NYC Area Volunteers for a Cemetery Project
A. E. Jordan
I am trying to organize a cemetery project for Mt Zion Cemetery in Maspeth, Queens, New York before winter sets in (or if we fail now in the spring).
I am thinking of trying to do this (weather dependent) November 10th or November 17 -- a Sunday morning. Roads will be quieter to drive there and hopefully the weather will not be too cold. Plus the target plot is in about as good a condition as it will be.
Looking a for a few volunteers with the primary interest being people with a digital camera to take photos and maybe a few people to do some paperwork on site. (Phase II might require some computer work volunteers.) Note there are NO PATHS so it is involving walking over uneven ground, possibly climbing over or around stones, etc. and there will be some wildlife -- those tiny lizards, squirrels, and who knows. I say this so if you are hesitant please don't volunteer although I have been though this plot a few dozen times and not had a problem with animals and maybe stumbled but never fallen. I consider it safe but of course you are at your own risk.
The idea is there is a large plot (2,700 graves) at Mt Zion which seems to have constant interest from people but which the cemetery office has no map and limited details. The plot is called Judah 1 and it is very challenging to find individual graves without the map because it is not one plot but actually a series of sub sections within the big plot. Also since the burial society is long defunct the plot gets less maintenance but right now is clean cut and of course will stay that way till spring.
While the database say 2,700 stones the reality is the project will yield less since there are two large areas of children's stones that will yield little and some stones have fallen or are unreadable. There are a few interesting and unique stones in the plot too.
My idea is volunteers will take sections of the plot and photograph every stone. You will have to make some indications as you go to local or rows and then we can match the names and stones up and maybe even draw a map of this plot. The individual lines are fairly small so you will do a few lines, starting from the same side and indicating when each row ends. Final result will take some time to compile after we leave the cemetery but then we can load it to JOWBR as a gift to the broader community and if we draw a map maybe even give it to Mt Zion for their future reference.
This will be all volunteer but someone offered to buy coffee for the intrepid researchers and I am offering my time (hopefully expertise) to organize it.
If you can assist please email me directly.
Thank you
Allan Jordan

English Translations of Zelva and Dereczin Memorial Books Are Now Online
Jack Berger
Dear readers,
I have recently posted my two earliest Yizkor Book Translations online. These are:
1. The Zelva Memorial Book 2. The Dereczin Memorial Book
Both can be found on my family website at www.zelva.org
In the upper left of the home page of this website, you will see a box labelled “Yizkor Books.” If you click on it, you will be taken to a page where I am posting a *.pdf version of those manuscripts for which I concluded it is time to do so. Just click on the book icon you would like to read.
These two books logically go together, because the towns involved were geographically close to one another, and there is much genealogical overlap between them.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to write to me at: jsberger@...
I hope interested parties will derive value from this information.
Regards Jack

I am looking for information/looking to find my cousin, Gary Goldman. He is around 59 years old, born in the Chicago area (Highland Park, perhaps), son of Bob Goldman and Shirley Goldschmidt. The last any of the cousins heard, he was living in Florida. I've had no luck finding him online. If you have any information, please contact me privately. Thank you!

Launch of Gesher Galicia's Przemysl Identification Project
#austria-czech
Gesher Galicia SIG
Gesher Galicia is launching an extensive longer-term project to
identify 573 Jewish record books of unknown origin housed in the Przemysl State Archive in Poland. Involved are index books of vital records (births, deaths, marriages), including a few index books of unspecified type, as well as some sets of community records. While the dates and most of the record types relating to each register are known, there is no information about their geographic origin. Most of the books, though, are presumed to be >from towns in the former Galicia. Identifying the town of origin of each book will undoubtedly lead to interesting genealogical discoveries for Galician researchers. These books are all subfiles of "File 69" - a set of unknown books - of Fond 154 of the Przemysl State Archive. A list of these index books can therefore be found in the "Inventories" section of the Gesher Galicia website, within the section for "File 69" of Fond 154 of the Przemysl archive, at: https://www.geshergalicia.org/inventories/fond-154/ . Dear Carol,
I think that I can offer an explanation for Ish Horowitz. Horowitz and Epstein were originally members of the Sephardi family BENVENISTE >from Spain who moved to Central Europe. One branch settled in the German town of Eppstein, in Hesse, the other to Horovice in central Bohemia, now in Czech Republic. Each adopted the name of the place as their surname. The Benveniste of Spain were Levi's. Thus all legitimate Epstein and Horovitz are Levi (>from the tribe of Levi). I say "legitimate", because among Jews people have adopted surnames for a variety of reasons. The first Benveniste to adopt the Horovitz surname choose to identify themselves as ">from Horovitz" using a known Hebrew formula "Ish Horovitz", meaning "man >from Horovitz" (ish means man). As an example, Judas Iscariot, the disciple of Jesus, was >from Cariot, Ish Cariot. Eventually the prefix Ish, >from Ish Horovitz, was dropped remaining only Horovitz. The project has been approved by the Polish State Archives, is being managed by the project's secretariat in Poland, and is being carried out in cooperation with the Przemysl archive. Gesher Galicia members now have an exclusive opportunity to participate in the identification project, in this way advancing the knowledge of the genealogical community. If you are not a member of Gesher Galicia and wish to take part in the project, you are most welcome to join, at: https://www.geshergalicia.org/membership/ . New identifications of these presently unknown books will be announced publicly, at regular intervals, and the information shared with the Przemysl State Archive. Further public information can be found on the Gesher Galicia website at: https://www.geshergalicia.org/projects/przemysl-id/ and, for Gesher Galicia members only, in a dedicated section of the Members Portal.
