I am about to start reading. My uncle, born in Tetiev, lost a brother in a pogrom and could not talk about his experiences for decades. Marjorie Oludhe Macgoye's novel A Farm Called Kishinev imagines a Jewish refugee who escapes a pogrom and settles in what is now Kenya.

I would agree with Steve, a mistake was made. I found her death extract in the DB of Familysearch which is also referenced in ancestry.com. I copied/pasted it below. It says her death was on December 7th. 
Chencha or Chantchie is a common Yiddish Derivative of the names Chana or Henya. 
An observation: Being as the Gregorian Date of Death was December 7, unless the New York City Clerk erred in dates, but the stone says that she died on the 30th of the Jewish month,  then she died some time Friday evening between after sunset and midnight, which was on the Shabbos. The engraver was probably told she died on Shabbos so he engraved December 8. That Friday night of her death December 7, was the beginning of the 30th day of the Jewish Month of Kislev, which at the same time was the celebrated eve of the Sixth night of Chanukah and also the first celebratory Day of Rosh Chodesh Tevet (beginning of Tevet), of which the second day of Rosh Chodesh is the next day the first day of the month of Tevet. Both days have extra prayers. What should have been a happy evening for the family being Shabbos & Chanukah became a sad one. The deceased must have been a very special woman, being as she merited passing away on Shabbos. According to our tradition the Gates of Gehenom-hell are closed on Shabbos thus anyone who dies, their souls enter directly into Gan Eden. When that happens we generally wait until after the Shabbos ends Saturday night after dark to bury the deceased. Burials are not done on Shabbos. Being as Mrs Rosenbloom died Friday Night on the Shabbat, then her funeral and burial was not done until Sunday the 9th, as written in the death record. According to biblical tradition, Great Pious and Holy Jewish leaders like Joseph, Moses and King David all died on the Shabbos.

I am looking to retain someone to research birth, marriage and death records for members of my family that were killed in the Shoah.  They all lived in Eastern Slovakia.  Fluency in Slovakish/Hungarian is probably a must. 

On another, but related, topic, I am looking for a translation of "Šiesty prápor, na stráž! (by Emil Knieza, 1964)" (also known as Jankel Tannenbaum's Kompanie) and Kóšer rota ("The Kosher Battalion," 1966) by the same author. If anyone is aware of an English translation I would be most appreciative.

Obviously, either the civil or the Hebrew date is wrong.  December 8, 1923 = 30th of Kislev 5684.
I would say that the error is in the Hebrew month.  However, the only way to be sure is to reference some other document (death certificate, obituary, etc.)

When my Mom and I were making arrangements for my sister's stone (I was executor of her insolvent estate, and my Mom was bankrolling the stone from her own limited funds), the monuments guy initially suggested the inscription "Beloved Mother, Sister, & Daughter," but Mom adamantly insisted "Beloved Daughter, Sister, & Mother."

The main reason my sister's estate was insolvent was because her son had pilfered her bank accounts, maxxed out her credit cards, and fenced much of her chattels in order to support his substance abuse habit; he had even sold my sister's prescription pain medications.  My Mom had cut off her communications with the son, out of a (most highly justified) concern that he might pull similar shtick on her (the son at the time had been re-arrested for violating his parole, and was in the Big House).

That is why my sister's matsevah bears its subtly unconventional inscription.

What I know of the story from friends who attend there:

The building was abandoned in the early nineteenth century and that original congregation handed over the keys to Shearith Israel. Then a new congregation formed in the late nineteenth century and began holding services there  
under the dollar a year agreement cited. The maintenance, heating, etc were paid for by the new congregation Jeshuat Israel. All went well until maybe five or ten years ago JI needed serious money to put into the building and wanted to sell a set of rimonim made by Paul Revere or his workshop. That’s what the news article calls bells. SI said you can’t sell them, they’re ours. And it’s been lawsuits ever since.

People put what they want on tombstones. There are customs in particular places, but even they change over time. Customs, but rarely rules.

(Personally, I am fascinated by many Hungarian stones with the mother's name but not the father's name.)

While obituaries commonly list all surviving family members, tombstones generally do not.  The stone also refers to the deceased as “our brother” suggesting that the stone was commissioned by his siblings and not by his wife or daughter.  Why that is the case can only be surmised.

The Touro is the oldest synagogue building in the US, but it is not the oldest continuously operating congregation. Shearith Israel has been in operation since 1654. My guess would be Shearith Israel bought or inherited (both buildings are originally Sephardic) and preserved the Touro for the 200+/- odd years before the current residency.  These stories, while sad, usually have an economic basis. Leasing the building for $1 is noble, until inflation occurs. This brings Barbara Sloans statement into focus who pays for the "extensive repairs in the last decade or two", and how are those repairs performed under whose review? The owner, the tenants?

Bottom line, I don't know the whole story. I wish all parties well.
