SACHS & NIMAN families from Glasgow, Scotland #general

Daniel Gee <DanielGee@...>

Dear Genners,
Please could you check to see if "Flora SACHS" appears on your tree.
Flora married Max (Marks) NIMAN in 1920 in Glasgow, Scotland,
They had a daughter, Sheila, who died just after the war, at a young age.
Marks had siblings called Morris and Mary NIMAN, born in 1893 & 1897,
and so any children would now be in their 80s/90s.
I would like to re-establish contact with Carole SAMUELS & Jackie COLLINS,
the daughters of Flora's cousin Hymie Samuels; they'd now be about 60.
They are both in Southern England - one I think in the Thames Valley area.
Thank you for your help, in advance,
Daniel Gleek

Suggestion regarding author ChaeRan Freeze #ukraine

NFatouros@...

I urge all of you who have expressed interest in my
messages regarding ChaeRan Y Freeze's marvelous book on
Jewish Marriage and Divorce in Imperial Russia and on
obtaining the services of a Ukrainian researcher to
download >from the Internet and carefully read a "PDR"
article she wrote specifically for genealogists.

It will give you a good idea of her research findings
as to what is available in various archives.

To get to the article, type the following in quotes in
the "google" search engine

"(PDR) Freeze, ChaeRan Y. Jewish Marriage and Divorce
in Imperial Russia."

I am still adding to my folder names of those who
want me to pursue the matter of finding a reliable
researcher abroad willing to do family history work
for us at a group rate. In a couple of weeks, I will
write to the person Professor Freeze suggested who can
in turn refer me to contacts in the Ukraine.

I would also suggest that you keep an eye out for the idea that somewhere

I am looking for the BERCZENKO family >from Brailov, that is the family name

Re: Request information on town of Kovel, Ukraine #ukraine

Hi Neal,

Another source for some hints about Jewish life in your
ancestral town may be found in Kagan's Prenumerantn Lists.
Using his book, you can look up your town and find out
which books people there may have subscribed to. This will
lead you to some names of people in the town, and what
they were reading, which will tell you something about the
Jewish life there.

I recently used this resource myself, even though it's
written in Hebrew and Yiddish which I can only feebly
decode, and I was able to make use of it. I wrote up a
"how-to" guide for using Kagan's book, which is now
available as a JewishGen info-file:
http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/prenumerantn.htm

Also, don't forget to use the JewishGen FamilyFinder tool
to network with other people who are researching that
same town. Very useful!

Good luck in your search!

Re: Jewish Colonization Association -- WWII-era records #general

I remember many years ago looking through JCA files at the old headquarters
of the Center for the History of the Jewish People in Jerusalem. They had
not been sorted and consisted of letters in about six or seven different
languages. At any rate, that is probably the best place to turn to for
information.

Folks:

I have a communication on Jewish Colonization Association (Paris) letterhead
regarding the prospective emigration of my great-uncle and his family from
Poland to Argentina.

The date of the letter is 17 August 1939. This is the last trace we have of
these six people.

Did JCA continue after the start of the war, two weeks later? Were such
rescues immediately rendered completely hopeless? Were JCA records
preserved? Are they available for reference?

Thanks,

Henry Neugass

History: Klewan & Stobychwa #ukraine

Beyesn@...

Hello -

I am interested in learning the general history of the 1800-1940
Jewish communities of Klewan (Klevan) and Stobychwa in the Vohlynia
region of the current Ukraine.

If anyone knows this information, has access to a translated Yiskor
book on these towns, or can direct me to a source, I'd be very
appreciative.
