Re: Help with Initials #records #usa

Sherri Bobish

Further to Linda's posting - there are two birth records in 1935 for boys named Gennaro Palladino.

The one Linda mentioned:
Gennaro G Palladino
24 Mar 1935 in The Bronx, cert # 3978.

And, Gennaro Palladino
16 Sept 1935 in Manhattan, cert # 23079.

It seems that the Gennaro born Sept. 16th is Gennaro (Gene) M. Palladino.  He passed away
23 Aug 2019 (Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.)  As Linda stated.

And the Sept. 16th Gennaro is the one Linda found on the census (parents Alfred & Irma.)

Four year old Gennaro on the 1940 census was 4.  The census was done in April, and Gennaro turned 5 in Sept.

So, who was the March 24th Gennaro?

Need help with name of the groom #translation

Steven Usdansky

Pulled the attached image off of JRI-Poland; not sure if the groom is related to me. Document is in Russian. I don't need a full translation at this time, just the groom's given names (end pf the 14th line and beginning of the 15th line). JRI-Poland has them as Lejb Josel, but the third letter of the second name looks to me like a Cyrillic "x" rather than a "с" Wondering because the 1874 Belarus Revision Lists compilation/translaton shows the name of my grandfather's 2-year old brother as Iokhel'. Thanks.

Henry was born in Vienna in 1922. He fled Vienna, with his parents, in December 1939, after the outbreak of World War II. They sailed down the Danube to the Black Sea, and then to the Mediterranean, trying to access British Mandate Palestine. Detained by the British, they were sent to Mauritius where they stayed for the duration of the war. In 1945 Henry joined the Jewish Brigade, and fought briefly in Europe before arriving in Palestine in 1946. He joined the fledgling Israeli army and served during the War of Independence in 1948. In 1952, age 30, Henry came to Canada where he has lived ever since. Henry will share some of his many experiences with us.

There will also be a brief presentation by Daniel Horwitz on behalf of the Israel Genealogical Research Association, outlining genealogical resources in Israel covering the 1939–1952 period.

FamilySearch Completes the Name Review of the 1950 Census #announcements #records #usa

Jan Meisels Allen

FamilySearch has completed the Name Review portion of the  1950 U.S. Census Community Project on just 3 months their volunteers reviewed over 151 million names. They are still have to do the Family review. As it is completed it will continue to be released state by state until it is fully by name searchable by name for free at

To accelerate the Family Review for the 1950 U.S. census, FamilySearch will complete some of the remaining parts of the Family Review using an alternative process. Volunteers can review families in the census until Labor Day, September 5, 2022. After that date, any remaining reviews will be completed by FamilySearch to expedite the publication of the searchable census index. The searchable index will continue to be released state by state. (You can follow its release by visiting the map on the 1950 census page (

At the time of this posting the above-mentioned map has completed: Arizona, Delaware, Idaho, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, and Wyoming.

Except that Polish Christians very rarely had toponymic names. Therefore I think the name was definitely a result of conversion to Catholicism or intermarriage .

Re: Why would a teenager flee his Hassidic rabbinic roots? #galicia #poland #rabbinic

I wish to again to sincerely thank all who have replied, either directly to my topic or privately. Part of my motivation was gaining references and other insights to the lives and culture of these small Galician communities and Hassidic practices. This is so I may eventually share with my family. My main motivation was to obtain some insights that could assist in providing credibility into very incomplete and contradictory information. Philip is an enigma. There are multiple birthdates and names. There is no solid manifest match and his Government records are few and contradictory. For example, his offical birth year is 1902 as reflected on his naturalization petition.  Yet he registered for the WW1 draft at would be the age of 16.  This is not consistent as he would have been too young.  The records state he immigrated by himself in 1913. He would have been 15. Again, too young for US immigration laws at the time.  I have found a JRIPoland 1897 birth record for an Eisig Eisensten (the record content shows the surname is actually Eichenstein). The index has a Rabbi Moses Eichenstein of Schodnica as the father and Sara Rifke EFRUSI as the mother.  The mother's surname is essentially the same as what Philip used on several official Government documents.  The birth date puts his age much more consistent with traveling alone to the US and registering for the WWI draft.  What I had little insight into is the history, if any, of sons of Hassic rabbinic dynasties making such a clean break from these families. This seemed unusual and cast suspecion on the connections.

