Tell me your experiences with hiring a genealogist in Europe
#general
VivianeCK2003@...
Hi Fellow Genners:
I was thinking of hiring a genealogist. I found a really nice guy who seems to have it all but cannot give me a total estimate of how much the entire venture will cost me. I am not sure if I should hire him immediately. Since I am a complete novice here....could people tell me their experiences with hiring a genealogist in a European Country and how much I can expect it to cost me. Viviane Kluska Canton, Michigan please reply to _vivianeck2003@... Should I also post it to the SIG to which it belongs? I do not know about cross posting...... MODERATOR NOTE: By all means post this question to the appropriate SIG. The answers may well vary >from country to country. Replies with general advice and experience will be considered for posting. We cannot post any replies that identify specific researchers. |

I found a relative recently in the California Death Index.
The Social Security number listed for this person was her late husband's SSN. Is this normal in the CADI? This was my first search in the CADI. --Barry Finkel Chicago, IL, USA |

Stewart Bernstein <skbernst123@...>
This is my yearly posting with my attempt to locate
any remaining family of the Ukrainian/Russian, BERNSTEIN/BARANSHTEYN family from Labun/Labunia/Polonnoye, or any town near Polonnoye, Ukraine. All the Jewish residents of Labun were murdered and the town virtually disappeared. There is now a Novolabun in the Ukraine. All the BERNSTEINS that immigrated prior to WWII I am aware of, are either descendants of Harris BERNSTEIN (London), or Louis BERNSTEIN (my grandfather) of (Chicago). Stewart K. Pre 1916 Marriage Records -- Chicago
#general
Stewart Bernstein <skbernst123@...>
I have recently been informed that Marriage record
recording was not required in Cook County until January 1, 1916. This information came >from the Cook County Records Office. I was informed when searching for the Marriage Record for my great-greatfather, Louis RUBIN, and his bride, Anne SHAPIRO, who were married in 1891 (second marriage for Louis). Does anyone have any ideas how I may find an alternate source for that record? I would imagine that the Shul they were married at probably had the record, but after 100 years, I doubt if that record is still around. Any help woulkd be appreciated. Stewart Bernstein Addl. RUBIN relatives >from Chicago: Bennie RUBIN, Samuel RUBIN, Rebecca RUBIN |

Re: The "legalese" in petitions, etc

Anna Reuter <anna94306@...>
Hi Joan:
You asked about the "legalese" for Naturalization Petitions for those over and under 21. This is an exception to the normal two step process to apply for Citizenship. Check the NARA website: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/genealogy/research_topics/naturalization_records.html "The second major exception to the general rule was that, >from 1824 to 1906, minor aliens who had lived in the United States 5 years before their 23rd birthday could file both their declarations and petitions at the same time. " I will post to the group since it is a general question. Regards, Anna Reuter Palo Alto, CA |

Allen Avner <AAvner@...>
The “Landsmen” Editor, Marlene Silverman, has asked me to remind our
members to send in their renewal for Vol. 15 (scheduled for publication around June 30.) Annual subscription rates remain the same: $24 in the U.S.; in Canada $25 [Surface] or $27 [Air]; all other countries $30 [Surface] or $37 [Air]. Mail to: Suwalk-Lomza Group, Box 228, 3701 Connecticut Ave., NW, Washington D.C 20008. We hope to minimize the number of renewal reminders that will have to be sent through the regular mail -- so please do not delay. Work in progress for Vol. 15 [Year 2005] includes the following: . The 1765 census for Lozdzieje, and extracts of civil birth and death records for this town >from 1826 - c. mid-1830's. Also, extracts of Jewish records found in Mormon microfilms for the nearby townlet of Swieto Jeziory (1808-1825). . Extracts of civil marriages for Grajewo, late 1870's. . Tombstone inscriptions at the Jeleniewo cemetery. . The 1784 census for Sejny and Berzniki; and newly extracted data >from the pre-1826 civil records for Sejny. . The 1784 census for Przerosl and Krasnopol (recently discovered at the Vilnius Archive, as were the 1784 censuses for Sejny and Berzniki). . More extracts >from governmental files for Suwalk Gubernia (mid - late 19th c.); and for Lomza Gubernia (late 19th - early 20th c.). Also, the Suwalk-Lomza Web Site (on JewishGen) is about to be updated and expanded. Update of “Landsmen” contents through Vol. 14 should appear around the end of this month. New features of the site should appear by the end of June, including: a photographic section, maps, and an E-mail address for Suwalk-Lomza SIG/ ”Landsmen.” |
