Rabbinic Genealogy SIG #Rabbinic The Rabbi of Wolbrom's Daughter

I am trying to figure out an excerpt >from the Yizkor book about the
town of Wolbrom (near Krakow) in Poland in the section which discusses the town's rabbi, my ancestor, Rabbi Yaakov HaLevi Segal. This excerpt alludes to some sort of controversy over the rabbi's daughter Tovah and the identity of her husband, but does not spell out what's going on nor provide any citations for the controversy. Does anybody know where I can find out more information about this? The full page and the entire book can be accessed via the NY Public Library's digital collections at this page: https://digitalcollections.nypl.org/items/ae4699c0-28b3-0133-4114-58d385a7bbd0/book#page/176/ As far as I know, my gggg-grandfather Binyamin Eliezer UNGAR-AUERBACH married a daughter of Rabbi Yaakov Segal, but I don't know her name or anything else about him, except that his son was Rabbi Reuven Chaim KLEIN who served as a rabbi in Davidkoff (near Muncasz), Hungary. Thank you very much for your help. Reuven Chaim Klein Beitar Illit, Israel

Rabbinic Genealogy SIG #Rabbinic Connection between KANTOR family and Volozhin family
#rabbinic
Yonatan Ben-Ari
According to a scribbled note written by my great uncle his mother's
family was somehow descendant >from Reb. Chaim of Volozhin. His grandparents were Shlomo and Sarah Hinde KANTOR of Karlin (Pinsk). The descendancy seems to be through Sarah Hinde (maiden name unknown). There is a rumor that Reb Chaim's son Itzaleh was the "unterfirer" at Sarah Hinde's (or her mother's) wedding, as the bride was an orphan when she got married. According to published sources of the Volozhin family, Itzaleh did have a daughter and son-in-law LANDAU who both died during his lifetime but I can not find in published sources a mention of my ancestress. I've been told that many Rabbinical family trees (including the Volozhin/SOLOVEITCHIK family) do not include children who were not Rabbis or married to such. I did see another scribbled chart which mentions the name LANDAU which strengthens my feeling that we are connected to them. A prominent member of my above family was R' Chaim Dov KANTOR, who was the mashgiach of the Yekev (winery) in Zichron Yaacov near Haifa and Rav Kook's representative in that area. Unfortunately his descendants do not know of the presumed connection with the Volozhin family. If anyone knows of our connection with the Volozhin family I would be happy to hear about it. TIA Shavua tov and Shana Tova to all Yoni Ben-Ari, Jerusalem

Rabbinic Genealogy SIG #Rabbinic Help identifying portrait - Lowenstam
#rabbinic
Cory Streisinger
I'm trying to identify the subject of a portrait I've posted on ViewMate at
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM75192 The portrait comes >from an online genealogy site where the subject is identified as R. Aryeh Leib ben Saul Lowenstam (1690-1755), ABD Amsterdam. (He is my eighth-great-grandfather.) I'd like to confirm whether this identification is correct. Based on the inscription and the book in the portrait, it's also been suggested that this is actually R. Aryeh Leib's son R. Saul Lowenstam (1717-1790), also ABD Amsterdam. I've posted a closer view of the inscription at http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM75193 I would appreciate any views on whether this is R. Aryeh Leib, R. Saul, or someone else, as well as any further translation of the inscription (sorry about the poor quality), and if anyone knows the source of this portrait, please let me know. Thanks very much (and thanks to those who have weighed in already). Please respond via ViewMate or privately by email. Cory Streisinger Portland, Oregon

Yehuda Klausner z"l
Yehuda Klausner was a Civil Engineer with a doctorate from Princeton University. He was an erudite, modest and friendly man who studied rabbinical lineages with the same scientific approach, rigour and passion which characterized his academic career. We will miss his warm voice and accent, which had an indefinite touch of Eastern Europe.
Yehuda willingly responded to queries of people seeking answers to their genealogical questions.
Yehuda and his wife Yocheved were true partners in life and in genealogy. Together they volunteered for many JewishGen projects, where they especially contributed to RAV-SIG.
Yocheved, our thoughts are with you in these moments of sorrow.

Dear Genners and Siggers,
I had a chance to look at a partial list of graves in the Jewish Cemetery in Teheran and saw there an entry in Persian alphabet which reads like: Gelb Kroner Aldsa BRANSTIN. The way the entries are organized differs >from what we are used to in other communities and it may contain the deceased father's name as well. The surname is probably BERNSTEIN or BRAUNSTEIN. He died in 1945 and the remark on the entry is that he is German. I am not sure that he was German but probably spoke German. I wonder whether it rings a bell? Jacob Rosen, Jerusalem abuwasta@...