Be Counted Now! Everything You Wanted to Know About the 2022 Israeli Census
Speaker: Nitzan HaCohen

The Central Bureau of Statistics is currently conducting the most innovative census of the State of Israel, which began in April 2022 and is expected to end in December 2022. In a lecture by Mr. Nitzan Hacohen, director of the 2022 Census, you will receive answers to fascinating questions such as: The State knows everything about me. Why do I need it? Who cares? How do you choose who participates in the census? Why not sample everyone? Is there a connection between the census and the Knesset elections? From what age are people enumerated? Are only citizens of the country enumerated? What changes have taken place over the years in the enumeration methodology? To whom is our data transmitted? How do I know that my privacy is being protected? Is it mandatory to answer the census questionnaire? And a discussion on how censuses in the Western world are handled in the last round of censuses, and more and more ...

Nitzan HaCohen, holds a master's degree with honors in political science from the University of Haifa. In the 1995 census, he served as a field commander as a student job, and upon completion of his master's degree, he was engaged in project management in the 2008 census. In the 2008 census, he managed the field processes in the census, and later served as deputy director of the senior division of surveys at the Central Bureau of Statistics. HaCohen, a former basketball player, participated in Ironman competitions six times and ran marathons. He defines the 2022 census as the most significant and enjoyable marathon.

Trying to find family members who went to Israel #israel

I’m working on my family tree and trying to find members of the branch originating in Russia (currently Belarus) who went to Israel some after WWII. I would appreciate any information on the following descendants of Alta and Herschel Levonovich:

(1) Miriam who apparently had 3 children one being Judith.

(2) Esther (school teacher) who married Hans Berger (dentist from Holland) and had 3 children: Nitai (born 1962), Hagit (born 1961) and another son.

(3) Joseph Levonovitz (or Levonovich) who married Panina and had 3 children: Micha (Israeli army captain), Tzvi, and Schlomo who married Ora.

(4) 2 daughters of unknown names.

Re: Translation Help Needed - German? Polish? #translation

This is in German.

Column 4, "Name", says that the child died before being named.

Column 5, "Legitimate or Illegitimate birth", says "Illegitimate".  This sometimes means that the parents had only a religious marriage but not a civil one, but here the column for the father's name is left blank.

Re: Why would a teenager flee his Hassidic rabbinic roots? #galicia #poland #rabbinic

",,the name Philip is a non-issue, just Americanized. Jewish name may have been, for example, Feivish."  This makes sense to me.  My uncle used the name Feivel as his Hebrew name and so does my son.

Re: Disner and Vdig #russia

Paul Chirlin

Disner is also Disna, a town  in present day Belarus,  55°34' N, 28°13' E
There is a Disner benevolent Society with names listed 1967 Disner Benevolent Association (
And a United Disner Ben. Society burial area at Montefiore Cem in NY which is related as it shares some names with those on the Association list eg Emerson Kiffel
There is a marker in the burial section, see

""In memory of the martyrs of Disner exterminated
by the Nazi Murderers June 15, 1942.
May their souls rest in eternal peace. "

"Our beloved from our holy community of Disna who were exterminated, burned and buried alive at the hands of the murderous Nazis. Their sacred memory will be with us always."

Re: Rhode Island (USA) Congregation at Oldest US Synagogue May Stay--For Now #announcements #usa

I have visited this beautiful synagogue on more than one occasion. This dispute is troubling because the building has had extensive repairs in the last decade or two.  While I have no idea why the building is owned by a NY synagogue, it would seem that this treasure should be preserved for all.
