Approaching someone from long ago and far away-- thoughts please
#general
sivin@aol.com <sivin@...>
Hello everyone,
I have a little situation I would appreciate some opinions on insofar as approach. About 75 years ago my great-uncle married and had a child. He sadly died soon after, leaving a young widow and infant. The family story goes that our family and hers were in touch for a bit, but then she remarried and disappeared. I have recently found her on a census, living with her family and child after the death of my uncle. The name of a younger brother is given and I'm fairly certain I have located this man. Though I don't have an address(it was not on Google)I do have his phone number. I would like to write him a letter, once I locate his address, in the hopes that he would point me to his niece. Here are my issues: The man is about 95 years old. I have no idea whom he is living with, if indeed he is not living alone. I thought of just referring to our family name and asking him if he could forward my letter on to anyone who might be interested. I hesitate to go into details on paper because of the possibility that the second husband adopted the child, raised her as his own, and perhaps she was never told about the first family. I would not want someone unfamiliar with the story (perhaps a grandchild) to find out this way. Does this seem like a logical way to approach things? I don't feel comfortable calling him and I certainly don't want to upset a family. Thank you. H. Baldwin Sacramento, CA |

While agreeing with the moderator that this is not the start of a
thread, I thought Genners should know that Family Tree DNA, founded by fellow Genner Bennett Greenspan, is doing the testing for the public portion of this interesting project. Inspired by Bennett's own frustration in matching two possible branches of his own family, FTDNA was the first company to provide genetic genealogy testing for family history enthusiasts, whose surname projects increase daily. In looking at Jewish genealogy today, we see that many projects assisting today's researchers began with the inspiration of one person with a vision, such as Susan King of JewishGen itself, Stan Diamond of JRI-Poland, to name only a few of a long list of such individuals. Bill Celmaster <bill.celmaster@...>
My father's parents divorced about 1910 and my grandmother later remarried
in Warsaw. Is it likely that there are any surviving records of this marriage? If so, would my grandmother's surname show up as her original married name, or as her original (maiden) surname? Finally, if the record is likely to have survived, is there a way for me to obtain it remotely, or would I need to show up in person in Warsaw? Thanks in advance for the help. |

LAZARUS and COHEN in Manchester

Don-BonnieBlish <dcatalyst@...>
Hello,
I am trying to locate descendants of Yetta/Jetta/Kate LAZARUS and her children David and Morris LAZARUS and Rachel (Lazarus) COHEN. Yetta = (maiden name KAMYNITZ) and husband Israel LAZARUS immigrated >from "Poland" = before 1870, when daughter Rachel was born in Whitechapel/Spitalfields. Rachel married "Polish" immigrant Myer COHEN and lived in Manchester (Prestwich district, Cheetham subdistrict) with children Harris, Hyman, Jessie, and Philip COHEN, per the 1901 census. I believe a daughter = Toby was born later. Rachel also had 2 sisters, Leah (Lazarus) BAKER (my grandmother) and Sarah (Lazarus) LEOPOLD, who immigrated separately to = the US to join their husbands around 1906. I have posted an entry on the JGFF and have obtained a few birth, = marriage, and census documents. I would appreciate any information on members of = this family or suggestions on how to obtain more recent data. Please respond privately to dcatalyst@.... Thank you. Bonnie Blish Los Angeles, CA Researching: LAZARUS, COHEN (Manchester), LEOPOLD (New York, New = Jersey), KAMYNITZ (Poland), BAKER/BECKER (Russia, Manchester, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Chicago), KHARITON (Dashev-Kiev Gubernia-Ukraine), SABBATH/SABATH (Kiev- Ukraine) |

Hello All!
I recently learned that my great-great grandfather, Nisan Waldman (>from Troskunai) had one more child than I'd previously known. This son, unlike his siblings who immigrated to NYC, apparently settled in Montreal and launched a fairly successful business called "Waldman's Fish Market". It apparently still exists, though under new ownership. I know nothing more about this son, other than his range of birthyears falling between 1860 and 1875. I've checked all the usual locations for more info, including the entire JewishGen site and ALD. If any of you have any other information that might be helpful, please contact me privately at joniffer3@... (unless your response would be of interest to all, of course). Thanks!
