I believe in the old adage - "nothing ventured, nothing gained."
Diane Jacobs Somerset, NJ Hardly a week ago I posted a query regarding an elderly gentleman IHello Friends, wanted to contact who was the brother of a woman briefly married to my late great-uncle many years ago. A child had resulted and I wanted to contact her, plus learn the usual things. I was uncertain how to proceed and a number of you were kind enough to offer your suggestions. I sent him a letter earlier in the week and he called me today. He is 96 years old and of clear mind.He said he had wondered what had become of the family. Unfortunately his neice is senile and he was uncomfortable about my contacting her adult children. He was unaware whether they knew about her natural father and I told him I would leave things as they were. As all of those folks who answered said, "What have you got to lose?" You were all so right! Regards, H. Baldwin Rocklin, CA >>> |

Ancestors from Latvia - where did they go?
#general
Joyce Gilbert <joycegilber@...>
How do I find more of what happened to ancestors? I heard there were none
left but I found some young ones here in the US last year. They also said that all were killed in Latvia but I've heard of others that escaped - one is supposed to be in St Petersburg. Have seen people with suspiciously similar names and wonder if they are related - the name is not common - there were only 6 people in US with it. MODERATOR NOTE: As you just began your research, you'll be surprised to know that 77 researchers are listed as researching the surname GILBERT. Go to the JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF) located at: http://www.jewishgen.org/jgff/ and perform a simple search. If your ancestors come >from Latvia, go to the Latvia SIG (Special Interest Group) Homepage, located at: http://www.jewishgen.org/Latvia/ and check the resources that are being offered there. Don't miss The All Latvia Database. |

Such as: "I apologize for this automatic reply to your email. To control spam, I now allow incoming messages only >from senders I have approved beforehand. . . . If you would like to be added to my list of approved senders, please fill out the short request form (see link below). Once I approve you, I will receive your original message in my inbox. Dear GERsig members,
At the site below when I view it in the English language, there appears to be Name 1809 and Directory 1832 links, down the right hand side of the page. When I clic these links and enter a surname and then clic on "Los" [go], a "Bad Request" window opens. As I do not know any street address details could this be the problem? http://www.breslau-wroclaw.de/de/breslau/history/jfhn/ Directory of the main and residenz-Stadt Breslau 1832 Can anyone help me access the 1809 and 1832 links on this site? regards Murray Victor New Zealand <mavlin@...> |

Good News for Pinsk Uyzed Reseachers
#belarus
Adam Davis <adamrdavis@...>
Fellow Sigger's:
As I write this email, JewishGen has completed translation of two sets of records >from the Pinsk Uyzed records that will fill in many of the question marks and holes in your family tree. These projects are: 1. Jewish Vital Records (Births, Deaths and Marriages): Jewish records; birth: 1882, 1922-4 Jewish records; death: 1924-28, 1930-39 2. 1816 Revision List and additional metrical records The second project, the 1816 Reviskie Skaski for Pinsk are already finished. As you all know, Revision lists are the richest source for research, and this one of the earliest lists available after the absorption of the Pinsk area into Russia. This time frame directly follows the adoption of surnames among the majority of Belarussian Jews. I have been able to peak at these records and believe I have found the the first users of our family surname. The information in this list is a potential gold mine, but before these records are published, we need to raise funds JewishGen spent to translate them in the first place. The outstanding amount we need to raise is approminately $1000, a reasonable amount in the scheme of things, considering the size of the Jewish population of the the area at the time. There are so many researchers with connections to Pinsk, it should be fairly easy for us to raise the necessary funds and provide a very wonderful new resources for researching our families. I URGE you to donate! Consider for a moment the countless hours and dollars you've invested in researching your family history. Now consider how the record translation projects and infrastructure JewishGen provides have simplified your research over the years. If you've gleaned but one piece of information via the Belarus SIG, you know firsthand there are few more effective or effiencient contributions you could make to benefit your own research than supporting JewishGen's ongoing translation projects. With that in mind, please consider a gift of Ten Chai, or $180 to publish the completed 1816 Revision List translation. Click on the following link and enter your donation under Pinsk Revision Lists and Metrical Records (record acquisition and translation). Please join us! Donate here: http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=1 [MODERATOR NOTE: You will need to scroll down the page to get to Pinsk] Regards, Adam Davis Pinsk Coordinator Belarus SIG |
