ceremony was incomplete. It was "The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe" and was in Berlin, the opening ceremonies started with a concert on 9. May followed on the next day by music and official speakers and the ceremonial opening of the memorial for the invited guests. The memorial was finally opened for the public yesterday on the 12. of May. Sorry for the incomplete information Best regards Gabor Hirsch

Notan Zelig LAPIDES/LAPEDIS
#general
Warren Kohn
It's been a long time since I sought information on my great grandfather
Notal Zelig LAPIDES or LAPEDIS. Probably arrived in the States in the mid-1880s, port of entry unknown, country of origin unknown. Believed to have settled in New York. Wife's name was Miriam and he had two daughters, Rebecca and Celia Hannah, both of whom would have been very young (around 3 and 5). He came alone but his wife and children followed later, again port of entry and country of origin are unknown. It appears that Miriam and her daughters were unable to locate Notan Zelig when they got here. They ultimately went to Boston where Rebecca was left in an orphanage and Miriam and Celia Hannah moved to Charleston SC. They were later joined by Rebecca. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Is there any information on Notan Zelig? Any help is appreciated. Warren KOHN wkohn@...

Las Vegas Convention FrenchSIG Luncheon...!
#france
Rosanne Leeson <rdleeson@...>
Dear All,
I have just been notified by those in Las Vegas who are in charge of the Convention scheduling, that only 8 members of the FrenchSIG have signed up to attend a FrenchSIG Luncheon. As the rooms used for the SIG luncheons are set for >from 60 to 80 persons, and very high surcharges are made for any smaller groups, the decision has been made to cancel the FrenchSIG luncheon. It would have been nice, but... However, our SIG meeting is still scheduled for Monday morning, July 11 at 9:45 am, and I do hope that there will a number of you who will attend that! We have matters of importance to discuss. We will also have a presence at the SIG Fair on Wed. July 13. We hope to see you there, too! I will discuss with the Convention planners the matter of returning any fees already paid for the planned luncheon, and let you know the procedure involved. Rosanne Leeson Co-Coordinator FrenchSIG

Biertan, Romania responses
#romania
gedalia54@juno.com <gedalia54@...>
Dear ROM-SIG group members,
I want to make a brief general response to the group that I have been flooded with responses, all of them great and very specific, about where the town of Biertan is. I assume most of these responses have also posted to the group. I never imagined I would get a response as great as this. Once I put them all together and sort them out, I am positive that I will have found my town in Romania. If I haven't replied to you yet directly, it's only because I'm playing 'catch up' and will respond to you in the next day or so. Thanks again for your great response. Charles Millman gedalia54@... The borders have changed and Chotin, Bessarabia is now in Ukraine. Does any of this ring a bell with anyone? I am living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Sincerely, Doug E. STERN
