mashup of English and Yiddish words, all written with the Hebrew alphabet.
